A very intereting article about Carey and how he has dominated the first week of the finals since 1994. The stats are:
1994: 32 Poss; 10 Mks; 4 Gls v Hawthorn
1995: 22 Poss; 9 Mks; 5 Gls v Richmond
1996: 23 Poss; 10 Mks; 3 Gls v Geelong
1997: 23 Poss; 10 Mks; 7 Gls v Geel (wet)
1998: 24 Poss; 8 Mks; 5 Gls v Ess (wet)
1999: 24 Poss; 11 Mks; 6 Gls v Port (wet)

1997 will always be my favorite, that was the year he came back from a broken collarbone.

Hope we can add 2000 to the list.

Impressive Stats there! Carey is definately a big-game player and the finals brings out his excellence. I wonder if Essendon will get a big head-start like earlier on this year and if there will be any mini brawls (Like Hardwick earlier on too)

The pessimist in me is rearing its ugly head again. Does anyone remember a game from not so long ago where the King kicked 10 goals....and we still lost?

It'll take more than just Carey to beat Essendon. Hope you're taking note Corey, Leigh, Winnie, Brent, and all those who play forward of the centre.

Hey Rooboy, how'd he go in 1993?

That would be the game he pulled his hammy, trying to play on three west coast backman.

I think that was his debut final, a big lesson, learnt well.

That was the year Carey torn Timmy apart in the Home and Away season, am I right?

Rooboy, yeah that was the year he killed us in the last quarter. From what I recall of the final, Jackovich (not three of them

)killed him and he tore the hammy late in the game

Yep

At CHF you had big Wayne. 22 or 23. Totally fit and healthy. In his prime. 10 cms taller and probably 10 kg heavier. Best CHF since Hart and Brereton - possibly ever

At CHB you had the artist formerly known as little Timmy Watson. Back out of premature retirement following massive injuries - age 32 or 33. Totally getting by on his brilliant football brain, guts and strength - pace completely gone. Best Ruck rover since??? Has anyone played that position any better??? 81-86 (knee) what a player....

Yep, for the time he was on him, in the absence of CHB in the side Watson did his best but got carved up playing out of position bigtime 5 years past his prime...

Funny thing though... a few months later good old Timmy was up on the dais at the G picking up his 3rd premiership medal outta 5 attempts
biggrin.gif
(though he won't remember much of the 1st attempt being concussed from a planned behind-play king hit from a member of the "family thug ...er club"

) - anyway not bad for an old codger... while Wayne, great player that he was/is, had to wait another 3 years for his first...

Funny ol game footy is it not?

Sorry Dutchie,
Dave should know better then to pick on Wayne, especially when it was not his team that had anything to do with what he is saying.

I exagerated slightly Carey had Jackovich wrestling him and (for the life of me a can't remeber his name, we will call him no-name, it may have been Bremmer or something like that) jumping over the top punching the ball away.

By the way Wayne was 21 when he became Captain at the start of 1993 so I doubt he was 23.

Who said I was picking on him?????? I was merely highlighting the fact that the article chose to totaly ignore one season where he *didn't* dominate the first round(co-incidently the year before the period they highlighted) . Sheesh, talk about touchy!

IF is no longer the Richmond fanzine that it was. It's match run-downs are one of the most comprehensive. Jim Main is still a prat.

The article on Carey - It was titled "Week one wonder'

Could it be "One week wonder" ?

What about in the 1998 grand final? One goal, and he didn't even have his hands on the ball then!! He had a chance to swing the momentum and keep North in the game, 15m out...missed. He was out marked numerous times by the young, inexperienced Mark Stevens.

and he was Robinson Caruso that day, Craven beat him that day, not Stevens.
Bluecrow, in future get your facts right.

Don't forget that week one usually falls on 2 Sept, which is GF day this year. Is he destined to Rock on GF day ?
