Well Topdon, considering we saw a GI wonder around lost on the beach then he picks up his arm off the floor .... also the GI lying on the beach screaming for his mum holding his stomach with all his intestines hanging out...you could say it wasnt cut!

One of the best movies i have ever seen and i think it solidfied the fact that Steven Speilberg is probably the greatest filmaker of all time. The first half an hour of that film is mindblowing and the best and probably most accurate depiction of war i have ever seen. Hanks is brilliant, as is Giovanni Ribisi and i liked Ted Dansons cameo. Hate watching that fight with the knife near the end as it slowly plunges into his chest....makes me shiver every time i watch it.

A masterpeice in every sense of the word and an absolute travesty that it was beaten by Shakespeare in Love for Best Picture at the Academy's.

Couldn't agree with you more.

I was in America when it was released and there were daily reports of old guys who had fought in the war, fainting and breaking down because it was the closest thing they had seen to the reality they had lived through. The American's were even talking about using the first 30 mins of the movie as an educational tool in their schools and playing it at war memorial sites - not sure if they did or not..

There's no shortage of travesties at the academy awards.

Considering you folks liked the honesty of the start of the SPR, which, given, I suppose was reasonably fair dinkum, I suggest giving Das Boot a viewing.

It is a great movie. The Thin Red Line is also really good if you liked SPR.

One thing is I can't understand how some people in here claim that it is realistic considering they obviously weren't there and have never been to war. A good friend of mine was in Vietnam and he says that when a bloke steps on a mine or gets hit by a shell they don't fly into the air (ala Hollywood - and Saving Private Ryan) but they are actually blown into little pieces. So I think SPR is quite realistic but probably not as gruesomely realistic as war actually is....

It really does make you realise what a ridiculous event a war is. And that message is still as relevent in today's world as it was in WW2. In fact, it would probably be worse now with the chem and bio weapons being used.
