This match up makes perfect sense for the biggest home and away fixture on the AFL calendar.

The biggest club being Collingwood.
The most successful club being Geelong.

Rotate the game between the MCG and Kardinia Park.

Collingwood vs Essendon has become too one sided.

Considering Geelong has just established its own traditional annual
Fixture against Hawthorn on a day that often falls in close proximity to Anzac Day, it’s not especially practical

Your suggestion falls apart (IMHO) if its played in Sleepy Hollow.

Not fool proof but try say, the two (2) highest Vic sides from the preceding year, so Collingwood v Richmond would be todays game.

I acknowledge it does nothing for the clubs chasing events to promote their bums on seats problems aka marque (marquee) games.

First of all, Carlton and Essendon are the most successful clubs.

Secondly, Essendon came up with the idea, why should anyone else be entitled to it?

What was the idea - to play on ANZAC Day ? Football had been played for years on ANZAC Day - total myth that Kevin Sheedy 'invented' ANZAC day football.

Success measured on last 10 years might be more relevant, certainly pre national comp would have Port top of the pops.

Geelong vs Hawthorn on Easter Monday has been just as one sided as ANZAC Day if not more one sided.

Essendon vs Hawthorn would be the ideal Easter Monday fixture with Collingwood vs Geelong on ANZAC Day.

It’s 3-2 geelong’s way over the last 5 years. And they’ve all been competitive games.

LOL backwater state league success that’s not the VFL matters little. Not relevant.

Geelong have won 7 of the last 9 Easter Monday games.
Collingwood have won 7 of the last 9 ANZAC Day games.

What about success in the VFA, is that relevant?

Only drew 66,000 this year, besides do you really like your club playing home games against Hawthorn at their home ground?

Honestly don’t care. It’s our blockbuster.
We’re happy with it and it won’t change

Thank **** this thread wasn't started by a Geelong supporter.

It's Essendon and Collingwood, because those sides have the ability to draw a crowd while both playing like shit. Geelong - much as I love 'em - can't do that.

I do question how much of the crowd figure is related to the fixture though... Give them shit timeslots, and the crowds fall away massively.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-set-to-scrap-sunday-night-games-20140630-zsqo2.html

The AFL is set to abandon Sunday night football following the disastrous attendance at the Collingwood-Carlton MCG night match which drew just 40,921 people.

“Sunday night matches have drawn strong viewer numbers on both the Fox Footy Channel and the Seven Network but crowd numbers have been strongly impacted, particularly in the games played in this timeslot in Melbourne in rounds one, three, 12 and last night," AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said in a statement released on Monday morning.
The Magpies-Blues clash was one of six Sunday night games (Eastern time) played this season as part of an AFL experiment to test timeslot ahead of future broadcasting rights negotiation deals. 1,019,315 people watched the game nationally on either Seven, its secondary channel 7mate or on Fox Footy. However the game was the lowest attended MCG encounter between the two traditional rivals since 1921.
Oh, and I hate Port, but their dominance in the SANFL deserves respect.

Especially after this booing display by the fans post game here.
Usually I'm all for booing but theres a time and a place.

Have said it before and I'll say it again....Essendon and their fans....the scummiest, least classy embarrassments of the league.

Disgusting club, I'd be so ashamed to support the rats.

Yes we have. We have also lost 2 of the past 5.

Why would you choose now, of all times, to change it? Especially when throughout that entire run, aside from one 15 goal blow-out, they’ve always been close games?
