The AFL is the VFL. Its the same competition.
There was some point in time where the leagues were relatively equivalent in terms of standard, but at some point in the 1960s where the best players in the land starting crossing to the VFL, the balance of power shifted.

This match up makes perfect sense for the biggest home and away fixture on the AFL calendar.

The biggest club being Collingwood.
The most successful club being Geelong.

Rotate the game between the MCG and Kardinia Park.

Collingwood vs Essendon has become too one sided.
Disagree.

Collingwood v Richmond makes more sense. Geelong haven’t been a successful club as such, if you want to argue that basis I would counter argue by putting forward the position that Hawthorn has been far more successful than Geelong, or any other club over the last 50 years.

Richmond have only got 92,000 once way back in 1977 on Anzac Day but guess who they had to play to draw that crowd.....Collingwood

Collingwood and Essendon are the biggest clubs in Australia. Richmond are no way near as big as Collingwood or Essendon. Richmond have to reply on Collingwood, Essendon or Carlton to draw a huge crowd during the home and away season
Collingwood have never drew over 90,000 to a non public holiday Richmond have, Collingwood can't get even 80,000 against an interstate club Richmond can, the absolute state of Collingminnows

Yeah....i'll pass on this idea.
Nothing wrong with what we have today--Collingwood v Essendon.
Long standing rivalry.
Traditional Victorian clubs.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

92,436 1977 Richmond versus Collingwood Anzac day game and Sheedy’s inspiration for the Anzac game we have now.

My first attended Richmond game btw.

Before advertising of the match.
And you had to play Collingwood to get over 90,000! The only time Richmond have ever drawn 90,000 to a home and away game

Another game I attended, was sitting 10 rows behind the core cheer squad in the upper deck when our cheer squad was the loudest and biggest in the land stretching from the front fence to the back of the southern stand,Punt Road End.
It was r3 1982,Richmond versus Essendon,90,564 attended and Richmond were behind by a few all day until the last quarter when we blew the Bombers away, one of my favourite games ever.

Maurice Rioli was my hero then, doing stuff then that players do now and Flea was magnificent.

If you look back in history of the VFL ,it was only when Richmond played in finals, that attendances started to get bigger.

Who's asking?
AFL Club
Geelong
So has someone managed to work out how Geelong is the most successful club yet? Im pretty sure my own club tops the Cats in just about every conceivable measure.
I don’t agree with the OP, but in response to your post:

Premierships - Cats 9 v WCE 4
Brownlow medalists - Cats ahead
Home & Away record - Cats ahead
Coleman medalists- Cats ahead
Norm Smith - equal
Proximity to Melbourne- Geelong wins

Richmond have never drawn over 90,000 to a non holiday game during the home and away season
yet Richmond drew over 90,000 last year round 1, the only game Collingwood supporters with their social media likes go to is ANZAC day they save their centrelink payments up for them

And lol how sad you have to look at a game 17 years ago and even then couldn't get over 90,000 how sad
