How the hell does Sandy Roberts get a gig commentating ANY sport, let alone the Aus Open tennis. He knows NOTHING about the game and he's been commentating for years. In fact, he knows nothing about any sport he commentates. You would think he'd take the time to learn at the very least a little bit about the sports he's commentating.

All he does is attempt (and the key word here is attempt) to recite stats about players and boring little anecdotes - yet the main problem is that he does it at the most inappropriate times. Half the time you can tell how annoyed his co-commentators are with his ineptitude. **** him off and get somebody in who actually knows what they're talking about.

He's also shit on the news. You can tell Peter Mitchell dies a little inside every time he has to endure one of Sandy's lame arse jokes as he finishes the sports segment.

He has given me the shits for years.

Probably from about the time of the infamous 'Leanne C ock' incident when, quite frankly, he should have been sacked and Seven could duly have spared us all of years of pain in the process.

Not that I would recommend this, but a few times in the past I have actually sat through a game of sport focusing purely on his 'contribution' to the coverage - and what he has said.

All it is, EVERY SINGLE TIME, is a stream of inanities that, literally, a trained monkey or parrot would be perfectly capable of reciting.

Just a stream of verbage that requires no expert knowledge or understanding.

And is often topped off - after a goal in football, after a putt goes in at the golf, or a game is completed in the tennis etc. - with a turn of phrase like "<insert player or team name> says catch me if you can!" or "<insert player or team name> is coming home with a wet sail!". Or similar variations.

He is just hopeless.

Yup, Sandy Roberts is probably my most hated commentator of all time, in any sport, aside from when Fast Eddie decides to pick up the microphone.

At least McAvaney, boring though he is, does a ton of research and focuses on asking the expert commentators questions about THEIR expertise. Sandy thinks we're all there to listen to his brainless twaddle.

Why do C7 persist in hiring commentators with no sporting background whatsoever? At least Nine try and make sure their presenters are experts in some field, if not the event being covered.

I can't stand Bruce cmmentating football, but I must say that he is actually quite good with the tennis. He knows his role and works well with the expert commentators. You can tell he actually does his homework too.

Bruce has been good, doesn't have the insight of Courier but that's not his role.

He needs to become an "honorary" Australian, like Clijsters or Baghdatis, to get more love from Ch 7.

I don't mind Bruce in general, but him being in the box just seem entirely superfluous. You don't need play by play callers in tennis. There is no play by play. This was especially clear when Courier and Hewitt were commentating with Bruce. Bruce added nothing to the discussion because he clearly doesn't know anything about tennis compared to those two.

Get Bruce in as host, so we can kick out hacks like Griggs. Then just have two analysts. Would make it a million times better.

Sandy pulls out the "it will be unchartered waters for her trying to go into the fourth round of a grand slam" with the graphic on the screen saying she made the semi final at Wimbledon.

Then Griggs talking about the Isner and Cilic match says it won't worry Isner as he played the longest match ever at wimbledon, then went on to say he would be having nightmares about it.

BTW I can't stand McLachlin on tv but I didn't mind him commentating the footy on the radio with Triple M.

And the reason he is so much better is because he hasn't got D Commetti next to him. Isn't trying to be childish with stupid -isms etc.

he's only got a job with 7 during the afl season, because of his brother. but with the tennis. 7 are showing their true colours. with ever exposing untalented people on their network

I like and admire McAvaney - he really does his research - but whoever said that he's a PBP commentator in a sport that doesn't need one hit the nail on the head.

All that's left for him to do is ask the expert commentator fairly inane questions, and come up with increasingly-obscure statistics. He doesn't piss me off like Sandy does but I really feel like it's a wasted commentary spot that could be filled with another expert who can provide real insight.

bruce is a billion times better without dennis. dennis and 7 have an agreement by the looks of it. the agreement is, dennis has to have a thousand 1 liners a match during the afl season

Seriously, what is the point of blocking the post match pressers to Australian viewers on the internet if you're going to just switch off the interview channel at night? If there was a time of day tennis fans would want to sit through a 30min loop of interviews it would be at night when there's no matches on.
