Not sure why you'd get riled up over that. In this instance, Roddick's 2nd serve was about to be tested again, as Bruce mentioned...what's wrong with that?
Because it's completely brainless. He's just telling us exactly what we're watching. I half expected him to come back after the point with "and now Roddick is straightening his socks and wiping his face with the towel. Now he takes three balls from the ball boy and chooses the two he's going to serve with." etc. etc.

They're not meant to give the deep insights into the game incase you didn't know (which it seems an awful lot of people don't)
I know that's not their job, my point is that their job is completely unnecessary and just clogs up the airtime to little benefit. Good television commentary enhances what you're watching, not describes it in mind-numbing detail.

You need play-by-play callers at the football when sometimes its hard to differentiate between the players without looking carefully and knowing all their names, but it's completely superfluous at the tennis where the action is self-explanatory. It reduces guys like Sandy and Bruce to repeating the score and constantly coming out with valueless nothings like "he'll be pleased to get the break" or "she's about to serve for the set".

I would literally rather listen to nothing - just the sounds of the court and the players - than their endless worthless bleatings. The only value they add is their statistics (and Bruce leaves Sandy for dead in that department) but it's nothing that a researcher couldn't do behind the scenes and then just hand to one of the experts to read out.

I don't know why Seven persists in giving front-seat billing to non-expert commentators at all their events. None of the other channels really do it unless its something like the Olympics (where it's impossible to have sufficient experts in every category).

Overall, a slight improvement on last years coverage.

At least they got rid of Kia hotshots. :p

I missed Kia hotshots....
I agree. Since C7 has the attention span of a five year old when it comes to covering matches, and basically ignores any match without a big-name player, Hotshots was a great way to catch some of the best rallies of the tournament.

Definitely think the tournament was the poorer without it.

Thats strange..

Last year people were bagging C7 for showing it 4 times an hour. And now people miss it??

They'd definitely have to consider revamping the coverage after a result like that.

I've only really been following this Open the last couple of nights and I was shocked to see how much of the match that they missed, either through ads or replays. Was a joke.

If you thought last night's final was terrible, check out the ratings:

2005 - 4.04m
2006 - 2.75m
2007 - 2.44m
2008 - 2.45m
2009 - 2.25m
2010 - 2.35m
2011 - 1.36m

Even the women's final (1.68m) beat it comfortably. Wow.

I really can't work out that figure, nobody likes Djokovic or Murray

It's probably averaged out across the whole match with a lot of people losing interest and turning off or over fairly early. That and I'm sure someone like Federer or the underdogs from previous years would naturally be better for ratings.

edit - but seriously I reckon people from states outside of Nsw, Vic and Tas were fed up with delayed telecast, and voted with their feet/ remote controls

Just heard on 7 they'll be broadcasting Wimby this year. This is very promising IMO considering they were willing to use their extra stations properly during AO. Hopefully we won't have to put up with crap like unimportant cricket matches instead of history making matches and what ever other disgraceful stuff 9 did last year.

Great for tennis that there is still FTA coverage, well done for seven for picking it up, didn't see this coming to be honest.

Their coverage won't be as bad as AO, it mainly won't be in primetime so the focus won't be on advertising their shows and more so on the tennis. Anything will better than the crap Nine showed up last year...

From The Age:
Channel Seven has bought the multi-year broadcast rights to Wimbledon surrendered by the Nine Network last year after a four-decade association, adding the grasscourt major to a tennis menu that includes the Australian Open and Davis Cup. From this year, Seven will have the choice of the ''best two matches'' each day until the quarter-finals and exclusive coverage of the singles semis and finals and both doubles deciders. Pending government approval, there are also plans for live daily telecasts on one of Seven's two digital channels.

With AGENCIES

So the best two matches of the day sounds like a bit of a crock, but its better than nothing like we would've got otherwise. Hopefully they get this government approval, it is a joke that they should have to ask anyway.

As far as the deal goes, it's exactly the same as the deal Nine had, they had selection of two best matches of the day, they would always choose Hewitt and Federer. Seven has that as well, and along with coverage on the multichannels from an earlier time then this is a win. Fox Sports contiunes their normal coverage
