Bruce is good as a host, as a commentator he doesn't really add much but if Courier and Hewitt are in there then it doesn't matter really. To even compare him with rompingwins is laughable.

The host role in the commentary box is simply not needed.

Courier or the other commentator could easily do what Bruce does, which is provide stats, tell the viewers that they're going to a commercial break and then welcome them back.

Bruce is more suited to Johanna Grigg's role in the studio.

Agree but as long as the host role in the commentary box doesn't waffle on it doesn't bother me too much, I don't think bruce is that bad. Certainly would be more suited to Griggs' role.

I think the 'host' role in the commentary box is sort of a legacy from other sports. In a lot of sports (like footy) you need a play-by-play commentator because a lot of people watching can't keep up with the action. The action is complex, viewers get players mixed up, umpires make decisions that need to be explained. Basically, even before you get to analysis people need more information about what is going on.

A good PBP commentator is a good PBP commentator. As long as you can identify the players and you know the rules, you can do the job without much other knowledge of the sport. However what Seven doesn't seem to get is that the role is completely superfluous in tennis. Think about it - how often does the viewer actually need the action explained to them? The ball is either in, out, or into the net. The scoring is short, simple and on the screen. Umpire intervention is exceedingly rare.

So you get Sandy Roberts and Bruce McAvaney reduced to constantly reeling off stats, repeating the score at every opportunity, asking vacuous questions, saying exactly what we've just seen, and generally talking for the sake of talking. Because they have to justify being there talking about a sport they can add absolutely no value to.

You'll find that Matt(hew) White will probably do night sessions now that he's quit Today Tonight.

I hope so he does a good job hosting the V8 Supercars but no so good as a commentator.

It sounds as though Giaan Rooney now employed at Seven is going to be involved in the coverage. I can't imagine she will commentate so she may be a reporter or even replace Griggs.

I would say it's quite possible. Good to know we'll find out how good Federer is at swimming.

why are they showing the Brisbane international and i assume sydney on 7two. the programming on seven currently looks pretty crap so why not just put it on the main channel and use 7two if needed?

I don't think sport counts towards locally-produced content quotas. They also have a specified level of children's/educational content that they have to show on the main channel.

Their primetime programming might rate better than the tennis also.

do you think they have to play the tournaments as part of the package to have ao coverage or is it still profitable in some respects?

I have no idea. I'd have thought that the day sessions of the tennis would rate better than most daytime TV, but I have no idea what they pay for the rights.

This. Their primetime lineup does better than showing live sessions of the tennis so this way we get the best of both worlds. Also, it has allowed them show uninterrupted coverage by going to the end of play instead of just cutting at 5pm.

TA sell their rights as a package with the AO with the warmup tournaments ad Davis Cup ties. And I would imagine that there would be deals as well with them being the host broadcaster with the ATP and WTA to broadcast it around the world. Same goes with the advertising they sell, it would be sold as a package with the summer of tennis. If they are running their business right they should be making money out of it.

Also in regards to tv coverage, I assume the lead up tournaments have been banished to the multi channel as it doesn't rate well enough?

They must use the same producer as the footy as the ridiculous camera angles have been incorporated into the tennis coverage. The one from the back corner of the court is woeful, worse than the single fixed camera you might get on a stream from some scrubber indoor challenger in finland.
