If I was to receive an email from an unknown person using aol, is their anyway i can investigate the name before opening the email? Do people use aol like gmail or msn to send dodgy spam emails?

Any help would be appreciated.

according to messengers link, it would appear the sender gets his connection from aol and is using email address provided with that service.

Well, I went to the library and opened it. "hey handsome, I saw you on some dating site last week, here's my number, text me and I'll send you some of my hot picz" the number was an american mobile number.

Thing was i wasn't on a dating site and it was a man.

Report to the police. Vicpol site will have a section you can do that. Some idiot will open it, another will fall for it. Its because people don't report this shit as to why it is so previliant.

I marked it as a 'phishing scam' which is an option in my email - I assumed that means that the email provider is made aware of it to stop sending more of them out?

They are, but police FB pages advertise on a regular occurrence to report scams like yours, where they are trying to fool you out of your bank details.
