Bold of you to assume they're all temporary. Graduating from an Australian university gets you a big advantage when applying for permanent residency.

That is absolutely true, but they are, by definition, temporary visas.

Ask yourself why the median age is relevant. Do people suddenly stop watching AFL when they retire? A growing population is a growing population regardless of their average age, so I don't know why you're making sweeping statements about the demographics not favouring a team. I believe age was only brought into the discussion in terms of whether there are enough young people hanging around Hobart to make it an attractive place for other young people, so Tasmania's median age is irrelevant, only Hobart's median age is relevant, and that's 39.6. Still higher than the median, but far closer, meaning there are still plenty of young people, and as has been proven, there was a positive net migration of young people before the pandemic.

It's primarily an indication of future population growth. The younger a person the longer they're likely to live and the more likely they are to have kids themselves. It would be a major reason why most projections have Tassie's population growing relatively slowly over the longer term.

I'm certainly not arguing against a Tassie team - don't think i'm your enemy here. But i'm making statements saying that demographics is not a Tassie bid's strong point - because it's true.

whose talking about replication? They could easily make their own. Football has been around here for a century or so im told. Someone must know how to play the game here.

So why would they when the AFL is charged with the development of the code?

They get all sorts of tax breaks for just that.

Literally nothing stopping the tasmanian government from running their own development program separate to the AFL.

Hard to convince Tasmanians that public money would be worth investing into a program where the success is defined by the players leaving Tasmania.

But growing nonetheless. By the way, 2/3 of the young people immigrating to Tasmania from overseas are not coming through student visas. Plenty of them are skilled professionals or on humanitarian visas.

Apologies if I came across as hostile, but there are important components to demographics that should also be considered. First and foremost, 500 000 people is a significant market, secondly it's no longer declining in population and is actually growing faster than a couple of other states. Plenty has to go right economically for Tasmania in the future, but the demographics are not a weak point here, in fact it's the biggest untapped market left where Australian rules is the #1 sport, by a factor of 5.

It also says most of those young people are foreign students - temporary arrivals that in reality have no impact on the viability of a Tasmanian AFL team.

The reality is that Tassie has the highest median age in the country, and over the last 20 years it's blown out from 36 to 42. The national median age is currently 37. I wouldn't use a demographic argument if you're trying to justify a Tassie team.
So older people are not allowed to follow football ?

They can't, really. Yet another reason why we need a governing body for the sport that is separate from the largest league in the country.
Absolutely, yes.

I've been arguing this for a long time now.

Australia as a whole is aging. Tasmania is ahead of the curve.

It'll be interesting to see how future demographic projections change due to the effects of Covid 19.

Also the flow of interstate migration, due to that & projected climate changes.

Then its tough to do it without the AFL then isnt it. A National body couldnt force you entry to the AFL either. Its why we have this mess in the first place.

They get all sorts of tax breaks for just that.

If they believe the AFl isnt doing development properly in its own state then they can either let it rot themselves - as they were content to prior to the AFL taking over in 2011 because the damn game was broke down here - or they can revive it themselves. The AFL doesnt own the fields of tasmania, nor does it have exclusive rights to teaching kids to play footy.

If the AFL doesn’t want to place a team in Tasmania come out and just say so.

if the AFL does want to place a team down in Tasmania just say so and make a commitment everyone can move on
All they really need to do is promise a team by 2030 or something along those lines. No one's asking for a team next year.

The reason why they are hiding behind COVID and a longer review time frame is they want to say no but they know now if they do Gutwein/Tasmania will be putting all their money into Aleague and NBL. Every month a new footy club in Tasmania is dying. State wide league has turned to s**t.

Tasmania as an AFL side will be a huge incentive for players to move here. Price of living is insanely good. For the average AFL income player will own 3-4 houses by the time they’re strong enough to hold down regular midfield minutes.

Public health would you ra
rather have young people playing sport or doing nothing
plenty of other sports and exercises people can do instead. afl is very specialised and only serves a very small % of the population. your average person cant just start playing footy for a bit of fitness. plenty of significantly better ways to achieve that and to actually cater to a wide variety of people. building public gyms or tennis/basketball courts for example.

If they dont want to, then they can shut up about what a private body does with its private money.
well then the afl and its clubs can shut up about shrinking participation and afl players from tassie, shrinking revenue from tassie, and the tassie gov not being willing to keep hawthorn and north melbourne afloat.

The Aging population thing seems one of many ridiculous excuses the anti Tassie crowd throw out there.

The Crows have big crowds and 80% of their supporters are over 60.

The AFL isn't BHP FFS.

Its a 'not for profit' organisation which has a tax free status.

Its not run on 'private' money like Murdoch press or KFC..

it has obligations.

It Touts its community credentials.

Too much talk the talk from Gil. Lets now see some 'walk the walk' for a change.

I havent seen the AFL itself whinging about the shrinking participation or afl players or shrinking revenue from Tassie. IVe seen plenty of others whine about it though.

Its also a business that exists to generate cash for its clubs, its the whole reason the commission was created in the first place. And yes, its run on private money.

Its obligations do not extend to putting teams in places it doesnt want to.

Cost of living is a bit of a moot point.

Some items of food etc etc are dearer. Petrol is a rip off, but most people drive less here than Bigger cities. Less time commuting means more time for other activities.

Housing prices have skyrocketed over the last 20 years in a number of boom periods. I know a house in North Hobart was 180k in 2003. Its worth about $700k+ now. Plenty over $1mil.Outer areas haven't increased as much but are starting to catch up. The current lack of housing stock is making life hard for a lot of people. Still the prices are a fair bit less than Syd/Mel.
