Training Report No.1 2016-17: Monday Nov 28
A pleasant, cool & cloudy morning for training today. Had our usual brekkie in the café and spied Chris Tarrant who appeared to be dressed for the office. Is Chris a new employee?

Levi Greenwood and Tay Adams
were first on the track at 9am and that trend continued throughout the session; both players worked super impressively in every drill and Greenwood in particular, the most impressive trainer on the track.

There are a few notable differences at training this year. The first we noticed was the music being pumped across the oval. It continued for the entire two hour session. The players seemed to like it and were in high spirits. The second was instructions on the large screen on the Glasshouse wall. Each drill was named in advance and a timer countdown operated for each.

No shows: Brodie Grundy

Didn’t participate in training drills:
Adam Oxley, Braydon Sier, Ben Reid, Ben Crocker and James Aish had individual schedules. All ran laps. Aish was only on the track for a short time.
Crocker had two trainers supervising his speed and agility work.
Braydon Sier says he’ll be back into full training before Christmas all going well.

Some Early Observations:

Jackson Ramsay impressed throughout the session and for the first time I can remember, wore no shoulder bandages.

Ben Crocker
arrived early and stopped to kiss and hug one of the perennial track watchers; it’s her birthday. She comments on his new tattoos. Both his lower legs are prominently inked.

New draftees Sam McClarty, Callum Brown, Josh Daicos and Kayle Kirby were present and were itching to get into the action. Their chaperone for the morning was Brent Macaffer.

Ben Reid has a bandage on his left knee. It looks like a medical type bandage. Did Ben have any surgery? He ran laps for over two hours. At times he really pushed the pedal and was reaching ¾ pace.

Kayle Kirby looks very laid back and comfortable. He didn’t look the slightest bit over-awed. He wore the Collingwood shorts and t-shirt with thongs. He was also sporting multi-coloured cotton ankle bands. He’s a big bodied boy. He’s carrying a bit of a paunch and will need a big summer.

Matt Sharenberg: Free of bandages and looks to have done a lot of leg strengthening work. Will need to develop his conditioning over the pre-season.

Jordan de Goey: Looks to have spent the summer in the gym. He is noticeably bigger across the shoulders and in the upper arms. He also sports a tatt on his right calf.

Jamie Elliott was early onto the track and set about doing balance work, first on a plastic ball and next on a spring-mounted wooden step. He surprised by joining many of the early drills. It was great to see him snapping goals again.

Tim Broomhead ran laps after doing a few early drills.

The Drills

• Warm up consisted of a stretching session and then straight into a running /ball drill. A trainer kicked a ball toward a running player who needed to gather and handball back to trainer.

• 8 minute drill with players in two groups doing handball drills in close.

•10 minute drill: 12 Vs 8+4 Is a type of simulated match play. One player was a ball magnet in this drill and I couldn’t pick him. Thought it might have been Tom Phillips but it wasn’t. Bucks liked what he saw in this guy too, calling him over for a pat on the back. It was Will Hoskin-Elliott. First time I’ve seen this boy and he was very impressive throughout the morning.

•Following a 3 minute drinks break, the players moved to an 8 minute Core Development Session. Two groups working at different positions. One group near the centre have to retrieve a bouncing ball and deliver to a teammate whilst being bumped by 2 trainers wearing padding.

The other group went to the Olympic Boulevard end and did goal kicking work. This will gladden the hearts of all supporters. I can’t remember seeing such specific goal kicking drills before so early in a session. Usually the players play around kicking goals at the end of training, but this was a carefully planned and executed drill.

Drill No.1 – coach rolls ball to player running away from goal. Player must retrieve and snap over shoulder.

Drill No.2 – players are 25 metres out from goal and kick over player on mark.

Drill No.3 – players taken deep into forward pocket. Ball rolled in front of them. Player retrieves ball and snaps toward goal.

Drill No.4 – players at 50 metre arc. Each player takes handball from trainer and shoots at pace.

The next drill is an 8 minute Possession Grid. Two teams play handball drill keepings off. Elliott leaves the group and now does running drills. Every time I look back to the Possession Grid I see Will Hoskin-Elliott with the ball. Not only does he get it, but he uses it so well.

Now another goal shooting drill involving all players, takes place at the Yarra end. This is obviously a new training emphasis and it’s great to see.

Daniel Wells, who has trained impressively, now leaves the main group and does laps.

Players have a drinks break and we thought the session was over. If the players thought this, they were in for a rude shock. After 90 minutes, Bill Davoran instructs the players to run laps of the oval. They sprint, jog, sprint and jog. Let’s see how they cope here.

Greenwood, Adams, Smith and Sidebottom finish in that order after first lap.

By the third lap we see Greenwood lead each sprint from Smith, Phillips, Sidey, Hoskin-Elliott.

Fourth sprint: Greenwood, Smith, Howe, Phillips, Treloar, Sidebottom, Crisp, Hoskin-Elliott, Ramsay, Pendles, Varcoe.

Now a two minute break.

Next the players are broken into three running groups; 2 fast groups and a slower group.

Group 1: Sidey, Varcoe, Faz, Adams, Maynard, Blair, Greenwood, Ramsay, Phillips.

Group 2: Smith, Crisp, Howe, Pendlebury, Hoskin-Elliott, Treloar

Group 3 (the slower runners) Jesse White, Cox, Sinclair, Sharenberg, Dunne and Main) run 100 metre sprints.

Mason Cox led every sprint in Group 3 with Sharenberg last in each.

In Group 2, honours were shared between Smith and Crisp.

In Group 1, Levi Greenwood led every sprint and took on all challengers.

Overall the order was: Greenwood, Ramsay, Phillips, Sidebottom, Adams, Maynard, Varcoe, Faz, Blair.

As I said at the beginning, Levi Greenwood trained the house down. Not only did he lead in every distance race, he led every sprint. What a great effort. Taylor Adams was also really impressive as were new boy Will Hoskin-Elliott, Darcy Moore, Treloar, Faz and Ramsay.

The next training session is on Wednesday.

BIG thanks for all this info.

I think David Cloke had it in Trav's contract that goal kicking drills weren't allowed in case it sapped his confidence, especially from close range.

What a great write up! Thanks for the insights.

With Greenwood and WHE looking so good and assuming that Elliott and Scharenberg are eased into the season, I have our Rd1 team presently as:

BACKS
Ramsay Dunn Maynard
Howe White Reid

(All are good long kicks, with plenty of marking power and a bit of dash)

MIDS
Grundy Adams Treloar
Wells Pendles Crisp

(Skillful, tough, ball-magnets. No other club has a better starting midfield)

FORWARDS
Fasolo Moore Hoskin-Elliott
Mayne Cox Sidebottom

(Good mix of marking power, mobility and goal-smarts)

INTERCHANGE
Greenwood Varcoe Aish DeGoey
(great versatility)

DEPTH/REHAB
Smith Elliott Scharenberg Sinclair Langdon Blair Goldsack Broomhead Oxley Phillips Crocker Keeffe Sier + draftees & rookies

What a terrific, talented squad! I don't think we will miss the departed players at all. Don't make holiday plans for next September!

Hey Lethal06 surely Elliot is top 22 this year. He's in drills already! And Jesse White stormed home in his forward role this year - can't be anything but first picked until someone really beats down the door.

If Keeffe was fit/firing then he would slot in, but maybe it's Sinclair or Oxley who both made enough claims on their positions. We do indeed have a lot of talent as depth, will make the competition for spots pretty tight this year. And our VFL team is going to be red hot :D

Yes, you're right Sherriff, Elliott definitely an auto-pick if fully-fit. My guess is that the Club will be super-cautious with bringing him back. So much competition for spots (at least until the injuries hit). I reckon this is the most skillful Collingwood squad I've seen in my 35 years actively supporting them. So much upside and nearly all the ball-butchers are gone. So many new players to watch next year. Exciting times to be a Pies supporter!
