This was Buckley's answer to a fan question on facebook a couple of days back. Seems Keeffe is being trained to plug holes. I get that, but the Port Adelaide final was a disaster and barring a sudden improvement I can't help think it's a mistake.

Brenton James You've been trialling Lachie Keeffe up both ends this off season. Where do you see him lining up for Round 1?

AFL Thanks Brenton, we know Keeffey can play down back if required but our depth charts indicate he may be a better chance of playing senior footy as a Fwd/2nd Ruck. He has trained really well and will be ready when called upon. Came back very fit.

Given our lack of experienced and proven tall, key defenders this season, I would have thought Keeffe would be given every opportunity to re-establish himself back there.
Buckley also addressed a question on our defence during the facebook Q&A replying the trend is for mobile attacking defenders and group defence. Keeffe doesn't provide much run and isn't overly quick, but he's mobile for a bloke his size and can be a nice kick. With the AFL trialling keeping 2 and also 3 players in each 50 at St Kilda's recent scratch match I hope we don't get caught out with another rule change.

While Keeffe training as a fwd/ruck potentially offers versatility with a new defence I'm glad to hear he's also doing work down back, because he plays his best footy there.

Jack Bradshaw How will the backline cope after losing a lot of key figures last year , Nathan brown, Jack Frost, jono marsh and Alan Toovey , they were all excellent players so who's gonna cover them bucks? And does this change the way the backline will be run from now on?

AFL Its been a big headline hasnt it? We are confident we have the makings of a top line modern defence. The game is asking for more mobile, attacking defenders that defend as one and we are looking to do that more regularly.

Keefe forward or back. Same with Howe and Reid. Multi dimensional mismatchs i think it awesome that the list has this many player's that adapt quickly in game situation. Went to a game in 2012 in brisbane, Buckley threw keefe forward and absolutely dominated. The week after he did his knee. The training reports of short people outmarking whipping boys makes me chukkle every time. BTW. Just for giggles Blair promoted to the leadership group.

Having had a look at some of Hoskin-Elliot's GWS footage during the week he looks like a promising player. Anyone get a look at him during training?

9 disposals, 4 marks and a goal. Well I'm convinced. With those kind of performances we've got the next Buddy on our hands.

He was a standout yesterday. When I attend training, I tried to focus on a few players and Sinclair was one I wanted to watch yesterday. The others were Broomhead and DeGoey. Sinclair was in everything. Great pace yesterday and used the ball pretty well. He has improved his disposal markedly. He could not be ignored yesterday in the match play. He then finished it off in the sprints. Fingers crossed he gets an injury free year.

Sinclair's disposal has never been as bad as people suggest. He just missed a couple of shots on goal and got labelled. Generally up around 80% in his DE.

The Port Adelaide game came out of left field though. Keeffe had been working solely with the defense. Surely allowing him to train with the forwards in case that is where he is needed at some stage gives the kid some chance of an improved performance at his 2nd attempt. I just don't get all the angst over it from a few posters.

Sinclairs disposal is poor IMO. Training performances count for little when the real stuff starts.

I have seen him hit opposition forwards lace out too many times to have any other opinion. DE is another misleading stat. Sideways chip kicks shouldn't count and neither should 50 metre kicks to a contest.

Happy to be proven wrong.

That was in a quarter the other 3 quarters he was off getting stitches in his back from knives being thrown from the grandstands.
Gave you a like for making me laugh :D

Just point me to the player without guilt in this regard... and just what is wrong with sideways chip kicks or 50 metre roosts to a contest if that is all that is on offer, you'd prefer he just stop and wait for something better?

Thanks a lot for this report and all the others you've posted. Looking forward to the next one!

. So basically we are aware that our talk forward depth is crap and addressing it by having keeffe help out there. To me it's the wrong approach, these things are sorted in recruting/drafting, if our list is what it is there is not point trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and we're better off capitalising on best position per player.

Let's applaud Buckley for trying Keefe out up forward. We wont die wondering what if.

Just to ask you some questions on the above. Do you recall what kind of transition the exercise was about? Offence to defence or defence to offence or both?

Did any type of player system or tactics stand out? I.e. Loose zoning in defence if the opposition is in its defensive 50? Or when transitioning to offence were we kicking sideways a lot / using a lot of handball chains / short or long kicks over the opposition forwards / slow or fast / lot of mids coming back to help or more spreading?

Totally agree especially after our KPD dramas over the whole season I would have hoped we'd give him every chance to vouch for a tall defender spot in the line up next to Reid.
If you read Bucks' recent AFL Facebook page q&a answers you can see he addresses Keeffe and mentions the 'depth charts' the club uses. So basically we are aware that our talk forward depth is crap and addressing it by having keeffe help out there. I agree. And its not as if our backline is rock solid anyway. Id be playing keeffe where he is best suited. If Buckley believes that is as a forward then so be it, but based on recent comments i get the impression its more about needing forward line depth.

For me, if it gets desperate up forward, we have guys like Reid and Howe who have proven over their careers they are competent forwards. We also have Cox in reserve.

For now, id be playing Keeffe as a defender. Just my opinion.

Nothing wrong with them but they distort DE percentages.

If you believe Sinclair is a good user of the footy I won't tell you the truth about santa.

Thank you for that information.

Really interesting insight into where we're at tactically that we're only now starting to adjust to the way the games going defensively after years of Toovey, Frost and Brown playing shutdown roles in the back half.

The loss of Reid hurt, but we didn't put enough time into finding more rounded defensive options, IMO, and trading out the most dynamic half back in the game didn't help...

Loved the direction you were trying to go Vankri with those questions, but I don't think we're likely to get that sort of information!

Sinclair is so under rated. If doesn't get knocked out or get injured he will kill it.

The criticisms of his skills are really boring. In game he's as reliable as anyone and he runs good lines unlike supposedly better kicks in Oxley and Langdon who love the sideways option to pad their numbers!

You are back to a better avatar than the all white (shades of Real Madrid strip)
Good work
