The most coveted footballer in the AFL's new women's league, Daisy Pearce, has threatened to retire if she can't play for her beloved Melbourne Football Club.

As the AFL instructed eight handpicked foundation clubs on Wednesday that further signings are strictly forbidden while it selects marquee players and sets their destinations in the national competition, Pearce dictated her own non-negotiable terms.

One thing to consider is that figure of $25000 for the marquee players. I am not anticipating the AFL having any problems with deals that would be considered rorting in the mens game. For instance, I am pretty sure that Daisy Pearce, Tayla Harris, Meg Hutchings and Lauryn Arnell are already getting considerably more than $25 K from the clubs they are going to end up playing for. So this $25k (from the AFL) will be on top of what they are getting from the club for whatever job title the club gets them. I suspect Daisy, Tayla etc, also get something from the AFL for promo work, and things like the draft camps

I would expect this would eventually apply to all 16 marquee players. So we may hear about how once again female sportspeople are being paid part time wages, but at least these 16 may in fact be well paid when it is all taken into account.

Daisy's a full-time employee of the MFC already; I'd say she's on significantly more than $25k.

5min mark. Clubs can submit 5 marquee nominations as a 'wishlist' of which they will receive two players.

List structure:

2 marquee players.
20 drafted players.
3 free agents (players who don't get drafted). [This can be ex-players]

There'll be consideration for father-daughter selections.

There'll also be allowances for injuries.

Can submit 5 marquee selections or have to?

If you really want to wrap up 2 players, just nominate 2 and you get them. Nominate more, you might get your 3rd, 4th or 5th choices.

I suspect the clubs will work together on this. If a player is set on staying somewhere as a marquee, clubs will discuss it with them and move on to the next possibility.

I note Daisy Pearce said there will be state based drafts as well but Sabrina Frederick-Traupe said she would be happy to go anywhere if she doesn't get her wish to stay in WA. A state based draft doesn't apply to Freo or Adelaide as they are the only ones in that state.

How would a player who is happy to move interstate chase their dream if the draft is state based? I assume there is a national one to fill the last few spots on a list and those not picked up in state can nominate for that.

Wasn't clarified re the marquees. I guess submit a list of 5 in case 2 clubs submit the same player?

On the draft side, by the sounds of it players will nominate if they want to stay in their state or whether they are willing to play anywhere.

Hmmm. So if you are unsure if you are guaranteed a spot in Freo's side, you would nominate for the open draft. I guess it is up to a club to tell a player that they will take them so don't nominate for the open draft.

I'd suggest the open draft is only going to be a top up draft and the real quality will be gone.

As for future drafts .... that will be intriguing.

My read is two will be assigned by the league with clubs putting in as many as 5 - presumably to cover conflicting nominations in Victoria - the rest will go into the state draft.

From interview, it seems they will put a lot of store in what the players and the clubs want, ie Daisy is 99.9% guaranteed to be at Melbourne.

However the games have already started, the West today reported that Kelly Gibson has been offered a full time position at the Adelaide Crows. The rationale seems simple enough. SA lacks clean skills and accurate disposal. Marinoff and even Cramey are more inside grunt players than finishers. Kelly is a good player, quick, aggressive, who has very clean skills and an accurate and penetrating kick. She offers what they lack. However, there could be as many as 6 or 7 ahead of her in line for a marquee spot at the Dockers. Tempt her with a full time position at the Crows, she nominates for SA only. They do not even need to make her a marquee player really, they can use that to secure other players. Given the speed of the announcement, I suspect they approached her a while ago.

Even though the cost of the womens comp will be borne by the AFL, the clubs are still going to have quite a number of new positions up for grabs in football departments, development and community liaison roles. Look to see these positions being used as an inducement to players.

There have been a few interviews with a number of players who have indicated that they just want to play, and they will go anywhere to be able to do it, so I do not think getting women to move for this comp is going to be as hard as some think.

They few thousand the non marquee players will get is not much of a financial inducement, but the full time job at the club, or promise of help landing a job with a sympathetic employer is.

Edit: The position is at the SANFL rather than the Crows, that aside, I think everything else stands. She got the job because they want her in the team, and nominating for the SA draft only will be part of the deal.

Not an appointment as such but come across this excerpt (do not have the full article)
The Western Bulldogs AFL side is confident of a strong commercial response to its inaugural women's team after shoring up its coaches' asset through a new deal with worker's compensation firm EML.

Carlton poach Damien Keeping from the Bulldogs

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/ca...e/news-story/8868a4a645ada676906ed1d693ef561d

CARLTON has poached Western Bulldogs coach Damien Keeping to lead its team in the inaugural national women’s league.

Only three weeks ago Keeping was instructing the Bulldogs women’s team as it defeated Western Australia at Etihad Stadium, but he’s now a Blue and will join the club in a full-time role in August.

Clubs will inform the AFL on Thursday their five most desired players – listing them in order of preference.

The AFL will select two 'marquee' players for each team – each will earn $25,000 for playing and more through supplementary employment and ambassadorial roles – aiming to construct as even a league as possible.

Players as good as locked in with clubs already

Adelaide – Kellie Gibson (employed by club)

Brisbane – Tayla Harris (employed by club)

Carlton – Darcy Vescio (employed by club), Lauren Arnell (Carlton women's footy ambassador and formerly employed by club)

Collingwood – Meg Hutchins (employed by club)

Greater Western Sydney – Maddy Collier (employed by AFLNSW)

Melbourne – Daisy Pearce (employed by club)

Western Bulldogs – Katie Brennan

Rack up another one for Carlton.

Brianna Davey will be giving up on W-League and has reached an in-principal agreement to work for Carlton (in community engagement) three days a week.

Means that one of Arnell and Vescio are out. That or Davey goes in as an FA. Would expect her to be a marquee though to compete with W-League salary.

Doesn't Arnell still work as a teacher? I find the balancing act the clubs are going to have to pull off fascinating. Players with jobs that can accommodate the footy season may not get the marquee positions, as they do not need the $25K. So Arnell stays as a teacher and gets maybe $10k, and Davey gets the marquee position and a part time job.

Likewise Gibson in SA may not get the marquee position as expected, because the SANFL have already given her a full time job. Use the marquee position to attract someone else instead.

I think the balance between the marquee and the 3 FAs is where the intrigue lies.
