According to some reports he has popped his clogs.

Officially denied by the guy has gone critical. Normal chance of recovery for people in critical is only 20%. If you factor in his age and illness, that drops considerably.

Even if he were to survive, he would probably never be 'fit' to actually rule again.

Who will take over?

Well it sounds as if he is dead, but isn't.

from AFP

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was Thursday "brain dead" and breathing only thanks to artificial life support systems, a French medical source said after conflicting reports as to whether he was alive or dead.

In strictly clinical terms, Arafat was "not dead," the source told AFP on condition of confidentiality, adding that the 75-year-old leader had slipped into an irreversible coma and could only be maintained in his vegetative state through ventiliation machines

The death of Arafat will close an era for good.

I think it is significant that Abbas is back on the scene.

The Palestinians are attempting a rationale transfer of power. Am sure this is why they are obfuscating Arafat's demise.

Will the terrorist groups lay down their arms and join a political process?

It is extraordinary this is happening just President Bush has been consolidated in power and has unparalleled authority.

Bush's public statement is a commitment to "a palestinian state living in peace with Israel."

Stand by ... history is writing a new page.

You cant be serious can you?

Crackafats death is only going to confuse the situation and I dont think the Palestinians are going to nominate Yassar Ghandi as his replacement.

You don't understand - the Euros are sick to death of the Palestinian situation. Everybody is. They're not going to put up with another 4 years of suicide bombings and disfunctional, lunatic , self destructive behaviour .. especially now that W has been re-elected. The saner palestinian leadership understands this. That's why Abbas is back in the picture.

The lastest on the news is that he is brain dead and having constant blood tranfusions.

His exodus from the scene can only help the palestinian cause; although it is going to be very messy in the short term. The cagey old devil has covered his turf well over the years but not having a succession plan in place.

One can only hope that Sharon cops a metaphorical bullet as well shortly so the peace process can really begin again.

That's pretty silly and unbelievable considering the doctors and his aides are denying it

It is not looking good for Arafat. I will very suprised if he returns to power.

I have absoloutly no doubt that the Palestinians will engineer a peaceful transfer of power, there has been nothing to suggest that the current PA cabinent anything other than a responsible and united front. This of course will leave Israel in a bad position because they have repeatedly stated they would not deal with Arafat, but with a new leader they will have to, otherwise they will quite rightly been seen to be obstructionist.

The other thing that will irk the Israelis is that they did not get the satisfaction of doing Arafat for themselves.

I await to see if Sharon manages to die of natural causes before he is topped by a nationalist.

Agree with Jane, history will turn a new page.
