Is this as straight forward as it looks and can you get on for much?

Are there any conditions in which both bets will be void?

I'm pretty sure bets will be voided if the player in question doesn't take his place in the tournament (you'd have to double check that), but other than that, it's pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have sufficient funds in your betfair account.
