What happens now to all of Sevens football stock footage? Will they lease it to nine or play petualant and not show it and leave it sitting on some shelf? When greats like Carey do retire in a few years, will we only see the last season or two highlights of their careers because thats all the content that the consortium (sounds more and more like a wrestling angle) will have to show?

Will the footy show now run highlights of games?

Of course im just speculating, Stokes might be cashing in some Yank dollars and be heading back ready to give the big finger to everyone!

if i was ch7 i would burn it all 45 yrs of helping make the game what it is today means jack shit to jacko.while the money is great for all the clubs look further down the track in 5yrs time when the rights are up for grabs.ch7 out of the piture=packer will get what he wants i guantee it wont be 100 mil a year for the next 5yrs.
super leugue aussie rules style after 2007?
cheers!

I always thought it was owned by a joint venture between the AFL and Ch7, but the way some of the articles in the paper read it is owned by 7 exclusively. Could provide some very interesting times if that is the case.

If they lose the current rights then it will be curtains for The Game, Rex's footy show et al.

Very odd that News Ltd have ended such a long association with 7 and gone against them though. It just goes to show how much they want the pay tv/Foxtel thing to take off.

Come on, this deal is for the benefit of clubs. What does 45 year old footage matter if YOUR club will not last the next five years under the deal that Seven gave.

We can't look at, oh no I might not have my favourite broadcaster, its time to look towards the future.

I'm sure seven would hire/rent it to nine and I believe that nine would probably buy it off them anyway. I was also the belief that the footage was part owned by the AFL, I'm sure that would be in a contract agreement somwhere.

Maybe if Seven doesn't release the footage to nine, they could sell videos of it or something. I'm getting a bit off track.

Oh and a question, why does more many always equal something bad? I mean why would we have a SuperLeague fiasco? The AFL runs the football remember!

Tiger-of-old, you should change your name to Profit of Doom. Lighten up a little.
Are you sure you're not a Geelong supporter, because you sound awfully like an old fashioned Brownlow Stand sitting supporter who can't except change.

As a certain Aussie Pop Diva once sang - Better the Devil you know! But, the Devil you don't know might not be a Devil at all.

One gets the feeling that Rupert and Kerry don't see eye to eye, Rupert is off with his newspaper and Pay TV arms, while Kerry is concerned about Channel 9 and new Kidneys. Don't forget about the bad blood between the two with the Superleague debacle. Thank god their kids can work together.

You have to think that this will be the catylist for a continuation of a 16 team competition in its current form. The money raised for the clubs will CERTAINLY keep EVERY Victorian club financially viable over the coming years.

You have to remember that for Interstate viewers getting the AFL on Pay TV and 5 games a week on free-to-air is a much much better deal than 7 were offering.

How many interstate games are there a week? 3 or 4 maximum, 3 games a week will be shown live from interstate, the other 2 will be from Victoria. It will only be on the very rare occasion, more than likely never, that you will miss out on seeing your team when they play interstate.

Your a Tigers supporter, so I presume you go every week as they all do, you can see your team play live every week and watch them opn TV 4-5 times a year interstate.

Anyway, what can we do about it if it doesn't come off and a superlegue if formed?

I say, at this stage it looks like a good deal for ALL supporters. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

PS: We're gonna be bombarded with nostalgic archival shows next year!

lol@profit of doom i.ll keep that in mind gocatsgo lol
ok i.ll lighten up a bit but its just the thought of having eddie mccollinwood.s bighead selling the gospal of his much loved collingwood not only on a thurs nite but now practically every other night with the collingwood show all week lol
cheers!

Tiger of old, can you please et over Eddie. He is there and will be for a while to come. So just get over the fact that he has got a foot in everything. I mean who wouldn't be happy with themselves to be doing as good as he is?

In Adelaide,The footy rights situation was rather different to Melb.

Channel 7 began telecasting SANFL in the very early 60's and Channel 9 got the rights for some years, back to seven, then 9, Channel 10 even had a go, bit of a mixed bag.
ABC had it in conjunction with 7 I seem to remember for some years.

Leading to the end of league football in SA
and the rise of what is now termed
'Local Footy' and the advent of the Crows.
football in SA rapidly began to decline as a spectacle and the Commercial channels wouldnt touch it.
The ABC took up the mantle. in the early 90's I think.

Channel 7 known as ADS 7 was bought by some one interstate who owned all channel 10's
and Channel 10 Adelaide was bought by someone
interstate (SAS10) who owned Channel 7.

They swapped stations and names i.e. ADS 7 Became ADS 10 and SAS 10 became SAS 7.

My thrust is this...

Channel 10 formerly Seven, never show old 7 branded football and they own all the tapes.

None of the stations rent, loan, give the others their footage for Grand Final nights or nostalgic shows etc..

It is rotting in their video vaults, some priceless classic league football.

None of the stations have enough video to make complete coherant sequential programs and they are not about to lend , Rent etc to the other Channels, for fear of losing something...

PA1870

So fat chance in Melbourne......

Thanks PA1870 (kind of) for an insight into how things could go with VFL stock. Makes you kind of ill doesnt it. Maybe they might be a little bit more receptive to the historical value of what they now have in their possesion, but people being how they are, you kind of doubt it.

Cheers.
