Are Essendon the sleeping giants of season 2025?

Fresh off an excellent win against Geelong in Geelong, are Essendon the team to worry about in 2025, a sleeping giant on the rise? Where do Essendon finish the season?

They look dynamic and highly skilled after a busy off-season. With a bunch of talented player.

There are also reports that they no longer ridicule players for working hard on their games and improving.

I think top 4 isn’t out of the question for this Bombers side.
Yawn. Not a single essendon supporter agrees with this. We might best case scenario make the top 8 but we are still a couple of years away from contending

No. They have been asleep since 5th September 2004.

7480 days and counting.

Seriously though, they don't have the primary list, nor the depth, to be in finals calculation for 2025.

We got 11 wins, 1 draw and lost another game after the siren last season, so we weren't that far off finals. And I think our best 22 has improved even without Stringer. I think we have a decent chance

Arguably replacing Stringer with Kako will be a massive improvement.

For all the goals he kicked, Stringer wasn't exactly consistent with his 'effort', only his lack thereof.

If they can beat Gold Coast in the opening round then they would most likely start favourites in their remaining 5 games until Anzac day.

Would be massive if they are 6-0 into Anzac day

Actually, Fagan admitted that to his amazement, after some serious heart to hearts with the playing group (when he took over) that many said they would rather be injured than play; due to the ridicule they faced from losing by the then coaching staff.

Brad has a point; the toxicity can be flushed out pretty quickly when the players start to trust and believe they can make mistakes again without judgement, as long as they learn from them. That takes support and trust from the coaching group and team culture, not ridicule.

Undefeated all the way to number 17 baby

On serious note Kako and Caddy are going to cause headaches for the opposition essendon fans are going to eat good for the next 10 years with those two
Caddy is the typical tall forward. When allowed to run and jump looks brilliant. Yet to see if he can play a role when things don't go his way.

Kako has had 1 practice match

We're tipped by many to finish bottom 4. Best we can hope for is a year like last year.

I don't see us making the top 8 and I'd rather we don't until we're ready to win a final. Better to focus on the draft to build a list capable of sustained success.

Let’s look at first 5 games

Gold Coast Away - 4 goal loss
Hawks Away - 2 goal loss
Crows home - 3 goal loss
Port home - 2 goal loss
Bye
Dees away- 1 goal loss

I think they’ll be more competitive but it’s a long way back to finals if they lose the first 5. Still, footy is a strange beast.

First win I’m tipping to be North in Rd 8.

That's what they said of our start last year too.

Essendon needs to work on their ability to play out the season.

That said, they're looking at long term and have the 4th youngest list.

Will be a few years yet for success, however I expect us to finish mid ladder.

The current algorithm aggregates don't have Essendon winning a game until round 2 (3rd game):
  • Opening round: Suns by 10 points
  • Round 1: Hawks by 19 points
  • Round 2: Essendon (over Crows) by 4 points

Of course, the algorithms would swing wildly if they have a big win over the Suns, so it is hard to project forward past the first match.
