Are gyms for fat people?

One of the trainers/managers at my gym will without fail take a smoke break during his work-out. It's truly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my life. He knocked back a McDonalds Frozen Coke after his work-out the other day.

Gyms are full of madness.

Do gyms exist specifically for fatties, or are there advertised 'fatty-friendly' gyms?

Agree with the sentiments that you are unlikely to see an overweight person being mocked for exercising. Not sure what would motivate someone to mock a fat person for trying to get in shape. If fat people engender rage within you you're better off heading to your nearest shopping centre food court to find one carrying his KFC bucket back to his seat on his gopher...

Gyms are full of madness.

There's a chain of gyms in the US, Planet Fitness, that offer free pizza nights once a month and massive candy jars full of tootsie rolls. They brag about going through 24,000 slices of pizza a year and 750,000 tootsie rolls a month.

These same gyms refuse membership to anyone who is too muscular and have an alarm that goes off any time anyone grunts too loudly or drops some weights.

Ironically enough their motto is 'Judgement Free Zone".

yep gym's are madness.my gym well Leisurelink centre with gym in it.the cafe in the center sells hot chips, dim sims,p cakes, hot jamdonuts, lollies, cakes.l am like what the hell.just money making but still.

Not everyone goes to the gym to lose weight. If you're there to gain muscle mass or work on your fitness a high calorie snack isn't the worst thing in the World.

Btw OP, my last post wasn't meant to sound like it was having a go at fat people in gyms.

I totally agree with the consensus in this thread that the overwhelming majority of people will just think good on you for making the effort.

(On the other hand I also agree that you can't help but inwardly scoff when you see a fat person lining up at a fast food joint)

I lost a heap of weight a few years ago, just exercising at home then walking and eventually jogging

Every few weeks random people where i used to walk would say something like 'keep going, cant believe how much weight you've lost, congratulations.' Most people if they notice you at all will be thinking positive thoughts so dont worry

I manage to avoid this by not worrying too much about what other people do with themselves.

Going by yourself can be a little daunting especially if youre overweight like i was when i first started going (126 down to 93 in a bit over a year :)). The best thing i found was to go with a friend or someone on a similar level to you.

It mainly helped me with motivation because we would always be competing with each other and spurring each other on. Neither of us would be willing to let each other do more sets, the second person had to match whatever the first person did.

After a while i changed gyms because i couldnt go at the same time as my mate anymore and started going by myself. It def helped me being familiar with being in a gym for the previous 3 months or so because it meant that i could just plug in my headphones and go about my business without worrying about what everyone else around me was doing.

P.S OP if you want a bit of a boost shedding the Kgs, try some green tea. I started losing weight without changing much else in my lifestyle by drinking 1-2 cups a day before i started going to the gym regularly. It tastes pretty ordinary at first but after a while it grows on you

I would appreciate some honest feedback here on whether or not a fat person can feel comfortable going to a gym full of fit healthy people.

I am rather large and would really like to go to the gym and get fitter and healthier, maybe with the help of a personal trainer. i eat reasonably well but I drink too much and I am pretty lazy.

I have always put it off thinking I will just lose a bit of weight and get a bit fitter by going for walks etc first so I don't embarrass myself, which obviously is a catch 22 and it never happens.

My question is, as a rather unfit overweight person, would other gym users riducule me and humiliate me or would they be too focussed on themselves?

I would really appreciate honest responses.

I've been hitting the gym regularly for the past 8 years in that time I've been a member of 5 different gyms. The only people that look at others in a negative way are insecure douche bags who are hanging on by a thread emotionally anyway.

Personally and any friend I know that goes to the gym are far more focused on themselves. We spend 95% of our time focusing on pushing ourselves harder and maybe working through the days events in our mind.

The 5% we look at anyone else is normally to admire the opposite sex (Or whatever gets you going).

In all honesty when I see someone who is overweight I actually find it a bit inspiring because they are normally working allot harder than I am.

Start with a personal trainer so you learn proper form and the level you need to hit to see results and then get invovled.

yeah starting with a trainer is good to get the right technique and help design the program you want

whether its build muscle, cardio and all that stuff

Saw this episode of the Daily Show with Jason Jones covering it late last year. Hilarious... oh those Yanks.

Since I started in a management position and married a Croatian, I have put on weight. I started the gym last year then got really busy at work and got out of the habit of going as I prefer to go before work and was starting work at 5 am. I had not been for a few months.

I read this thread yesterday and was back at the gym this morning. I feel fantastic. It is the best start to the day.

I go to Jetts, a 24 hour gym and I can honestly say that I have never felt judged once. This morning there was only one guy there when I arrived and when we passed each other, there was just a nod and a quite hello and we both got on with our work out.

If you say so.

I guess you just temporarily forgot your saintliness when you wrote this yesterday.

Did he ever! and he's posting for the sake of it with no idea of what he's on about.

On topic. Is the OP joking? Of course gyms are for fat people. It's such a silly question i thought (think) it was a pisstake.

No pisstake, was genuinely concerned that I would make a dick of myself, not being able to run like the pros on the treadmill being totally un-co and not being able to lift weights without blowing a gasket.

It has seriously been an issue for me for ages, I wanted to go but could not get up the courage to walk in the door, thinking everyone would be looking and waiting to have their laugh for the day, and only a fat person would understand this.

But for the record and thanks to the overwhelmingly positive feedback on here I finally sucked it up and went for the first time yesterday morning. I picked EFM, a relatively small gym with personal attention, I feel really comfortable and was heartily encouraged, shown what to do properly and it was quite a proud moment for me, even though I can't move a muscle today without pain. - but like they say, no pain no gain.

Cheers everyone for the positive words.

I was the same. I was pretty fat as a kid but never the fattest so I was self-conscious about exercising but probably not as much as some other people.

I started out by running on a desolate road out the back of my place up and down the two (relatively mild hills). Didn't take long for the weight to start to melt off. Took much longer before I got the courage to run on the slightly busier road.

But no-one's really watching or caring. And if they are, who gives a ****? They're not worth knowing.

keep at it mate.

l know what work and r'ships can do to your routine.

Thanks - I am pretty determined to just improve my overall health this year. Not looking for any one magic bullet. I have cut my drinking down substantially and that is without ever being a really big drinker.

My problem is I socialise so much. I really enjoy my food and drink and it took me a while to realise that my 45 YO body does not just burn the fat like it did when I was a teenager/20 something training or playing competitive sport 7 days a week .

The thing is exercising just makes you feel so much better. I am thinking of doing yoga at some point too.

Whenever I see people exercising they are always thin, healthy people. Then I think, "Why are they doing that? Why aren't the fat peope doing that?" Then I realize I've answered my own question.

I don't fully understand gyms though. If you don't have a place for weights at your house or a cheap place to swim, then I guess a gym might be your answer. But what about people who pay to walk on a treadmill? You can walk for free. You can walk up stairs for free. You can ride a bike for the price of a bike - which would pay for itself in time. I wouldn't pay to go to a gym to do something that you can do any time outside of the gym.

The fat people probably want to be doing that and deep down know they should be doing that - but for some reason, it takes an epiphony to make it happen.
