He was 38. So the right thing to do is to let him play at 39 and keep a kid out as the team finishes bottom 4?

Sorry, at 38 he had plenty of opportunity to make the call and he chose to put himself ahead of the team.

100% the right call by the club.
Completely different case when the player in question is still performing at a reasonably high level.

Harvey averaged 21.6 disposals and kicked 36 goals in 23 games for the 2016 season.

He would have been far more valuable than say Lindsay Thomas this season.

If he was cooked (ala Jonathan Brown 2014) then it might be a different story.

**** yeah, let's all take turns kicking North! They might not have talent or desirability, but at least they've got a 10 year winning streak against Melbourne!

Srsly tho, 5 Million dollareydoos a year and they can't even recruit a bum of the street!

Just fold them already or merge them with those shitcampaigners from Queensland!

**** NORTH MELBOURNE WOOOOOO!!!!
we will give you 100million dollars just piss off

NO ONE LIKES YOU

its also about on-field leadership. North lost 5 games by under a kick this year, i doubt they would have lost quite so many if Boomer was in the side.

That's narrow minded. Thomas Swallow Hansen were given fairwells and they already have a replacement for Goldstein if they lose him.
You can't play a side of complete under 23s or you get belted and your side doesn't develop

Chasing every F/A and uncontracted player available, OK list but nothing to write home about - Are they worried bottoming out is going to put them in a precarious position going forward?

Currently in no man's land as a club, and certainly not an attractive destination.
There's a guy in my team at work who is a gun and I don't want to lose. I've shot Scott an email asking for him to offer my bloke a big contract, just so I can sure him up here for a couple of years...

Hansen's already gone. He got a farewell game because Nielson was injured.
Thomas played because Garner was injured. And along with Swallow and Goldstein could be shown the door or playing elsewhere next season.

Bahaha classic Bigfooty, one poor season and the knives are out.
Not really.

You made finals last year and the knives were out then too. Largely because everyone could see that you had loaded up and not even come close and that a very steep cliff was fast approaching. It's not "one bad year" it's the start of a lot of bad years and it's something that most saw coming.

Exactly, his leadership would help North in a transition period.
Not sure if North people (other than supporters) can see or consider that.

Recruitment of a couple of 'On-field' leadership type players would be a big plus, not those with potential, but those that are proven.

Stats are totally irrelevant. He could have probably played until he was 45. Just cause you can doesn't mean you should. Team first.

Rubbish.

IMO the main reason for North's drastic slide down the ladder has been a lack of on field leadership.

Would North have lost 5 games by under a goal this season if Boomer was still playing, I doubt it.

Most rebuilding sides require experienced veterans to instill leadership qualities and the intangibles upon the incoming generation.

Boomer has those in spades, PLUS the bonus of a reasonably strong form line to justify his position.

Maybe worry about your own backyard, before you worry about Norths.

The why was boomer still being selected to play? Obviously those that he was supposedly holding back were not as good as him. Regardless of age, the best should be selected to play.....!
Point is that if you kept Boomer on the list this year he would have been playing seniors. Brad Scott admitted as much.

That means less games for any one of the 11 youngsters who made their senior debut this year.

Which was more important?

i dont think they have much of a choice. poor performances hurts em harder due to their relatively smaller support base compared to the big 4 so they need to keep themselves up.

Exactly, which is why Hawthorn haven't booted Burgoyne onto the street.

Burgoyne's leadership has helped to transition Hawthorn's once aging backline into a very promising defense.

So Boomer plays and they win an extra 5 games and they finish 10th or 11th. Well done that helps them a lot.

Be interesting to hear if Nth fans prefer to blood 11 youngsters and get 4th pick in the draft or give Boomer another year and take up games and get the 8th or 9th pick.

You're ignoring the leadership aspect of my argument.

Gutting a club rapidly of it's senior players is rarely a good idea. (See Melbourne circa 2008, Richmond 2007, Brisbane 2014, ect).

My argument is that with any successful transition process, a club would be wise to retain it's more valuable veterans in order to pass on desirable qualities onto the next generation.

I'm not implying that Boomer should be playing forever, I think that his on-field presence is more valuable than a top 4 pick in what is considered to be a weak draft.
