yes port went close to a preliminary final this year and consider themselves in a premiership window
But the massive changes to the list are they needed ? Rocky , watts and Motlop are all great gets but they are linked to many more , for a start are they needed ??? Seems mad to me !

Port were about as close to winning a flag last season as I was in getting 6 numbers in Lotto.

Koshie seemed really disappointed at their finish this year. They didn't exactly fold in the EF, the only hotly contested final this year.

At the end of the day like every club they made calls at trade time they thought would help them improve next year. Pretty bold thisyear though.
Rockcliffe has to be a plus for any team. Motlop and Watts are players who have shown talent and whose clubs didn't want them. Port clearly believe that can get the best out of them. We've had great success with Heater and Mummy who were pushed out, only time will tell.
I don't think they're flag favourites and I think they'll struggle to do better than their neighbours, but they are in the mix and I think will improve.

They are facing a situation where many of their key players are at the back end of their careers. For the last few years they have been trying to build a premiership team but the clock is ticking so they have decided to attempt to buy a premiership team.

The equation is pretty simple, they either win a flag in the next 3-4 years or they face a decent sized rebuild. However, if they get lucky with their recruiting they may avoid a full rebuild or rebuild at all. They still have a few young players that have more to give and 5+ years in the tank.

Salary cap may be the biggest issue.

We were carried mostly by our younger players this season and would've been smashed in the EF if it wasn't for our younger players (and Charlie) dragging us back into it. Wines, Wingard, Marshall, Houston, Bonner, Clurey, Johnson, Frampton and co. ensure we won't have a North Melbourne sized rebuild on our hands if this window closes.

And when our elder statesmen retire that frees up heaps of coin. The "now or never" and bulging salary cap queries are both complete bullshit. We're well equipped on and off the field for a tilt at the flag over the next 8-10 years.

If there's improvement, it won't be from their new recruits.

You would have been pretty tight on the cap already and have just added close to $2mil in players. Trengove wasn’t on that much and the younger players you have mentioned will want more coin before the contracts of your senior players run out.

It’s definitely not a North type failure or Carlton but the success of those younger types has been reliant on the mature heads. Take them out of the team without adequately replacing them will result in a rebuild. But if your later picks are above average you may do well at avoiding a rebuild scenario.

There’s no doubt your full hand is on the table.

This is the last roll of the dice for Ken. If it doesn't work, he will get turfed out and they will start a full rebuild within the next couple of years.

Port have delisted/retired/traded 11 players. Lets say on average those players were on $300k. That's $3.3 million in space lifted.

Over doing it? They have stocked up on some ordinary players, i see no real change for them, Kochie will go nuts by round 7. Perhaps he could get Milo to do some PR work for them?

You're right, we should have done what collingwood or North did instead. Underdoing it.

If all 3 flop feel free to remake this thread about how pick 31 could have been a gun.

Probably going a little over the top agreed, but anyone who thinks that we are an "older" team needing a flag in the next year or two or go full rebuild, should have a closer look.

Over 27yo? 4 players only - Westhoff Ryder Gray and Boak.

Unless Lobbe's contract was closer to 1.5 mil, the 11 blokes you got rid of weren't getting paid 3.3 mil between them.

Relatively good picks up for Port. Esp Rocky. Others are risky, but very talented.

Can see them getting better. Maybe a contended. But who knows many clubs in that basket for 2018 - about 6 I'd say.

The changes reek of desperation. Should be looking to offload some of those overrated pieces for currency while they can.
