I know the ALP have tried to put up celebrity candidates before, but the Libs must be joking if this is the best they can come up with.

Liberals look to the stars
By IAN HABERFIELD

FORMER Richmond coach Danny Frawley and swimmer Tammy van Wisse top a list of high profile candidates Victorian Liberals hope will help them topple Steve Bracks.

Buoyed by the Howard Government's success at last weekend's poll, senior state Liberals identified a hit list of well-known and respected Victorians the party wants to recruit before year's end.

Heading the list are Mr Frawley, who is likely to be offered the chance to contest a Ballarat seat; Ms van Wisse who lives in Gembrook; television personality Glenn Ridge; and former cricketer Dean Jones.

Dean Jones? Well after his pathetic commentating this indian tour, he certainly won't get any votes. Did anyone hear he made 210 in Madras once? It will probably be his campaign to win votes.

He's guilty of precisely the same thing Crean was when he was leader of the opposition. Everything's negative, he's doing and saying anything to get on the TV. If anything, supporting the Scoresby tollway is a consistent position for the Liberals to take. But no, supporting it might make his swing at the next election only 3% instead of 6%.

Latest trend from Morgan polls as you can see the Libs under Doyle are going nowhere and Bracks' vote is the same as in the 2002 election.
Dolye will need more than whingeing about the Tollway in two years time to make any impact.

I know the Liberals wanted to go for Steve Monaghetti for the Ballarat region and federally, they approached Russell Mark for that area.

Things must be desperate in Liberal HQ.

If that person also holds qualifications and experience in areas outside of their sporting endeavours, then all well and good.

That said, it wouldn't be a bad idea that Madden, who at least is a qualified and experienced architect, should be Planning Minister, but, at least he is Victoria's Sports Minister.

Peter Garrett as the Federal Minister for Funky Dancing perhaps pazza?

[Edit - meant Shadow Minister of course - would like to see his Ministerial Opponent try to win that one in debate!]

And the Libs once approached Dean Jones to stand for the seat of Gisborne.

And if they don't have anything to add, and are in fact being pre-selected ahead of someone who does for the sole reason they have a high public profile?

Surely that is for the voters to decide. Don't quite know where the idea that you had to be 'qualified' crept into the equation. Surely the 'qualifications' include common sense, dedication and having some empathy for the people who elect you. Don't see how being a lawyer gives someone much of an edge over a swimmer, muso, teacher, brick layer etc.

Also add Phil Cleary and Damian Drum to the sportsman's list and Mary Delahunty, Ian Cover and Alister Patterson to the media-celebs list. Heaps of them around ... but Danny Frawley (shakes head in disbelief) ???

Maybe the idea that a politician is central to the legislative (law-making) process might have somethning to do with it.

Part of being a politician is having the ability to make and change law. I'd rather an lawyer be part of changing the law, than a brick-layer.
