In order to win premierships you need to win finals... and make prelims... First it was Port who havent gone past us now its another prelim finalist .. north, that havent gone past us. Some serious delusional people on this board now.

The last 2 preseaons we have lost Tuck, King and Jackson out of out 2013 "15 win" season.... the 2013 side would beat the 2014 side... We went backwards in 2014 with the easiest draw we will see for a long time.

Are we really improving??? NO we havent improved over the last 12 months.... As mentioned we have not improved our assistant coaches stocks after losing Leppa, Campbell and Daly. We have not improved out talent pool via free agency and trades.

So in order to improve we need our players we already have to improve collectively.... this will take clever coaching from someone who needs to understand the squads strengths and coach to them. My worry with Hardwick is he has a picture in his mind on what works and how he thinks the side should play to win a premiership which doesnt actually fit what we have..... Too many times he has played players out of position, or given them roles that doesnt enable than to play to their strengths.... Grigg as a run with player is a perfect example.

I don't remember seeing Grigg as a run with player, what games did he do this? further more what is wrong with him being a run with player?

The concept of a lack of speed is a very good one and it was clearly visible in the EF
For us to have gained any improvement we at least need Lennon to step it up and he's looking great by pics on the training thread
We also need to draft a quality player who can hopefully readily displace one of our turtles
I wouldn't mind picking up some rookie with speed
from the vfl if they exist.
People are now coming up with some great ideas

Play is best footy as link up player... can take a good grab and has a penetrating kick. We have been trying to make into something he is not... just my opinion.

tigerimposter I don't know why you liked my last post on this thread. I see us (as in the club) having started to question professionalism as a positive for 2014. You either misunderstood or you see it as an improvement too?

that's fine i just don't remember him being turned into a run with player, correct me if i'm wrong.

That's the one I can think of.

I like Houli's creativity but he is so, so slow that he is too easy to take out of the game.

I think Richmond need to draft a fast, endurance ball user to run flank to flank and link play. That first kick into the zone needs to be aimed at a player who can get into space before it's closed down, the second one is to a much more open ground so it's not so important.
Houli isn't slow, not fast either mind you. Thomas is slow.

We are obsessed with it IMO. Creating and winning stoppages seems to be our focus. Our flat footed lock in type play got smashed by port. If continue down that track it will be Dimmas final season IMO
I like the fact that we are obsessed with winning CB. Its the basis of playing footy and if you cant win the pill, you cant win.

Grigg did run with roles mainly 2 seasons ago to good effect(see Libba). Not so much last year tho.

Agree but you still need the guys with at win CB to have poise skills to hit someone who is capable of finishing or breaking the lines to release to someone in a better spot
No point winning CB if you waste it bc of a lack of skill or support around you
Hodge Mitchell and Lewis are masters at it backed up with their release avenues
It's hArd to topple , but our midfield is young whereas they're ageing so its not impossible to beat them at it We still need to get the run and carry players though

Absolutely agree. But it is a great place to start and all players need to be able to do it when its their turn.

tagged ward in our first 2014 gws encounter and kept him to single figures. miles ran with him mainly in the later clash and miles was ok but ward easily took the honours.

Its interesting to note the article in the age about Port losing another 2 million this year, on the top of a 2 million plus loss last year and the year before. A quote in the article really highlighted a good point. Here is the quote

"While Port Adelaide has invested heavily in its football department over the past three years, the club remains in the bottom third of the competition in terms of football spending. "I'm not sure where else we can look if we can't profit after this year," Thomas said.

It is funny, Richmond FC actually spent more then Port on our footy spend this year but Port had a great year winning finals and we did not. So when in part it balances the argument that RFC does not spend enough, it also shows what smart spending can and will do to lift us higher in the ladder. The positives though for us Tigers is that we have a club who has been in the black for a while now and in real terms only recently have state of the art facilities and a proper number of development coaches.....obviously they take time to really take an effect on the list.

Also it highlights that maybe going back into debt might not be a bad thing. Port have been in the red for a long while now, if it was a modern business in the real world ie outside of the AFL it would be trading insolvent :P BUT yet they still pay mega bucks to certain staff and players. My question, would it be harmful for us to do the same ?

its called a long term investment.A bit like a mortgage on a house.it will come back
SMART SPENDING -or doing the important things on the cheap has been our nemesis.
I will see who we pick up at 2015 trade time to see how much of your little rant will come to fruition.
no salesmanship lines please .

If we were achieving how we have been achieving in the red then God help us. If we are spending more on our footy department than Port and not achieving the same result then it's time to change the people we are paying not pay more .

If the new trend is to be in the red well I can say we've tried that and it didn't work then. I am an advocate for us replacing Daley this year though, still don't know who is going to be our forward line coach as I'm presuming Lade won't be given the chance again and will stay in the middle.

Rant and salesmanship, no need to go the man mate . I just highlighted a fact in regards to spend over performance. How you take that as a rant is beyond me but I guess its just normal to slag off another blokes opinion.

TigerImposter See mate, this is a proper response actually replying to the post.

You hit the nail on the head, in what i was saying Rusty, thanks. Bottom line, if a club like Port who are running a club that in any other business would be broke and STILL getting improvement, we as a club should not hold our hat on just being profitable. Yeah its great we are profitable, but we as of yet have not reached any great heights of improvement ie win a final then a flag. So is it time now to not play as safe as we have in the last 3 -4 years and embrace the reality around us that clubs can carry debt IF we have the right people in the right roles doing the right jobs?

no man hunt. i never do this.
Every venture is a risk and your best chance is investing in the Admin FD first.
if it fails then at least youve given it your professional and best shot first.
Sorry if you thought i was being a pxick.i had to put it in perspective:(

Spend an extra 2 Mil on the Football dept if it means we actually win a final.
Imagine winning at least 1 final what it would mean to the club the following year.
Port have us over a barrel currently on the field but off it,We whip their ass.

What worries me is we are not fully taking advantage of this.
You make hay while the sun shines

We actually offered significantly more than port to Burgess, for some unholy baffling reason his wife wanted to live in Adelaide.

Is Lenny Hayes committed to joining us next year still?

IMO I dont think a Lenny Hayes will make us better, again he will be a first time assistant and god knows we have enough of them. What we need to do is use our financial muscle, brand, and allure of being a team on the rise, its why 2015 is critical for us, to get a bloke like a graham Wright from the Hawks or a elite fitness guru in David Rath etc.

We need to use the infomus warchest not just on cattle on the field but use to to also raid successful organisations.
