If the AFL was The EPL.

GFC would have had very nice secondary silverware to prove our season was a success ( if not the ultimate success).

From 2004 when we ran Brissie close in the prelim!

I celebrate making the 8. I love making the GF. Winning the premiership is a mind blower.

AND I am getting used to it.

After 44years of Nada.

Go Cats.

I think Geelong are the Arsenal of the EPL

They are highly consistent , year in year out they win a stack of games , they are allways high up in the ladder/table , Top 4 or Top 6 at worse

They are allways challenging for the title , but for all their games won and the number of years they are legitimate challengers they dont win enough Silverware , that is the bottom line

Wrong.

Arsenal haven't won a major trophy since 2004. Geelong have won 4 premierships since then.

Are they 1998-2004 era Arsenal? Possibly, and that wouldn't be an insult.

The consistently top PL clubs are all rich (or became rich) so it's easier to remain top level. No salary cap, no draft. Simply remaining a top team for 20+ years in the AFL is an achievement of a much higher standard.

Goggin then was sacked and went on to coach Footscray for 23 wins in 3 seasons.

Career finals coaching record 1 win and 4 losses. Career coaching record in prelim finals was 0 wins 2 losses.

No you have got it around the wrong way he coached Footscray before he coached Geel

2 factors you overlook , when he coached Footscray , Gary Dempsey was Captain , 6 time B/F winner at 2 clubs and a Brownlow Medalist , in his tribute to K Templeton getting in the AFL Hall of fame , Dempsey in the video calls Billy a great coach , that is high praise to me

The other point you are over looking , in the 70s Geel were utter garbage , in 1980 Goggins 1st year , they win the minor Premiership with 17-5 record . To put that in perspective , imagine either Essendon or Carlton , with their very ordinary past 2 decades , a new coach comes in the 26 season , and with the same list wins the Minor Premiership , but doesnt win the GF , i think you would say that is a pretty good effort

The goalposts you are using to evaluate coaches are moving all over the place.

If c Scott finished 1st on the ladder and went out in straight sets, including getting beaten by the lowest placed finals team in a prelim, you would be calling for his head.

I have a partner who worships Hawthorn.

She's watched them win premierships every decade.......until 2015.

Her belief is that Geelong has underperformed. Her contention is that they've only lost 6 in their history, whilst we've played in 19 but only won 10, and went 44 years without a win.

I find it hard to argue.

Hawthorn were recipients of probably the strongest zoning region during the 70’s/80’s that netted them an incredible team who stacked on premierships and grand final appearances. Let’s not fool ourselves that it was much else.

08-15 netted them four flags from Clarkson in his prime, which was an incredible feat.. but even look at Clarkson since those days, he was unable to sustain longevity with hawks and has been a train wreck at north since.

The longevity Scott has achieved while turning over probably 50-60 players in the 22?? (Guesstimate) with full equalizing measures is just unheard of

The Mayblooms.... that's a good place to start.

Hawthorn's start to AFL and until the 60s? was much worse than our handbag era and much longer. We had silverware before they were able to even get a club organised.

Be gentle tho....all of this is part of the rich tapestry of the AFL. And celebrate together the fact that Aussie rules footy began organised competition decades before any other code on the world.

[Fact checkers correct my off the top of the head post if needed]

Don't disagree, but she labels all that as just 'whinging and excuses'.

I tread very gently don't worry.....I haven't met a more fervent, adoring, rabid Hawthorn fan in my life 😑

Question for those here…

Would you happily erase Garry ablett senior as a geelong player in exchange for a single premiership during his playing era??
NO. Absolutely not. Ablett gave 20 spectacular games (ok, maybe 15 out of 20) every year for 13 years. He reduced me to tears of joy innumerable times. He WAS his playing era. The rest were bit players to the main attraction. I've also loved the Selwood era, or Thomson/Scott era for the quality of play and players, both on and off the field, and the premierships and I have nothing but admiration for it but NOTHING was like Ablett on song.

Agreed. I wouldn’t swap Ablett for a premiership during those years. I doubt any cat fan would

And for me, this is proof that there is more to enjoying footy than just premierships

My EPL team is Arsenal, and I agree completely; but it's nice that they are always thereandabouts.

I agree, but Hawks fans see it differently, of course.
And how would we have gained a flag in his era without him?

No. 2 reasons
1. We went to watch ABLETT play, no matter the result, and we didn't know about flags...
2. Without Senior, there is no GAJ, and the joy he also gave us, as the amazing son of a gun, is huge as well. And to a lesser extent, the 07 version of Nathan Ablett, tantalising as it was, I really loved as well.

Ps.. wash your mouth out for even suggesting such a thing

Agree 100%
More making the point that there is more to enjoying footy than simply premierships.

Correct.

Absolutely delighted I got to see his career and in that sense am at peace with not seeing a premiership in his time.

He was truly a one off.

But then I'm not sure any true CLUB supporter can truly accept a lack of premiership success over decades.

GAS was a welcome, and unsurpassed, distraction during our 44 years in the wilderness.

It is tough to argue
But they were shit for 50 years before that

Congratulations to you both. Long may it continue.

In an increasingly polarised black & white world, it is great to see!

Which team do the kid(s) support? I know one family where they took the kid to it's first game featuring both parents' teams. The winner was the team the kid would support (at least in theory).
