WHEN WILL FREO LEARN

DRAFT LOCAL

Once again we have drafted eastern states players.Cassies went to port,an up and coming west aussie yet we let him go.Drafting eastern state players only leads to one of 3 situations
1.expensive exercises in keeping them
2.Developing them only to see them leave
3.They saty
The last one being in the minority

I cant understand these people on the board at the dockers
Mc Neil has to go, him an neesham put the club behind 5 years from the beggining.Neesham goes yet he stays.
unbelievable

Delisting Carrole yet keeping Mc Manus
WELL DONE

Gotta feel sorry for drumie, done everything right so far, brought a list that last year was the poorest in the comp and got the best out of the kids to develop a future force. Not even sheedy could have done better himself last year
Yet he is still under pressure from the idiots that put him under pressure in the first place.

I have said this before-
How many reserves key position backmen do we have- not carroting one!!! We barely have enough in the seniors. Southern's gone, Croft had a great season but is getting on a bit, Ellis is ALWAYS injured and we don't know whether he can find form after being out of the game for so long.

Well fine, go draft 3 midfielders, one ruckman that ALL need at least 2-3 years to develop (same with last years drafted midfielders except Hahn). Michael Handby is available at 26, key position backman, got a bit of muscle on him, almost ready to step up straight away if required, but a team is too worried about reading form their carroting cue cards because their discussion is being beamed to the whole country...

In 3 years, when West, Johnson etc are 26-27, Eagleton, Brown are 24, we will have 15 midfielders all up (maybe more after the next two drafts), who knows how many developed fringe midfielders waiting in the ressies with NO senior experience, YET how many key position backmen???.... 0

Well at least if you are going to pursue a youth policy, go all out with it and not just give the kids a confidence breaking 3 minutes per quarter.

Nathan Brown is an example of what happens when you promote a youngster and show a bit of faith in him. Alvey, Plunkett are examples of what happens to raw talents at our club under the 150 ressies games policy- delisted or waiting for jokes like Jose to get suspended to get a call up.

Off the top of my head, Murphy, Gilbee, Giansiracusa.... now McMahon, Girss, Cross.... how many under-developed young smalls/mid sized players do we honestly need??? Like I have said before, Hunter/Ellis get injured... and Libba's CHB... ummmm... no.... that would be silly.... full back... that's better.

Don't get me wrong, Terry Wallace is a brilliant coach, and I would die if he left our club, but it has now been 5 (FIVE!!!) carroting drafts with only one player genuinely making it from "his" selections (Brown). I'm hoping i eat my words due to a couple of norwich rising star nominations!!!

Not Happy one little bit.
We needed Key Position players, we got midfielders, which we have plenty of.
Why did we get Pike, for Christs sake.Heatly would have been better, anyone would have been better.

Replace the word FREO with RICHMOND ...

I did not see it but apparently Mark Coughlan looked extremely unhappy about being drafted across to the other side of the country.

Yea, very happy thanks. Ries looks promising from what ive heard and read. Greenes got the pedigree and abilty to back it up from reports also. Williams is the 'hunch' pick that may never do a thing or be one of those 'how did he last so long' storys. And Lonie, well by accounts has good skills and size about him plus the Woods took the dud twin so im confident he will make it

Also 3 of the 4 were from the sandy dragons may help them settle into the Hawks a little quicker than might happen if they all came into it without knowing anyone.

Add to the fact that we had some reject targetted who was taken before we could pick him up with our last pick (no more B.Youngs thanks) im pretty happy with it so far. Ask me again in four years for a more detailed report.

I'm a bit disappointed the Crows chose young Vic players, they don't seem to last long at Adelaide. Especially concerned about Matthew Smith, who no-one seems to know anything about. The other two lads have at least played together in the Dandenong Stingrays, so maybe won't feel so lonely.

The whole interest here in Adelaide is the Power's selection of Kane Cornes. I'm disappointed we didn't get him, but in their wisdom the Crows chose Angwin instead. I get the feeling the media here think the Power have done better in their selections by picking up brothers of current players, which will make for a happy team in the future.

Wrapped absolutely over the moon... would have liked another 2 Picks... Krakouer (richmond) and Buchannan (sydney) but to get the vic country CAPTAIN, vic metro CAPTAIN, and a BROTHER at last... I am over the moon... and it only got better with the big SAV...

How many talls is enough? I was reading this thread were WestyBoy bemoans the doggies lack of talls and TigerTank is not happy with our selection of more short people.

This go me thinking - how badly off for talls are Richmond, and how many do you need?

By my reckoning, we have 12 'talls' on our list (190+cm). For the sake of balance, it would say that this is plenty.

For the record, here they are (I guessed at a few measurements):
Gaspar (193)
Ottens (200)
Richo (196)
Holland (196)
Steinfort (198)
James (194)
Gale (198)
Homewood (190)
Bourke (194)
Hall (190)
Kellaway (190)
Vardy (193)

That would be Andrew (190) not Duncan (185) Kellaway

But instead of just listing players as talls, you need to distinguish whether they play like a tall.

For example, we drafted Mark Gale from the dockers who is apparently 190cm and our supporters have automatically labelled him a key defender, perhaps at full back. Yet if my memory serves me correct, he is a pacy half-back/midfielder and has never played as a key position player.

Oh well, in regards to our selections I am quite pleased. It looked like we were always going to go with Riewoldt and I'm glad we went with Koschitzke over Didak because good quality kids with that height, athleticism and ability are almost impossible to come across.

Because our third pick in the draft was not until 64, around the time where clubs were starting to pass, many of the quality youngsters were taken so we went for Mark Gale and Robbie Powell. If Powell has a good run with injuries and can improve his discipline (perhaps keeping away from our ruckman would be a good idea) he should be OK. Brian Waldron was impressed with him when he was at Richmond and after all of the changes of late that he has orchestrated, I am certainly not going to doubt Brian Waldron's opinion.

But the last selection in the draft was by far the most popular for saints fans. To see a guy like Daniel Wulf play so well all year in the VFL side and be rewarded was magnificent. Probably one of the main reasons why having a stand alone club in the VFL is beneficial is the ability for a player to hidden throughout the year. I don't think it is any coincidence that the week we had the ABC game against Sandy, he played two minutes and the next week at Moorabbin he was back taking big marks and kicking goals. Remarkably, saints fans on the St Kilda fan forum were too reluctant to mention his name in case someone from another club were to spot his talent and grab him before we had a chance. Now he has his chance, we are all hoping like anything that he makes the most of the opportunity.

tigertank, perrifer is a great player, running midfielder/forward who can kick a goal, will be a great help for richo, holland etc
dont know much about coughlan
chris hyde and andrew krakour are good future players, will be handy when knights retires and lets face it campbell and daffy arent as young as they used to be, may also free daffy up forward in a year or two
overall i think rich did pretty well

as for the bombers im pretty happy
no one has seen a great deal of davies and richards but sheedy and the rest of the recruiting staff must know a bit about them to draft them so high

sam hunt seems a strong defender, dean solomon style

bannister is a great pick up at 47, tall strong marking chf, if he can take off how will teams compete with hird, lloyd, lucas, rioli, mercuri, bannister, scary though
maybe will replace alessio as a tall forward in the next few years

marc bullen is also a great pic, another ruck rover, something we need, won the cannons b&f, has great skills and is tough and hard

michale davis- im suprised to get him at 74, jason johnson style player, hard running with great skills, came third in the dragons b&f in a team that also had dylan smith etc

only disappointment is that we didnt get guy richards who went to collingwood, probably one of the best ruckman in the draft and we had 3 chances to get him, he also had the chance to develop at essendon

hopefully we will re-draft berbakov in the preseason draft

overall 9/10 considering the picks we had

I don't know why Geelong redrafted two delisted players, especially Daniel Lowther, but i am pleased young Hamish Simpson gets another crack at it. The word is that this years draft was the poorest in years, which is why the Cats traded most of their picks for quality guns in Justin Murphy and Mitchell White. Kent Kingsley could be a surprise packet Geelong could afford to go for experience as we had a shit heap of draft picks last year (Joel Corey for me, will be a star this year, and in fact should win the Norwich rising star award, he's going to be fantastic) Joshua Hunt could also play a few games this year. Overall i'm pleased with Geelong's current playing list and coaching staff, and with luck with injuries, suspensions etc, should be a top 4 contender for the next few years at least. GO CATS in 2001

I wouldn't worry too much Crow54, Angwin seems to be a good player and if Handby turns out alright it should be a good draft for us. I'm just glad we didn't pick up any mature SANFL players as they always seem to be a bust. While some Vic players leave for home, we have picked up Victorian youngsters Johnson and Eccles from past drafts and they've turned out okay.

I am concerned though about Matthew Smith, who the #$%@ is he?? Not even rated a mention in pre draft talk at all. I hope Fantasia isn't up to his old tricks again.

Cheers

CJH, Walshy 93,

If I gave the impression I was disappointed in the quality of players Richmond drafted, then I haven't communicated my message very well. :$

Usually I would agree with the philosophy that clubs should (a) draft the best possible player, (b) and then worry about position.

I am however concerned about the club drafting two Western Australians, especially after losing Merenda to the Eagles (which may not be a bad thing in itself, but does highlight the potential problems of players wanting to go home).

Being from NE Victoria myself, I've heard nothing but good news about Pettifer. I'm glad he was still available at 9.

I'm surprised Sheedy didn't spring a surprise though, given the number of delisted players in the draft. Maybe he'll do something odd in the pre-season draft.

The mob that completely baffled me was Geelong. Why the hell would you draft two blokes who were delisted for not being good enough? That's just ludicrous!!!

Surely, they could have drafted some decent kids with their picks? G4E Please Explain!

Tiger

Ok there is a big difference between west aussies going over their and melbourne players coming over here.
Believe me you have more of a chance at retaining your players than we do
But that said
I did see the interview with coughlan and considering most contracts are about 2 years, as soon as that time is over he will come home.
He was bitterly disapointed and unlike most other kids interivewd about leaving the state, they say that they are excited he said it was going to be tough without the family.
WARNING BELLS should be ringing
Looks like the same as the white incident and the soon to be hedland incident

How can anyone tell how these guys will go in the big league?

History is littered with the bodies of very high draft picks (1-20) who turn out are useless & low picks (21-zillion) who are brilliant.

I say again ask me about 2001 picks in 2004 & I will tell you how they went.

For Tiger Tank's info, Geelong had no plans to originally delist Lowther and Simpson, (they were delisted 2 weeks after the original axings in Arnott, Lindsay, T and P Lynch) but thanks to the AFL's ludicrous rule in reducing player lists to 35 before the draft, the Cats had no choice. Bloody oath, i swear the AFL is pissing me more and more every year. If playing lists get pruned anymore, more clubs will probably get shoved down the gurgler if they suffer massive injuries like Carlton or Richmond suffered this year. It's a joke 38 on a list plus Veteran's. Bloody salary cap rubbish.

tiger tank i actually meant pettifer but im sure u know that

magpie guy you dont have a great deal of footy knowledge do you
collingwood didnt draft twins, they drafted a twin, ryan lonie, his brother went to hawthorn
the most skillful player you got with your third pick was who exactly??? your third pick was lonie
richards will be a great player but not at collingwood, he will be thrown in too early and could really hurt his career, he needs at least 3 years to develop, imagine fraser and richards as coll ruck attack, to skinny teenages, could be a problem

as for this most skillful player in the draft i think u mean didak who you got with your first pick

i think u need to do a bit of reading or something because you are coming across as an unintelligent moron

g4e the afl may be pissing you off more and more, but you are pissing me off more and more, that rule is good, its there to keep list rotating and to enable players who clubs may keep in the reserves for years to have a chance at other clubs
