Kyler Murray says he isn’t hurt after limping off field following Cardinals’ loss

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 29, 2021, 5:02 AM EDT

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray appeared to hurt his ankle late in Thursday night’s loss to the Packers, but he said after the game that he’s fine.

Murray limped off the field following the game, but he told reporters afterward that he would be fine.

“Yeah, I’m good. Guy rolled up on me, but other than that it’s just unfortunate to lose like that,” Murray said.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said after the game that he hadn’t talked to Murray but was “assuming” Murray would be fine because he would have been informed if his quarterback had suffered a significant injury.

It was a brutal Thursday Night Football game filled with injuries on both sides, but Murray appears confident that after three extra days of rest, he’ll be good to go for the Cardinals’ next game, November 7 at San Francisco.

Cardinals not ready to rule out J.J. Watt for the season

Posted by Charean Williams on October 29, 2021, 8:50 PM EDT

Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt tore his biceps, labrum and rotator cuff. He also dislocated his shoulder.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury indicated Thursday that Watt’s immediate future almost assuredly will include surgery.

But Watt and the Cardinals are not ready to concede that the five-time All-Pro’s season is over. General Manager Steve Keim said Friday afternoon that Watt is consulting with specialists.

“I know surgery is an option, but at the same time, I think there are some things that are possibly put in place where we want to play this thing out with a little bit more time and see how he responds,” Keim said on 98.7 Arizona’s Sports Station, via Darren Urban of the team website. “To me, if there is anybody who can bounce back and can do it, it’s J.J. Watt.

“As far as I know, there is a possibility (of return). I don’t want to rule that out yet. I’m not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.”

Watt played only 48 of a possible 80 games over the past five seasons because of injuries.

He signed a two-year, $31 million deal with the Cardinals in the offseason. He has 16 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and 10 quarterback hits in seven games.

The Cardinals have Corey Peters and Rashard Lawrence returning, but Keim said the teams is “always open for business” when asked about the possibility of a trade for defensive line help.

Assistant head coach Jeff Rodgers, running backs coach James Saxon, and assistant offensive line coach Brian Natkin will miss Week 9 due to health protocols.
The Cardinals have been struck by COVID as hard as any team in the league this year, and it has mostly affected the coaching staff. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury missed a couple of games earlier this year, and the Cards will now be down three assistants for their divisional bout against the 49ers in Week 9.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Chase Edmonds suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 9 against the 49ers and could be headed to short-term IR.
Edmonds didn't return to Arizona's Week 9 drubbing of the 49ers after exiting with the ankle injury in the first quarter. It appears to be an injury that will keep Edmonds sidelined for at least a few weeks and turn James Conner into a workhorse and potential league winner. Conner in Week 9 had 21 carries for 96 yards and five receptions for 77 yards, totaling three touchdowns in a dominant performance. He should absorb most, if not all, of Edmonds' passing down work over the next few weeks. Conner goes from a touchdown-reliant RB2 to a weekly RB1 for as long as Edmonds is sidelined. Eno Benjamin, after seeing nine carries for 39 yards and a score against the Niners, should be added this week by RB-needy fantasy managers.

USA Today's Tyler Dragon reports that Kyler Murray's ankle is improving, but the Cardinals are keeping the long term in mind with their star quarterback.
Dragon said Murray hopes to play on Sunday against the Panthers, but it makes sense that the Cardinals are keeping the long view in mind with such a valuable young player. Colt McCoy filled in admirably for Murray against the 49ers and would start against in Week 10 if need be. Fantasy managers will need to monitor this situation throughout the week as it has a massive effect on the Cardinals' offense as a whole.

Chandler Jones to wear cleats honoring Pat Tillman

Posted by Mike Florio on November 14, 2021, 11:47 AM EST

Last week, Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones displayed a T-shirt honoring the late Freddie Joe Nunn. The league didn’t like it, fining Jones $10,300.

This week, Jones plans to wear cleats honoring the late Pat Tillman and supporting the Pat Tillman fund.

As we understand it, Jones will be wearing the cleats not only during pregame warmups but also during the game itself. Which means that Jones will be risking another fine.

Which means, of course, it would have been far cheaper for Jones to simply be unvaccinated and repeatedly and blatantly break COVID protocol.

Interesting theft...

Cardinals signed QB Trace McSorley off the Ravens' practice squad.

McSorley was beaten out for backup duties in Baltimore by Tyler Huntley this offseason. The Ravens waived him and then brought him back to their practice squad. He threw for 90 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts in 2020. McSorley should replace Chris Streveler as the Cardinals' QB3.

Streveler has really struggled when he's been used
McSorley, McCoy, McMurray...are all similar type dual threat smallish QBs. Its a perfect depth chart there. And the Birds doing a nasty on a Bird rival taking away a player from the same type of depth chart. A bit hows your father.

Secure a play-off spot with two games to spare...?

Doesn't feel like cause for a celebration though. Playing awfully.

Are we simply a talent-based team? Hopkins, JJ, Kyler, Conner showing off their individual brilliance at times with others along for the ride. Then when the talent is out injured or in a form blip and we rely on the underlying system - all breaks down.

Seem completely bereft of confidence and direction at present. Have two weeks to find it.

Report: Cardinals agree to terms with Bashaud Breeland

Posted by Charean Williams on December 27, 2021, 6:29 PM EST

The Vikings cut starting cornerback Bashaud Breeland on Dec. 18 after a disagreement in the meeting room spilled over to the practice field. He has remained a free agent since with no known interest.

The Cardinals called, though, and after a workout, Breeland is signing with the team, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.

Breeland started 13 games for the Vikings, and he made 63 tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said earlier in the day the team would need help at the position with Marco Wilson (shoulder) potentially out and Robert Alford (pectoral) on injured reserve.

The Cardinals play the Cowboys on Sunday, and Breeland faced Dallas with the Vikings earlier this season.

In what has become a semi-annual event in the Valley of The Sun, the Cardinals continue to rise to the top of the rankings, then slowly crash back down to reality just before the holiday season. And no, this isn’t a one-year wonder-type connotation.

Does anyone else remember Week 8 of 2020 and the Hail Mary throw heard around the NFL? If DeAndre Hopkins doesn’t make the catch, Arizona loses five straight to finish below .500 … again.

“Kingsbury is overhyped and not a good coach,” an AFC scouting director tells FanSided, laying bare any optimism the Cardinals might turn things around. “[He’s] all hype and no substance.”

This is a trait Kingsbury possesses. Last season, Arizona was 5-2 prior to losing six of nine to close out at .500. A win in Week 17 would have earned them the No. 7 seed. Instead, Mitchell Trubisky has more playoff starts than Kyler Murray.

This season? More of the same.

“Honestly, I think it’s that Kliff has such an easy-going atmosphere in that building,” a league source with ties to the Cardinals tells FanSided. “Hell, leading into Week 1, the first team never practiced or played together at full-speed. Veterans hardly ever practice. There isn’t any structure or discipline there.”

Under Kingsbury, racing off to fast starts but fading when the games matter most is an alarming trend.

“They have just relied on the fact that they have superior talent the past two years,” the source says. “But, when DeAndre Hopkins is out, and other guys start going down, that s**t doesn’t fly in the NFL.”

“With Kyler Murray, a little banged up, no DeAndre Hopkins, no Rondale Moore, it really lessens what defenses have to do to beat them,” the AFC Scouting Director says. “And defensively, losing Watt was just huge. He was really impactful before the injury.

If you take a step back and look at the macro things are trending ok

Worst team in the NFL
Bit better the next year
Mid-table the year after
Into playoffs the year after that

Look at the micro though and all we can see is some awful losses when it counts that makes you question whether the progress we've seen this year is real/sustainable.

Are the last few weeks merely a blip on an overall upward trend? Or are they an indicator that the closer we get to the prize the more our (squad/coach/QB/GM) shortcomings are exposed?

The fear I have is that whatever doubts we as a fan base are feeling would be also felt by those inside the organisation. Kliff, Kyler and co wouldn't be human if they didn't feel them. These doubts lead to poor decision making under pressure.

No one enters the NFL as a proven performer though. No one has won anything meaningful at this level until they have. No one at the Cardinals carries the confidence with them of having been there and done it - Coach, QB, GM. Need to prove to themselves that they can do it. Will make it easier the next time. Continuing to lose these big games though and the monkey on our back only gets bigger.

Much better showing today although the Cardiac Cards still reared their heads a bit.
Run defence was incredible after being such a weakness this year.
I believe we can still end up the 2 seed with a win and losses to the Rams and Bucs.
Otherwise we are back in Kylers house in 2 weeks to do it all again
