Yeah I think he is playing it smart. If he can forge a positive relationship early it will hold him in good stead should his form start to fall or anything. First impressions last and MM (like most coaches) will develop favourites

I don't think it matters for the favourites so much but just getting the best out of your peer group leaders goes a long way in getting everyone pulling together.

Make real leaders of the playing group leadership group and you've gone a long way in making life easier for yourself and better for the whole.
