After reading as many Mock/Phantom Draft and Player Profile posts as I could possibly digest, I decided this year rather than do up an alphabetical list as I have done in past years…I would do something a little different for 2007.

I have fed the information from about 8 different draft experts into a natty little program which has awarded points to each potential draftee. Those with the highest score have been selected before those with lesser appeal. I am not going to name the experts, suffice to say that their views are well published on the web and in hard copy. I have drawn on these experts opinions and added some comments where required. Rather than type up page after page on each potential draftee, I have shortened them to a few lines. I have also concentrated on the top 20, but provide potential draft order and some details for the balance.

The easiest way to use this guide is print it off if you can and simply cross off each player when their name is called. I am fairly sure that those players who will be drafted are covered, but of course there will be some that have got under the radar. Some of these obviously will even miss out altogether.

I hope you all enjoy the morning and above all, I hope WH plucks some stars to don the Navy Blue.

Player Profiles:

1: Carlton: Matthew Kreuzer: Ruck/Fwd) - 13 May 1989, 199.5cm 94kg. Vic Metro/Northern/Bundoora.

The Big K or Special K as he has been dubbed is both that - Big and Special. 200cm Ruckman who can take a big grab after drifting forward, rove his own tap-outs and has speed and stamina to burn to match most smaller players only come along once in a generation. He lays tackles, spoils and bumps and he has great recovery and superb second efforts. Nice clean skills, particularly his hands and good below his knees. Well balanced, rarely fumbles and is very competitive.

He won almost every award available in the TAC cup this year. He won the 2007 Morrish Medal and the Knights b & f. An AIS-AFL Academy graduate. He was an All-Australian after the 2007 U18 Champs and was voted Vic Metro's most valuable player. He displayed exceptional endurance at the Draft Camp where he recorded top 10 results in the both the beep test (14.2) and the 3km time trial (10min 51sec).
Carlton ruck stocks are low with only 2 gamer Shaun Hampson and the younger Irish lad looking like future palmers. They traded Josh Kennedy to West Coast in the Judd deal and retired Lance Whitnall, so the loss of 2 talls should see them name Kreuzer.

Listen for Player number 114064 to be read out first. Kreuzer is the standout tall in this year's draft and looks a 10-year prospect. He would become Carlton's third consecutive No.1 draft pick, joining Marc Murphy (2005) and Bryce Gibbs (2006).

2: Richmond: Trent Cotchin: HFF/Mid - 7 April 1990, 185cm 81kg. Vic Metro/Northern/PEGS

A number of astute recruiters liken this lad to a Nathan Brown or Garry Ablett with his tricky, silky skills. He may develop into a genuine midfielder over time but looks like a flanker ATM to me. Cotchin is excellent swooping on the loose ball. He reads the play very well. Gets off the mark and reacts quickly, although not lightening fast. Reasonable kick for goal. He is two sided like Akka which gives him the opportunity to burst out of packs and befuddle his opponents. He is renowned as a pick pocket that strips the pill of unsuspecting opponents. One respected recruiter said “He could run through a pack and come out with their wallets”. Defense isn’t regarded as a big part of his armory, however offensively he is a gun. He did dominate with 37 touches in Northern’s 1st qualifying final against Gippsland. Trent is just 17 and is only just eligible for this year's draft by a few days.

If the Blues pick Kreuzer, then Richmond should make Cotchin a Tiger. The squeeze is on Greg Miller and his mob to pluck a goodun from this draft and with Cotchin they couldn’t go wrong. Remember they took Tambling over Franklin a couple of years back, but there is a shortage of those type of talls in this draft so they have the pick of smalls.

He has already been on the track at Tigerland du to the AIS-AFL Academy program and Richmond Coach Terry Wallace is supposed to be a big fan. When Mitch Morton was traded to Richmond it was speculated that his younger brother Cale would be picked by Richmond, but we expect they will opt for the Victorian instead.

3: West Coast: Chris Masten: Rover - 2 May 1989, 180cm 78kg. WA/East Fremantle

I am going against the trend here, because if Richmond do take Cotchin, you would expect the Eagles to grab Morton, but I reckon they are looking for a Judd replacement. That means Chris Masten who is a huge Eagles fan will not be packing his bags to head over east. Masten is actually too good for West Coast to pass up. He wins plenty of the red thing in the clinches by putting his head over it and uses it very well by bringing his teammates into the game. He got the pill on a plate from the big burger on legs last year, but this year he just went and got it himself and made other look good, particularly Rhys Palmer. He is a first class extractor with an excellent work-rate and attacks at all costs. He is actually a relative of their Recruiting Manager, so should see him in blue and gold. Incidentally he recorded a beep test of more than 15 with the AIS-AFL Academy. He was an All-Australian selection at the 2007 AFL U18 Championships where he averaged 25 possies per game and was ranked 3rd for clearances.

4: Melbourne: Cale Morton: Wing/HBF - 18 January 1990, 191.5cm 78kg. WA/Claremont

Recruiters watched with amazement as this kid strode the Champs stage with his elegance and a superb usage of the ball. He has fantastic stamina and strides out to cover plenty of territory leaving opponents in his wake. Although regarded as more of an outside receiver who doesn't win his own ball, he could turn out an excellent back flanker in the AFL who will run the lines setting up many attacks. He can kick a long way and very accurately too. If he gets anywhere near the sticks will have a ping. He would be suited to Victorian conditions based on his showing as a wet-weather nob at the Champs. Someone compared him to Craig Bradley derogatively saying he was just a front running show-pony. Most clubs would kill for a Braddles with the way the game is going now where it is becoming more and more uncontested.

Melbourne will be delighted that Morton could slip to pick 4, considering most recruiting managers regard him as one of the best in this draft. If the top 3 already named pan out this way then the Demons will gleefully grab Morton who boasts a fine pedigree as the youngest brother of Mitch at Richmond and Jarryd at Hawthorn. AA who won the Larke medal at the Champs.

5: Bulldogs: Lachlan Henderson: Key Fwd/Ruck) - 18 December 1989, 196cm 91kg. Vic Country/Geelong

Another outside the square selection here. The doggies are desperate for some tall timber in their front half, so expect them to pass up the opportunity to grab more runners. They have more of them than they can handle but no targets in the forward line. Hendo is good on the lead, very strong and a superb pack mark. He was a star of last years Under age finals series, but missed this years Champs due to injury. Scott Clayton will not have missed him. Not regarded as a big kick, but accurate and he will take most of his chances in the square area. He will get silver service from the Bullies on ball brigade. Geelong’s Michael Turner compares him to Matthew Pavlich. He showed great endurance at the AFL Draft Camp with a shuttle run of 13.8. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

6: Essendon: Rhys Palmer: Centre/Wing - 13 February 1989, 181cm 79kg. WA/East Fremantle

Blondie was one of the stars of the Champs. He wouldn’t have been in too many recruiters calculations for a top 10 selection, but he has jumped up about 10 rungs since. Admittedly he did get great service from his best mate Chris Masten, but geez he uses it so well. His work-rate is exceptional and he loves a sausage roll and he kicks plenty of them from midfield. His left foot is dynamic. He just didn’t seem to have a man during the carnival. He did go get it on a couple of occasions and laid a couple of beaut tackles. He has that annoying habit of celebrating when he snares one, but at least he doesn’t do backflips. He is top aged and has improved heaps in 1 season but he will have to learn defense if he is going to emulate his efforts on the big stage.

He was the leading possession earner at the recent AFL U18 Champs, where he averaged 32 per game. He was named in the undefeated Western Australian team as Most Valuable Player as well as earning AA honors. If he becomes a Bomber, the no nonsense Matthew Knights will teach him accountability. Essendon need a runner of this ilk though as they were found wanting for speed and gut busting runners at the business end of this season. Palmer will slot right in at Windy Hill.

7: Fremantle: Alex Rance: Key Defender - 9 October 1989, 194cm 87kg. WA/Swan Districts

Alex is the son of former Footscray and West Coast player Murray. He was one of the best rebounding defenders in the WA U-18 team this year. The Dockers are on the hunt for a quality tall defender. Rance fits the bill because he can carry the pill out of the back half, kicks well, switches play and leads by example. He will be an excellent Full Back at AFL level. Possess pretty good speed too. He averaged 17 possessions at the 2007 AFL U18 Champs. He was also named AA.

8: Brisbane: Brad Ebert: Centre/HBF - 2 April 1990, 187cm 86kg. SA/Port Magpies/Henley

From the famous South Australian Ebert family, Brad is a cousin to the current Port player. The Brisbane Lions will be delighted to snare an Ebert before the Croweaters get a look in. May be one of a select few South Aussie boys drafted this year and was their only AA. He wins the red thing repeatedly and brings his team mates into the game. Leads by example with neat skills. Gets down and dirty but can scoot away when required. Takes a fair grab for a medium as well. Will be very surprised if he doesn’t go top 10.

9: St. Kilda: Ben McEvoy: Ruck/Fwd - 11 July 1989, 199cm 90kg. Vic Country/Murray/Dederang-Mt Beauty

Best and Fairest for grand finalists Murray Bushrangers after an impressing 2007 TAC Cup season, McEvoy is a little down on height for a ruckman but averaged 14 hit-outs and 8 marks per game. There are debates as to whether he’s best suited to rucking or ranging around the forward line and whether he’ll excel at either due to pace questions. Led the competition in contested marks and good off the boot, so no debating he has the potential to be a handy spare up front or down back. Saints need a fresh face in their rucking department. Big Ben could just be the one for them.

10: Adelaide: Jarrad Grant: Tall forward, July 6 1989, 192cm, 77kg. VIC Metro/Dandenong Stingrays.

A sensationally mobile tall forward, Grant kicked 27 goals in 8 games for Dandenong in the TAC Cup and sprinted 20m in 2.89 seconds at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft Camp to snag a possie in the top 5 per cent. Strong in the air and a genuine goal kicker, will he turn out to be a superstar, or will he just razzle dazzle for two token appearances per match like the Scarlett Pimpernel, aka Ryan Houlihan? Adelaide is likely to hope for the former and will be hard pressed to pass him up in vain hopes of him hanging around till their next pick.

11: Sydney: David Myers: HBF - 30 June 1989, 190cm 85kg. WA/Perth

A running defender with enough dexterity to play in the midfield, Myers carries the ball well and has excellent foot skills off his left side. He appears to have a mature head on his shoulders and a bit of Zen that should stand him well under pressure in the defensive 50. Myers should fill at least one hole as a 3rd defender in the Swans' light-on backline where he should become a specialist kicker in their backline.

12: Hawthorn: Cyril Rioli: Rover/Wing/Small Fwd) - 14 July 1989, 178cm 74kg. NT/St Mary's

He is very slick, great in the clinches and a dynamo around goals. Pelchen will swoop if Junior is still available. He will have seen plenty of him in Melbourne where he has been playing school footy on a scholarship. Cyril should adjust quicker to AFL tempo than most of the indigenous country boys. Bred in the purple, being a nephew of Maurice Rioli and Michael Long. Junior is a left-footer who possesses silky skills and supreme balance. He has struggled with injury and never been at full fitness. We will not slip past the brown and gold if he makes it this far. If Sheeds was still at Windy Hill, he would go at Pick 6.

13: West Coast: Tayte Pears: Key Defender - 24 March 1990, 191cm 92kg. WA/East Perth

The Eagles will pounce considering that Rance should be gone before now. They will be wishing to add another tall defender and Tayte fits the bill. Although they have Glass and Hunter there is not as much depth there as first thought. Did well at CHB for WA at the Champs, but could be a natural FB. Tayte is a bottom aged lad who will improve in an AFL environment. Did a 2.92 seconds over 20 meters at DC.

14: Melbourne: David Gourdis: Key Fwd - 24 November 1989, 193cm 89kg. WA/Subiaco

Gourdis is a very impressive CHF who presents well and covers a lot of turf, but is known for being able to pick it up off the deck as well. Excellent shot for goal. Usually gets up the ground a bit which should suit the Dees who are looking to replace the aging David Neitz. He is one the best key position players in the draft. He has a huge motor is well proportioned. He actually crashes packs, but will need to learn different skills if he lands at the Junction Oval. David had a great DC where he equaled the best 20m sprint time and eclipsed the vertical leap record. He could even go earlier to the Crows instead of Grant.

15: Kangaroos: Jack Grimes: Ruck Rover/HBF) - 11 May 1989, 187cm 76kg. Vic Metro/Northern/Hurstbridge

Captain of the Northern Knights TAC Cup team and hard at the ball, Grimes could be just what the Kangas need as an apprentice to putty up one small edge of the tough-nut leadership hole that the retirement of champ Archer will leave behind. That said, no-one seriously expects anyone to fill those boots but Grimes never lets up on his efforts and in time, should prove to be a solid and reliable team man to be counted on. Jack is a medium defender/midfielder with excellent stamina who’ll probably take well to beach training and Reef oil. The Kangas should grab him with both hands.

16: Port Adel: Tom Collier: Key Defender/Ruck Rover - 25 March 1989, 192cm 86kg. Tasmania/Lauderdale

Collier is touted for versatility, being a big athletic young bloke who can play on ball and carry on like a midfielder. He missed out last year but has improved in leaps and bounds. He is a bit too one sided for mine though. I wouldn’t recommend letting him loose in a china shop just yet, but he was ranked fourth overall in agility testing in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft Camp so has big potential as he gains experience. Port needs a key defender who’s not going to stand around waiting for the ball and the big Taswegian will do the job for them. This would release Cornes to play more in the midfield.

17: Geelong: Patrick Dangerfield: BP/Centre - 5 April 1990, 187cm 82kg. Vic Country/Geelong/Anglesea

Only 17 and could have had another season at TAC level, but after stellar performances, has nominated for this draft. He won’t last too long because most sides are on the lookout for back pockets who can look after the nippy forwards. The premiers will be very happy if they get to select this local lad to add to their already miserly defense. We should develop into a good mid with time and patience as he is real blue collar in his efforts and can certainly win the pill. I can see him already barging through the middle of Skilled Stadium with the red thing under his arm at express speed. They are very well schooled at the Falcons and that’s why the Cats like to get their local boys in the blue and white hoops. He is another who just might not last till this pick.

18: Richmond: Steve Gaetner: Wing/HBF/Def - 2 January 1990, 196cm 83kg. Vic Metro/Dandenong/Edithvale

This selection is the Tigers Priority pick after they won the wooden spoon this year. Considering they are going to snare a beauty in Cotchin or Morton with their first selection, they will want to capitalize on this free pick. Whilst Gaetner is a real athlete who will need time and patience to show his best, he is a big boy at 196cm. He really motors and has an impressive jump on him. He might be considered a project player by some recruiters, but with Greg Miller and Terry Wallace they will see this is the prototype player they have been searching for. I’m told they think he could be the Jarrad Brennan they missed out on in the Trading period.

19: Bulldogs: Patrick Veszpremi: Rover/BP/FP - 1 September 1989, 181cm 843kg. Vic Metro/Northern/Bundoora

Built like a country brick thunderbox! Vez is a very aggressive animal when he crosses that white line. He just charges off without regard for life or limb. Is not the quickest of recruits, but he will give his new club his all. I suspect that he will have his body shape adjusted to pick up some pace, but without risking his grunt. He might be found wanting in the midfield at AFL level, but will make an excellent flanker anyway. He missed this years Champs due to a broken thumb, but was AA last year as a bottom aged kid. If the Bullies pick up the tall they need with their pick 5, then they might think that Vez could replace Westy long term.

20: West Coast: Scott Selwood: HBF/Rover) - 27 March 1990, 184cm 81kg. Vic Country/Bendigo/Sandhurst

Bookies would be on almost even odds that the Weagles will want a matching bookend for older brother, Adam. Maybe they can be touted as their ‘Family Values’ poster boys. Not much subtlety about young Scott – ploughs through packs first and doesn’t stop to ask questions later – but he’d make a nice counter balance to the (albeit-depleted) mosquito fleet of the West Coast midfield and has surprisingly clean hands and adept ability to read the ball.

21: Melbourne: Callan Ward: Defender/midfielder - 185cm, 73kg. Western Jets

22: West Coast: Paddy McGinnity: Rov/HBF/BP - 18 February 1989, 182cm 75kg. WA/Claremont

23: Essendon: Brendan Whitecross: HBF/Wing) - 25 January 1990, 182cm 79kg. Queensland/Zillmere
