Do we think Armitage will get more of a go in 2009? Looks to be a good player, capable of being a star eventually (as opposed to Jones and Eddy, who seem to be just making the most of a more limited potential). With Ray and possibly Cousins going into our midfield (or in Ray's case, across half back to get BJ and Gram into the midfield), is Armitage going to be playing a lot of VFL next year?
 
I think Armitage suffers due to his similarities to Lenny and Bally rather than for his inadequacies. He will expand his repertoire with time and I think he will become an essential player.

We've been crying out for in and under players...when the blokes staring at us in the face.

He had more tackles than possessions in the Prelim, in like 50% game time. He's the kinda player we need, a lot of ferociousness and mongrel about him. He's shown signs with 20 touches against Essendon early on this year, and likes to sneak forward for a goal, with nearly a goal a game.

No idea where he's going to play, but hell, give him a spot over McQualter, Eddy and FFS Fiora! Fiora's not in our future, Armo most certainly is.

FWIW, I'm gettin on him for the Brownlow next year.

He has done a mini "apprenticeship" and is ready to go!
Round 1 he will be there dominating in the midfield, mark my words!

I hope so too, but Eddy, Fiora, Jones, McQualter and now possibly Ray and hopefully Cousins have/will be picked ahead of him. Does Ross not rate him?

Lets not write cheques we can't cash just yet.

Has def shown signs and I think will be a gun. The finals experience will no doubt give him something to learn from. But we have put so many expectations on this bloke. Just let him develop. As the year progressed he tired which is what happens to young blokes. Consistency is a hard thing to find. Look at Raph. Hopefully Armo can get a full pre-season both cardio wise and strength wise. He still has a lot of filling out to do if he's going to smash someone like Sewell (which he will!) in the future.

Hopefully X and Armo can have a great summer. Both on HFF running through the middle to give BJ and Ball rests is what we should hope for.

Sh#t I wish round one would hurry up!
 
I'm a huge cricket fan, so footy being a while away doesn't bother me all that much. Hope the boys are working their arses off while i watch grass grow :D. Armo seems like a potiential ball magnet to me, he's getting 50-60% game time and he's racking up 15 touches or so. Looking very good to me

Ball magnet? he averaged 10.2 disposals in 2008. I agree he's hard at it, but he needs to get hold of the pill much more than he's been doing so to be regarded as a 'ball magnet'. And his ball use is OK at best.

The kid has a fair bit of work in front of him. Fortunately, RL seems to give the kids enough time to develop, so we'll see how he goes next year, but I'm not regarding him as a potential 'gun' until I see it on the ground, and frankly, I'm yet to see that.
 
There is a lot of exageration and wishful thinking in this thread.

Now firstly, yes Armo has shown in flashes that he has ability and could be an ok player for us, and maybe even a good one.

However over his 13 games in 2008 he only averaged 10 disposals, which for player often playing midfield (even allowing for lower TOG) is simply notebough of the ball.

Sometimes you watch him and see yes some real class. Impoartnatly too unlike may of our mids he knows how to snag goals. But at other times you suddenly realise that he has done very little for a big slab of time. We already have too many players at the Saints who play well in bursts, but who go missing too often. What he, and a few others need to do, is to play at or near their best more odten.

He is however young and so lots of time to improve yet. However for one of his hype he is a bit behind where he should be. Rumours abound that his attititide in his first year was very poor., and still was lacking in year two.

Lets hope in 2009 that he gets fully focussed and committed and starts to deliver more.

David Armitage has the fifth highest goal/disposal in the Saints, and the highest of any of our midfielders.:thumbsu: He has probably made more tackles per game than anyone apart from Ball and Hayes and his tackles look good. :thumbsu: Already I think he is a better player than Charlie Gardiner, Gwilt, and Fiora and at a similar level to Shane Birss, but quicker.

Jones and Eddy were super all year. You cant say those things about those players and neither of them have to come out for Armo any way.

Good stats there.
The "flashes" of a good player is exactly what I want to be seeing from Armitage at this point. He only just turned 20, so there is plenty of time to start turning these flahes into more consistent performances. The kid certainly shows a lot of natural ability which hopefully can be developed.
 
Don't forget Ross Lyon is playing Armo in the forward line a lot of the time. That's why he seems to be an in and under player who doesn't get a lot of the pill and one that kicks a lot of goals. I reckon he'll be another Lenny Hayes type of player, hopefully just as good
 
I'm not saying he's not going to be a good player. I'm saying he's not one yet. There's plenty of folks calling him a gun already; he's not.

I think he'll end up a pretty good player, but he's got a long way to go yet. He's just finished his second season. We'll know more after next year, and the year after.

If you want a kid who is a gun, look at Rhys Palmer, or Joel Selwood. Armo is nowhere near their standard.

And I think that yours are colored by higly misleading use of stats!!! Not to mention not actually comparing second years at all as number of stats you used were from the other players first years.

Lenny Hayes 1999 average 11 disp. 2nd year 15.4
Nick Dal Santo 2002 average 11 disp. 2nd year 19.0
Nick Reiwold 2001 average 9.5 disp. 2nd year 14.5
Jason Gram 2005 average 9 disp. That was his third year...and yes developed slowly
Leigh Montagna 2003 average 10.4 Yes was his second year..but was not a low draft pick
Brendon Goddard 2003 average 13. !! Was 12.6 in his second year...but mainly played as a defender...not a mid.
Shane Birss 2002 average 10.4. 2nd year 10.5...but yes a case in point...Armo needs to do better than Birrs we would hope.
Jason Blake 2001 average 10. Yes was his first year. But was not a mid...and has been a GOP throughout his career. Again I would hope more for Armo.

So using YOUR listed players..Armitage who had his SECOND year at the club this year is clearly behind the stats for the better players....or where given the wraps and draft position you would hope Armo would be.

YES his stats are back with the "average" players.....or players such as BJ who was mainly playing as a defender.


As I have said Armo has demonstrated talent. What he now needs to do is to show it more often amd more consistently.
 
Stfan, all I did was compare the Stats from the first year, where the player got a significant number of games to get some averages. Armo had three games last year and I don't count that as significant, just as I don't read anything into MacEvoy's one game this year. The Nick Reiwoldt (6 ) games would be the minimum I would count to get reasonable stats.
I believe that next year his stats will be similar to those player's second year.

You have brushed aside the fact that his TOG was extremely limited.

It has been stated that his goals were due to him being used as a forward. So for some of his limited time he has been used as a forward, and managed to kick more goals than anyone else in the area apart from Reiwoldt, Kosi, Milne, Schneider. What were our other forwards doing?
Why has he recorded more tackles per game than others who enjoyed maximum TOG who are supposed to be taggers?

My opinion is that he has serious talent and will be among the best 22 next year and that the team will be better for it.
A lot of others seem to think he is pretty good as well.

For a coach like Ross Lyon that's a huge deal. I believe RL's philosophy is along the lines of only the players that are willing to get the absolute best out of themselves will get games.

That's why players like Jones, Eddy, Fiora have gotten lots of opportunities this year whilst guys like Armitage and Birss who have looked better, haven't.

That's just my opinion

This is a catch 22 in that it leads to some mediocre players getting games when they shouldn't but contrastingly forces a player like Raph Clarke to work harder than ever to force his way into the team and also makes him a better player.

Fair enough, as it's your opinion. But I remember Channel 10 tracked him one game this year. He ran 8.6ks in 49% game time. I thought that wasn't too bad...compared to others who'd only ran a couple more k's in nearly a full game.

It's either his attitude, or his fitness. And attitude probably ties in with him not working hard enough I guess.

Either way, I have faith!

And you may be right in the end. I certainly hope so. But as for now, he's just a player. He's not done nearly enough to be an automatic first 22 player yet. Let's hope he has a break out year in 2009.
 
Hey guys.

Just cruising through other team's boards, and I thought of Armitage and McEvoy; how are they coming along, and are they gonna make it?

I rate them both (especially McEvoy), and was wondering if they're seen as your great white knights...?

Is there any doubts on either, i.e. McEvoy's height to be an elite ruck etc etc etc...
