A general rule of thumb for me is to not be too harsh on a player until they have played 50 games, that is when their official apprenticeship is over, then you can start to critique them all you want. As with Armstrong I thought he was finished after his first 2 games, he was absolutely garbage and looked completely out of his depth. But to his credit he is slowly improving, imagine what he will be like after 20 or 30 games under his belt.

When you trade or pick a player in the draft, I think you should back your judgement and allow them to play a good 12 or 15 games to see if they show potential, if they do then persevere some more. As long as you don't have too many passengers at once, surely you can carry 1 or 2 players along until they reach 50 games.

Ok, CrowMo... I appreciate you have a different view. However, if you should watch the game again... watch his lack of attack when the ball is near him. Watch him run almost backwards. Then, re-read what I wrote when I said "His last quarter, however, he played with more intensity I thought, and had a few redeeming moments."

To me he looked like a "deer in headlights" for much of the night.

pull your head in.

Jenny - Think you were way too harsh. Watching the replay for third time (!) I really liked his decision-making and especially foot-passing skills. Agreed, did have a couple of bad moments with fumbles, but really liked what I saw.

Watched the replay after seeing it live and gotta say it was a fair effort to notice the couple of indecisive attacks on the footy.

Very harsh IMO but he definitely had a few moments he needs to sharpen up on.

The world is a very strange place. A thread dominated by people slamming Jenny for being too harsh. WTF???

I thought Armstrong was reasonable and has been a pleasant surprise so far this season. When Jenny comes out and says hes no good, he must be deplorable.;)

When he has space u have plenty of confidence in his ability to hit a target... which is a great start and why I would have him in my team ahead of Cook any day. He's even good when under reasonable pressure.

For anyone out there who considers themselves a personal trainer able to add strength and weight to even the slightest of frames.... Here is your ultimate test... I've seen runway models with more beef on their torso than Armstrong.

Really Really like him... but with others coming off injury rightly will rightly be under pressure to keep his spot. If he can add a bit of power and work rate to his game has got the attributes.

It wasn't his decision making or foot skills I was talking about. It was his inability (it seemed to me in any case ) to get into a contest. It was like he was standing back or a good few metres behind his man on more than a couple of occasions.

I'm not upset with people telling me I was too harsh, or hasty, in my thoughts about Armstrong, afterall I actually asked the question in the OP. I appreciate your opinion and thank you for not attempting to publicly humiliate me.

gee cant anybody remember his first real game hell im not sure now either ,but i think it was in alice in the wet.now he showed some real potential, was proberly 1st or second best for the night, now i no it was just a scratch match but it was enough for me .dont worry about t. armstrong hes got it.

No worries - I admit I often disagree with your comments, but you do promote lively debate!
Too many posters (imo) play the man, not the topic...

I thought he really struggled with the pace of the game tonight. His first 3 quarters it looked like he was running on the spot and certainly not committing to any contests. His last quarter, however, he played with more intensity I thought, and had a few redeeming moments.

I'm just not sure he is going to make it at this level. Is that too harsh a judgment at this early stage?
Agreed jenny.

does not have the strength to win another 1+1 contests and on occassions hears foot steps

needs more kg's on his frame and hopefully with that we will see more confidence and a stronger attack on the ball and or ball carrier

no strength, way too skinny, and not particularly quick...meaning, he can't take players on, he can't/shouldn't try to break tackles (because he'll just get caught), and he can't tackle players very well. still seems far from AFL standards (strength/size)...and i'm thinking Schmidt (who i don't rate that highly anyway) would be a better replacement while McLeod is recovering.
if he is McLeod's replacement, we really need McLeod to play on next year.

When he's tackled it's like watching mini-Griffin. No attempt to get rid of the footy.

I think I know the incident from the game you are talking about and he did the right thing by holding it in. It's called ball security. Sometimes being caught is better than just letting the ball go free and letting the other team run away with it, when you give away the free for holding the ball at least you can hold up play for a good 5 seconds and let your team mates get back and man up.
