Fer sure.
Frawley isn't the difference between a premiership and losing, despite how well he played today. They would just have another well-drilled 'soldier' in his place instead.
Scary to look at next season. Honestly don't know where their next challenger comes from...

Without looking at the stats I thought Rioli and Smith were the two best players today.

Hawks wouldn't be any worse without FA. But imo without expansion teams, the rest of the competition would be better.

The Hawks showed today why they are the best team bar none. Hard working til the very end. Well lead by both Coach and Captain, as well as others. Absolutely dominated at the G today, and absolutely deserved to go back to back to back. I keep saying it but I can't wait for us to be this great again. What a buzz it was today!! Congrats Hawks! I thought Geelong were the best team I'd seen, but the Hawks took that place today. Brilliant stuff! Well done to Ratts too! Getting the arse from us was probably the best thing to happen to you. Enjoy!

I want what she's smokin'..........

What makes you think he didn't and it was hushed up?

Depends on which rumour you believe. Let me rephrase. Do we think Franklin would be missing finals if he stayed at Hawthorn?

ODN funny that Franklin's name has been brought up but I think down the track he will regret leaving the Hawks. The Hawks haven't missed him one iota. I said in an earlier post about Shoenmakers playing a good match, he was solid for four quarters and I think the players made sure he kicked a goal.

I don't care how anyone tries to rationalise it there is no way the Hawks aren't doing some creative accounting. There is even talk today that they will bring in another free agent.

And FMD, their fans are going to be unbearable all year.

The quantum of the salary cap, with its increasing increments each season, means those teams at the top can bump up contracts to their stars, with natural attrition also creating space in the cap to bring in FAs or experienced players from other clubs. No longer do you see a situation like we saw with Essendope post 2000, when they had to squeeze out some quality players to stay within the salary cap, or the situation at our club (which I won't go over again).

On the flipside, teams who are not challenging for premierships now have to pay a minimum of 95% of the salary cap, leaving little wriggle room should some of their better players want to chase success at the Hawthorns, Geelongs & Sydneys of this world.

The AFL has got itself into a situation now much like that of the 1980s, with success being confined to a small proportion of the clubs (7 of the last 9 premierships have been won by Hawthorn or Geelong, with at least one of those teams participating in every GF since 2007) & a number of clubs struggling financially. Of course back then the VFL invited the West Coast Eagles & Brisbane into the competition, with their licence fees being utilised to help bail out the struggling clubs & at the same time introduced the draft & the salary cap to even out the competition.

Subsequent changes by the AFL, along with a recent propensity to turn a blind eye to the actions of some clubs, has significantly watered down the impact of both the salary cap & the draft, resulting in a sameness about those playing off for premierships. Yes there have been some outriders along the way, but they have not experienced the sustained period near the top end of the ladder to enable success to be achieved e.g. Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Port Adelaide.

The AFL needs to step back from the record broadcasting agreements & record club memberships & realise such numbers are being achieved despite the inbalance in the competition, mostly on the back of the growth in membership numbers at the successful clubs & the blind loyalty of supporters of a handful of other clubs. The AFL is very much in danger of losing a number of its long standing member clubs if they don't act sooner rather than later (even our club is starting to show signs similar to those of another inner suburban club that went by the wayside).

Well Hale retired, and likely to delist Brian Lake, that's at least another 600 K off their cap.
You would have to assume club greats like Hodge and Mitchell have stayed on Hawthorn for 'unders' to ensure the Hawks premiership window remains open, and are possibly likely to be rewarded after they retire, with decent business opportunities from an Ian Dicker type. Suspect something similar will happen with Dangerfield and Frank Costa's Emporium down in Geelong.

There really isn't anything the AFL can do about these kind of deals, its sneaky and manipulative, but technically not a rort.

Pies have something similar lined up for Treloar apparently.

Can't believe how bad West Coast were yesterday. I don't even feel like Hawthorn played that well, they didn't have to. They pretty much just sat back waiting for their stupid mistake....and they came in numbers. They should have been 3 or 4 goals up in the 1st, they lost the 2nd quarter, but they should have been right back in it in the 3rd. They just blew it time and time again. It was really disappointing really....wrecked what is usually a great day of footy.

WC were in that match for 6 or 7 minutes after half-time. The End.
Yeah they did well to get within 24 points and then it fell to pieces - Shuey, I think was running in towards goal and kicks it to the sole Hawk defender, instead of using his team mates around him was a bad mistake. And then a minute later, Rioli with a Cripp's like lighting handpass and then a precision kick from Puopolo to a running Gunston for goal knocked the stuffing out of them.
