I watched the first three episodes when it was first on and never really liked it so stopped watching it.

Have started to watch them all this week (up to s1e13) and have to say it is pretty funny. Dont know if its the funniest show ever like many on here do, but I do now see what some of the fuss was about.

Lucille: [the family is waiting for news on Buster from a very literal doctor] How's my son?
Doctor: He's going to be all right.
Lindsay Funke: Finally some good news from this guy.
George Michael Bluth: There's no other way to take that.
Doctor: That's a great attitude. I got to tell you, if I was getting this news, I don't know that I'd take it this well.
Lucille: But you said he was all right.
Doctor: Yes, he's lost his left hand. So he's going to be "all right."
Lucille: [Jumping on the doctor] You son of a bitch. I hate this doctor.
Lindsay Funke: How do we keep getting this guy?
Michael: Mom, he's a very literal man.
Doctor: Yes, that's more the way I would take the news.

XXXX

Lindsay: You haven't had a serious relationship since your wife, and you guys weren't even speaking towards the end.

Michael: A lot of that was the coma.

Lindsay: Yeah, I've heard your side of it.

Tobias: I should call the Hot Cops and tell them to dress up as something more nautically themed. Hot sailors, maybe. Or better yet, hot sea—
Michael: I like hot sailors.
Tobias: Mmmm. Me too.

Michael: Can't a guy call his mother pretty without it seeming strange?
Buster: Amen. And how about that little piece of tail on her? Cute!
Michael: I've opened a door here that I regret.
Lucille: Oh, he's just talking about his stupid turtle.
Buster: She has a name, Mother, and it's Mother.

Lindsay: You know, Mom, I think the only time you ever cooked for us was the morning Rosa's Mom died.
Buster: You gave us cereal in an ashtray.

The best thing about AD is that some of the funnier things are hard to describe. An example is when Michael, Barry, Wayne Jarvis and his associate are sitting around a table and they all exchange looks. The look Barry gives the asian guy and his reaction are hilarious.

I also love the running jokes such as:

"Marry me!"

"Her?"

"Hey Brother/uncle" etc. (followed by backrub)

The Bluth Chicken impressions

Gob's final countdown act

"And that's why you never..."

Oh man the scene where they all do there own impressions of a chicken is an absolute classic

Michael: Has anybody in this family even seen a chicken

Running gags - I love it when they say "The OC"

"Don't call it that"

Michael: Are you serious?
Wayne Jarvis
: Almost always. I was once voted the worst audience participant Cirque Du Soleil ever had.

:D

Lucille: You idiots! If your father sees me here with Wayne...
Michael: ...we'll be stuck with Barry!
Wayne Jarvis: I shall hide behind that garbage car.
[and does just that]
Michael: Guy's a pro.

Michael: There's a big bowl of candy in my office, why don't you go eat it?
[Lucille enters and while the door is closing]
Wayne Jarvis: Wayne Jarvis, attorney at law. I have a responsibility to tell you that there is *no* candy in this office.

George Michael: Oh, wow. Hey, can I bring Ann?
Michael: Who?
George Michael: Ann. You know, she’s... She’s the girl I’m kind of hanging out with..
Michael: I haven’t met Ann.
George Michael: Yes, you have.

**Narrator: Michael had met Ann.**

George Michael: You let her in. See, that’s ... That’s her right over there.
Michael: Oh, Ann. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I know Ann. Hey, you! She’s got a little hard-boiled egg going there?
George Michael: Oh, it’s so cute. She sometimes takes a little pack of mayonnaise, and she’ll squirt it in her mouth all over, and then she’ll take an egg and kind of... Mmmm! She calls it a “mayonegg.” Are you okay?
The look on Michaels face there is an absolute classic.

  • Maeby: Ok. So, I printed the fake airline ticket from my computer. If my parents miss this, I really might go to South America.
    George Michael: That says Portugal.
    Maeby: That's right.

  • Narrator: Maeby's parents didn't find the ticket. But Gob did...
    Gob: Portugal?
    Narrator: ...Which confirmed his suspicions.
Gob: Gonna live it up down old South America way, huh Mikey?

G.O.B.: You want us for Use Your Illusion?

Tony Wonder: Actually, some band has got the rights to that title, so I’m thinking like Use Your Illusion 2.

I wonder how many people got that joke. I thought it was hilarious.

Yeah there are so many jokes that you don't see until a second or third viewing. It's why if they ever do the movie I'll definitely be seeing it twice.

There's one scene, I forget which episode, but it basically has Tobias talking about how TV shows have incredibly detailed props, he then opens a cupboard and reveals nothing but a starbucks cup. George Michael opens another cupboard and there's just a protein bar. It flew right past me the first time.

Gob's Wife: I'm in love with your brother-in-law.
Gob: You're in love with your own brother? The one in the army?
Gob's Wife: No, your sister's husband.
Gob: Michael? Michael!
Gob's Wife: No, that's your sister's brother.
Gob: No, I'm my sister's brother. You're in love with me - me.
Gob's Wife: I'm in love with Tobias.
Gob: My brother-in-law?
Gob's Wife: I know it can never be, so I'm leaving. I'm enlisting in the army.
Gob: To be with your brother ...
Gob's Wife: No!

Gob: That's me your honour, i ****ed my wife!

It was pretty lame for AD standards actually, not their typical subtlety at all. In fact the punchline for that gag could not have been more obvious, you'd have to be deaf not to get it.

Considering you'd have to have a pretty sound knowledge of Guns N' Roses albums to get the joke, it is very subtle.

Lucille (to the hot cops): You boys know how to shovel coal?
Narrator: I dont even want to tell you what they thought that meant

sound knowledge?
If you had a pulse in the early 90s and your senses of sight and sound were working, the gag would have been obvious.
You would need to know very little about GNR to realise they bought out a 2 part double album.

Depends how old you are.

If you're a Gen-Xer it's a pretty straightforward pop culture reference. If you're Gen-Y it's probably a little more subtle - in reality, if you're born in the mid-80s or later you probably know very little about GNR unless you're specifically into that sort of pre-grunge rock/metal scene.
