in one of my rant posts on the AFC board I mentioned that I felt sorry for Bryce Gibbs having the prospect of going to Carlton and would prefer to see him go to a good club like Essendon.

However I would be interested to know if people rate Essendon over Carlton as a club, I don't just mean in terms of permierships I mean culture, Supporters, player development etc etc

so which club would you consider better Carlton or Essendon ?

The Blues have a much younger and more naturally talented list that the Crows. Gibbs will fit in quite nicely. The Crows will have to again rely on excellent physical preparation, sport-science techniques and an ultra-defensive game-plan to combat their natural talent deficiencies, that inevitably bite at seasons end (e.g. 2006). We are designing the most exciting midfield group in the comp. Sit back and enjoy Murph, Simmo, Bryce and co delivering bullets to Fev, Waite, Kennedy and Fisher in the forward 50. Just can't beat raw talent can you. At least you only have Port to compete with in SA. :)

i believe the question was who do we think is better out of Carlton and Essendon. I didn't think the Crows were part of the question. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong though

I hate Essendon more than any other club, but to suggest Essendon could be worse than Carlton is a joke. Carlton, in the last five years, have had salary cap problems, won 3 spoons, lost millions of dollars as a result of a decreasing member base and because of their inept management. I hate Essendon, but they are not nearly the "rabble" that Carlton are at the moment.

I hate Essendon with a passion - in case most on this forum didn't already know, but in terms of player development, coaching skill and culture, they would be one of the best clubs to go to I would have thought.

Carlton is an absolute basket case. Only their supporters would argue otherwise and they're just kidding themselves. A board no one wants, a coach no one wants, players who want to leave, financial crisis, etc, etc, etc.

However, I think Essendon have got problems surfacing. They can't recruit or trade in any decent players. They have a list which is about to fall apart. They have a coach who is only being kept on because he's been there so long. It's all bubbling under the surface and ready to vent.

But comparing the two is like choosing where to sit on the Titanic. ;)

Gee it sounds like you still have a fair bit of simmering bitterness after your failure last week to poach one of our talented young players. For the record, the Blues have 16 flags, and are therefore a much more successful Club than the Hawks will ever be. We also have a much more talented list than you guys at this stage, and therefore a brighter future. I think the Hawks should try to focus more on the development of their younger players rather than poaching others. The Hawks also need a coach who can coach - this should be a priority next year. After last weeks debacle, I doubt Pelican will be here in a years time. So it all points toward a little bit of work that needs to be done at Hawthorn's leafy-green Suburban headquarters. Now I'm beginning to see the origin of your bitterness. :)

Still dining out on the fact that your players stuck it to you and had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to re-sign.

If you're going to have a go at other teams, it's probably best you don't use Pagan in your argument. He's a good coach, but hated by Carlton players and board. Only reason he's still there is because your bankrupt club doesn't have the cash or nerve/guts/honour/respect to get rid of him.

Sniff... we'll eventually get over Thornton... sniff.. :(:(:(

...a 3 year contract immediately after Trade Week. Mm. Gee, I thought supposed disgruntled players either didn't sign or only signed 1 year contracts. News flash: Thornton's management used Pelican as leverage. Now's a good time for the Hawks to focus on fixing their problems - i.e Zac Dawson led defense, ordinary coach continually on the verge of being sacked by Jeff, ongoing Pelican disasters etc -rather that trying to poach young talent from other Clubs. :)

So what you're saying is that Thornton used Hawthorn to stiff Carlton.

Zac will be just fine, parrot.

If i were a 17 year old wanting to play footy in the big sticks, i would want to go to one of three places. Essendon, Collingwood or Carlton.
Lexus centre would be tempting wouldn't it!
You would not be too exited being picked up by the Tassie Hawks of the "Facility" Roos if you could help it!

Yes, Blues fans our looking forward to him lining up on one of our KP forward talents, although Fev's favourite Hawks defender is Croad at the moment - Croads complete implosion and string of dummy spits during their last encounter is still a source of amusement for many footy fans. Your coach put 2 extra players of Fev, but Croad was still embarrassing. Little wonder why the Hawks were so desperate to get Thornton. :)

'Where only the best will do'

Waverley Park will host the 24-man International Rules squad next week as the players prepare to travel to Ireland for the 2006 series.

Hawks Chance Bateman and Campbell Brown will join 22 of their counterparts from 13 AFL teams for International Rules Series’ training sessions scheduled on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October at Waverley Park.

AFL spokesperson Patrick Keane said Waverley Park was chosen as this year’s training venue because of its outstanding facilities.

“Waverley Park has outstanding facilities and it gives our team the best possible preparation heading into the International Rules Series,” he said.

“Our Football Operations department was aware of the quality of the facility and the number of coaching tools that are available which will allow us to give the players a lot of information in a short amount of time.

“The players will be coming back after a break from training so rehab is gong to be a high priority for us and with the facilities at Waverley the players are going to be able to prepare really well.”

I dunno about you, but to me it sounds like Hawthorn wouldn't be a bad club to go too after all. Once again, you have highlighted to the bigfooty brethern how little you know about football...congratualtions :)

How did Croad go the previous time we played you, 5 goals and BOG if I am right?

Meh, your back half wasn't fantastic either, you don't have anyone that can go with Franklin, Williams was giving you trouble and the likes Dixon were a thorn.

That day, you were a one man band...we had multiple options up forward.

If that was the case he would have resigned at the start of trade week when Carlton matched there offer, but he didn't because he wanted to be traded to Hawthorn, you know a club that has no debt a stable board rooom and haven't won the past 3 out of 5 wooden spoons.

Sad Sad day for Carlton having to force a player to play for there jumper, i guess Carlton is all out of pride. :)

Franklin also played a great game that day, do you remember the 6 goals he kicked, Ofcourse they wouldn't want to put Thornton on him because we all know that Thornton lacks pace.

Williams kicked a lazy 4 on Thornton, Thats 10 golas between the 2 players.

:)

Hmm, speaking of poaching players lets look at Carlton's list
Jordan Bannister
Barnaby French
Matthew Lappin
Nick Stevens
Troy Longmuir
Jason Saddington
Corey McGrath
Dylan McLaren
Heath Scotland
What about all the duds Pagan brought over when he came?

Seems like now Carlton's been scraping the bottom you start talking about player development, with all these high picks you've been getting.
Pity this talented list of yours hasn't done much yet. although I guess with all the hard work you guys have put in picking up spoons, you're too exhausted to actually develop players :)

1. No bitterness about not securing the services of Thornton.
2. Thornton signed a three year deal as a way to secure his future. Imagine if he has a horrid 2007 and Carlton delist him, he would be disappointed he didn't sign a three year deal. Chances are, we'll try and poach him at the end of 2007, and chances are he'll say that he wants out. Again.
3. Carlton have a much more talented list? Time for poll?
4. From memory, Clarkson 3 - Pagan 1. Maybe you should get a coach who can coach.
5. A multi-million dollar facility at Waverley Park which will be used by the International Rules team as they (AFL) see it as the best facility in Victoria, if not the country.
6. All this points towards an extreme jealousy by Carlton fans, and may as well throw Kangaroos fans in there as well, towards Hawthorn.
