As a neutral - Who have you supported in each Grand Final.

Just wondering what people think. I started to get into the game in the mid 90s, and with the exception of 99 and some of the Hawks 3peat I've watched most.

But for me
1997 - Not neutral
1998 - Not neutral
1999 - Neutral - No strong feelings either way about Carlton and North.
2000 - Melbourne - Wanted the upset
2001 - Brisbane - Didn't want Essendon tying the Crows back-to-back in the AFL era
2002 - Collingwood - Didnt want Brisbane tying the Crows back-to-back in the AFL era
2003 - Collingwood - Didnt want Brisbane beating the Crows back-to-back in the AFL era
2004 - Brisbane - Wanted to see history in the making
2005 - West Coast - If we were going to lose in the PF, I wanted it to be to the best
2006 - West Coast - If we were going to lose in the PF, I wanted it to be to the best
2007 - Port Adelaide - SA pride (Lived in NSW and hadnt lived the rivalry yet)
2008 - Hawthorn - Just wanted the upset
2009 - Geelong - I hated the way St Kilda played and wanted Geelong to beat them
2010 - Draw - I was telling people going into the week I wanted a draw because St Kilda cant win premierships and Collingwood cant win them in September.
2011 - Geelong - Loved the idea of a team only losing to 1 team all year. Had a very juniors feel about that
2012 - Sydney - I had a negative experience with a Hawthorn fan in 09 and wanted them to lose
2013 - Fremantle - As above
2014 - Sydney - as above
2015 - West Coast - As above
2016 - Western Bulldogs - Wanted the fairytale.........Until about half time where the one way umpiring was pissing me off so I switched
2017 - Not neutral
2018 - Collingwood - I wanted the worse team, who was based at the MCG to win it at home when they dont deserve the advantage to (in my mind) hopefully expediate the GF leaving the MCG monopoly
2019 - GWS - Wanted to see them win their first.
2020 - Neutral - Dislike both clubs about equally.

For the granny I almost always barrack for the underdog or whoever has the longer premiership drought. In some years I feel a lot more strongly about it than I do in other years. 2000 onwards:

2000 - Melbourne (underdogs)
2001 - Brisbane (underdogs)
2002 - Collingwood (longer drought)
2003 - Collingwood (longer drought)

2006 - Sydney (bitter at the Eagles)
2007 - Geelong (longer drought)
2008 - Hawthorn (underdogs)
2009 - St Kilda (longer drought)
2010 - St Kilda (longer drought)
2011 - Geelong (didn't feel strongly about it)

2002 - Collingwood
2003 - Collingwood
2004 - Port (Liked Burgoynes, Wanganeen, C.Cornes)

Basically boils down to which team I have the more recent or more severe grievance against.

2019: Not Richmond, because 2017.
2018: WCE, because not Victorian
2017: ...
2016: Not Sydney, because Tippett.
2015: Not Hawthorn, because 2012 Prelim.
2014: Nil all draw, because Tippett and 2012 Prelim.
2013: Not Hawthorn, because 2012 Prelim.
2012: Not Hawthorn, because 2012 Prelim.
2011: Not Collingwood, because 2009 Semi.
2010: St Kilda, because 1 premiership since 1897 is depressing.
2009: St Kilda, because 1 premiership since 1897 is depressing.
2008: Not Hawthorn, because 2007 Elim.
2007: Not Port, because Port.
2006: Not WCE, because of the preceding Prelim.
2005: Not WCE, because of the preceding Prelim.
2004: Not Port, because Port.

Grand Finals I remember watching:

1995: Carlton (dominant team, as a 6 year old I thought it would be no contest)
1996: Sydney
1997: Adelaide
1998: Adelaide
1999: Nobody
2000: Melbourne
2001: Brisbane
2002: Brisbane
2003: Brisbane
2004: Brisbane
2005: Sydney
2006: West Coast (was a bit sick of Sydney and some of their fans at that point having knocked us out of the prelim as a fait accompli)
2007: Port Adelaide
2008: Hawthorn
2009: Nobody
2010: Collingwood
2011: Collingwood
2012: Sydney
2013: Not Neutral
2014: Hawthorn (safe to say the COLA thing riled me a little at the time)
2015: Hawthorn
2016: Western Bulldogs/Sydney (like someone mentioned above after the free ride they got with the umps that day I switched my allegiance)
2017: Adelaide
2018: Collingwood
2019: Richmond (I rather rightfully deduced GWS was very lucky to get there and weren't within 2 weight classes of Richmond and won a sizeable amount of money betting heavily on Richmond to win by 60+)

Prior to 08 I didn't really pick sides, just a kid watching the footy
2008: Geelong (used to be amazed by this team that would always beat Richmond by 100)
2009: Geelong (same reason)
2010: St Kilda (were playing Collingwood)
2011: Geelong (combination of the past 3)
2012-14: No preference.
2015: West Coast (anyone but Hawthorn at this point)
2016: Bulldogs (with the crowd)
2017: Had a team
2018: West Coast (definitely anyone but Collingwood)
2019: Had a team

2000: Melbourne
2001: Brisbane
2002: Collingwood
2003: Brisbane
2004: Either - Wanted Port to win their first but would of been happy to see lions win 4 straight.
2005: West Coast
2006: West Coast
2007: Port Adelaide
2008: Geelong
2009: Geelong
2010: St Kilda
2011: Geelong
2012: Sydney
2013: Fremantle
2014: Sydney
2015: Hawthorn - Wanted to see the 3 peat.
2016: Footscray (Probably like 95% of footy fans)
2017: -
2018: West Coast
2019: -
2020: If Richmond don't make it then Port Adelaide.

2000 Essendon (I hate Essendon with a goddamn passion, but I admired them in the 2000 season)
2001 Brisbane (Redeeming Fitzroy horrid days and Brisbane were unbelievably good after the if it bleeds you can kill it match)
2002 Collingwood duh
2003 Collingwood duh
2004 Port Adelaide (as much as I hated Port, I wanted them to get their first grand final win unlike Fremantle)
2005 West Coast (Played a better style of footy and were enjoyable)
2006 Neutral
2007 Neutral (I love a good thrashing from Geelong though)
2008 Hawthorn (narrowly because I wanted to see Stewie Dew kick some goals which he did)
2009 St Kilda (this was the year the Saints should've won, but the toe-poke of doom cost them and I have heaps of family members supporting the saints and I knew a couple saints players)
2010 Collingwood Duh
2011 Collingwood duh
2012 Neutral
2013 Fremantle (According to that Facebook page called Freo Doker, Fremantle won that flag)
2014 Sydney (Just didn't like the arrogance of the hawk's supporters)
2015 Neutral (didn't like how the eagles got into the grand final due to the umpires and Hawthorn threatening our four-peat)
2016 Western Bulldogs (Ultimate underdogs, Best PF of all time as a neutral, Bulldogs having injuries and Bob Murphy)
2017 Adelaide (wanted seedsman to get his first GF victory and I hate Richmond with a passion)
2018 Collingwood duh
2019 Neutral (Just don't like both teams)
2020 Brisbane (If its with any match up, otherwise Port Adelaide or Neutral)

2015 - Hawks
2017 - Tigers

2019 - Tigers

Depends on who is playing who and the style of football they play. Usually if the Cats are not playing the underdog.

Only exception is if Collingwood are playing in which case I support the other team without exception. Would even happily support Hawthorn against Collingwood.
