Why arent our forwards coached to make leads when we are going inside 50?
Who knows what the coaches are doing/saying behind closed doors.

What I do know is some players have just "got it" and some never do get it.

Exhibit A is Fergus Greene who has the nous, game-reading ability and the pace to get on a lead into space. His teammates are starting to honour that ability. He's normally a good shot at goal and will get much better returns for his M50s in future. A likely 30-40 goalkicker in a couple of years, maybe even 2019.

Exhibit B is Jake Stringer who might finally be getting it hammered into him at Tullamarine but he never showed it at VUWO. If he ever masters it, he will be an incredibly dangerous player. Has the speed, the physique and the long kick to put the whole package together. Just not the brains and determination at this point.

Exhibit C is Tom Boyd. Leading up doesn't come naturally to him either, but he's a smart cookie. If he ever gets a bit of continuity as a forward we might see whether he can learn it. Or maybe the coaches don't want him playing that role - they might just want him as a pack-crashing, stay-at-home KPF.

Exhibit D is Josh Schache. Has the tank and pace for multiple leads but is not yet doing it to best effect. This is the bloke who needs to polish his leading skills, the one the coaches will get most return from if they can help him get there.

Exhibit E is Tory Dickson. More of an opportunist medium forward but he often leads and very often it's not honoured. Not sure why. Is he leading to the wrong places? Mistiming his leads? (maybe too early?)

BTW, a successful lead doesn't have to result in a mark and a goal to the lead-out player. If he creates a distraction, causes panic, draws at least one opponent and helps create more space for the stay-at-home players he may still have been instrumental in a team goal. And when young players are parked in a forward line with someone who leads well they should quickly get the idea themselves. That's another reason why - over time - Fergus could be gold for us.

After watching live yesterday, Hansen has to go next year. How are people even talking this guy up? We’ve got the worst forward line in the AFL
