Ashes 2021/22

In 15 completed innings in Australia he has passed 50 six times.

It’s only the absence of at least one big score that stops him having a very good record here. He can clearly handle it.

Marnus averages 32 more at home than he does away. He’s got a bit to do yet.
But that includes the UAE tour before he was even a fully established FC player

When you consider some of the roads that have been dished up over the last two series in Aus you can’t be hanging your hat on 50s

Who’s hanging his hat on it? The point is it proves he can succeed here as far as game and technique go.
Yet everyone here rightfully pointed out Warner’s lack of success in England going into 2019 even though he had 7 50s from 15 innings

Root has never had any success here. Let’s no pretend otherwise

Quite remarkably Joe Root has never played in a winning test match in Australia currently 0-8 from 9 tests and hasn't scored a 100 either from 9 test matches either

Is it that remarkable though they have won 4 from 25 in Aus in the 2000’s

It will be a career defining tour for him, he is undoubtedly in the greatest form of his career coming into the series. If he fails from a personal stand point it will hold him back in terms of his overall standing as a test batsman

If he makes 100 he would have conquered the final frontier from a personal standpoint

The reason England has no hope in the ashes is due to not having a front line spinner.

Even though Australia isn’t typically looked at as spinning conditions it’s still essential to have a spinner who can bowl with control and keep the pressure on so you don’t bowl the quicks into the ground

If we look at every ashes series here this century we have help clear advantage in this area in every series bar 2010/11

Lol okay Warner had a terrible record in England yet Root doesn’t in Australia
570 runs in 17 innings at 38 with 6 fifties is an average record. Not terrible, average.
651 runs in 25 innings at 26 with 6 fifties is a poor record.

Warner heading into his last series in England had an average English record, and after that series, it became a poor one. Is that an unfair assessment? If Root had a similar Ashes to Warner in England we'd say he'll have a poor record in Australia.

But the point being discussed was going into 2019 all the talk was about how Warner’s terrible in England.

David Warner in Eng (pre 2019)
15 innings, 556 runs at 37.06 with 6 50s

Joe Root in Aus
17 innings twice not out 570 runs at 38.00 with 6 50s

Going into their third away ashes their records are near on identical yet Root’s performances here have been getting labeled a success due to he 6 50s

It was an average record heading in. Saying it was terrible would be inaccurate. It's a terrible record now due to that tour result.

Look I have never been a massive fan of Warner. He comes across as a w***er and not that likeable

But the criticism he copped an awful amount of criticism here in the lead into the 2019 ashes

Outside of there records the circumstances of their arrivals couldn’t be any different. Warner was under done playing his first test since Cape Town while Root comes to Australia in career best form but potentially a but burnt out after a massive amount of test cricket in the past 12 months

For Root it won’t get any easier here as they have an attack that will struggle to take 20 wickets meaning they will often be behind in the game when he walks into bat.

Hopefully the Aussie crowds won't say dumb s**t about his mental health. I don't have great hopes though given the cesspit this series can be.

If it was an Australian going the other way in the same situation we know the Barmy Army would have plenty of songs ready to go in the name of banter (abuse).

They don't have too. Plenty of other stuff to talk about. In the name of banter of course.

wonder how many bristol references there'll be made, that could descend nicely into a cesspit and have holier than thou types loving it

Big ask to be the saviour coming off an extended break and two lots of surgery

He has to get it done with the bat and ball if they are to have any chance. If he bats well it takes a lot of pressure off Root and with the ball he is capable of having success here as he bowls 140 plus and is at you. The medium pace of Anderson and Broad will fail like it always does
