They had Larwood, who was a great fast bowler with real genuine speed during bodyline, together with Voce. Facing those guys under bodyline conditions with nearly every fielder on the leg side and averaging 56 was some effort. Averaged over 100 against them without bodyline tactics. Bradman had a great eye and quick reflexes, hence he would've been ok against anything the West indies threw at him.
Larwood would have been Hazlewood speed.

Facing those guys under bodyline conditions with nearly every fielder on the leg side and averaging 56 was some effort. Batting against it would've been terrifying and brutal. Larwood had a beautiful action.

Mitch Marsh looking the most comfortable I've seen him batting at test level.

And as I say that he nearly chops the ball on to his stumps.

The English attack back then had maybe one or two decent fast bowlers, the Windies from that era had a plethora of great fast bowlers in Holding, Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Walsh, Bishop and Ambrose with guys like Colin Croft and Patrick Patterson as back up.

There was no easy runs against those guys which is why I rate Allan Border so highly, one of the few guys that could make big scores against them regularly.
I agree with you re the Windies and Border. Best bat for Aus I've seen.

Body line tactics where you could stack behind square and just bowl bouncers at the body made it virtually impossible to safely score. They even had legside slip cordons. Larwood was a gun and Vokes(?) was pretty good too.

Bradman is that far ahead of anyone else it's out of this world. Every sport throws them up - Chamberlain, Jordan, Babe Ruth, etc

Bradman would have handled the Windies. I'll concede maybe not at 100 but still 80 or 90 average, and well above 50. FWIW it's worth I reckon Smith would average 35-45 against the Windies.

Given Hazelwood has been over 145 often this series that quick.
Yeah not dismissing it and I have no doubt Bradman would have proven to be the greatest of all time in any error but history remembers a lot of these older bowlers as faster than they really were.

The 1970s was when we first started getting consistently genuinely fast bowlers.

The Thing is these keyboard warriors have probably never faced a cricket ball in their lives, add to that what kind of faarkwit wants a player to fail to the detriment of the side. because one of their favourites can't get a gig or was dropped.

Not nice. Just sayin'......

Hope Marsh tons up before tea though. Nice for him and both Marsh boys get a ton in the series. Going to make selection for Boxing Day a little more interesting.

In most eras they'd have been blokes that hit 150. Maybe not as many but from what we have heard Larwood was really quick. not nice facing that speed under bodyline conditions.

in the 1950's Tyson and Statham were very quick. Richie Benaud always said Tyson was close to the fastest he had ever seen.

Oh yeah I can't wait to see how Starc proposed to Alyssa and the lame jokes about how bad he is around the house etc.

No doubt there will be a few hilarious stories thrown in about Alyssa's f***wit uncle just for good measure.
Heals - sports greatest love story...
