Way too may left handers in the top order.

Anderson will have a field day getting LBW's.

Filling it with right handers will merely increase the edges behind?

Pick the best bats regardless of which hand they bat.

Wade's bowling gets him the edge

but seriously, of the younger guys - Usman should be unselectable until he decides not changing his game at all and trying to get back into the team through weight of runs (fc average this season: under 40) to, you know, changing his game even a bit is the right way to go, Doolan's got half a season behind him (although I would have picked him for this test) & Wade as keeper may well bat ahead of Maxwell anyway. There's no doubt Wade's the best young batsman not already in the Aus. top 6. Whether they want to make the huge call in moving Wade, or if they just want to pick Bailey, I dunno know. But he should be a very realistic option

also i wonder if clarke's quote the other day about 'expect wade to bowl more' was made with Hussey's looming retirement in mind

I'd like Klinger.

But Ferguson would be my one it we wanted a younger player

Running down the run scorers' list it's clear that the best bats in Australia are already in the side more or less. Dire state of affairs. But we'll see as the SS gets going again

I would like to know how Khawaja is the clear front runner. Apart from already having a few test caps where he performed abysmally, he hasn't set the world on fire at all this season in the SS. He's still doing his same old same old of not converting starts and putting himself under pressure by getting bogged down way too often.

I agree. What is with the Khawaja obsession. Klinger, Ferguson or Dussey for mine

d.hussey must have spat in some-ones soup.
whats his FC average? 55? whats his average in the UK? about 60?
....
go figure.

hodge and hussey were scoring a tonne of runs and their early career issues with the short ball were fairly well contained at that stage.
As for hussey he's at the end of his career I think only 2 years behind his brother and been on the decline for a year or two now.
I can't really see him as a viable option for all his skills and talents.
As for technical flaws, didn't stop d.hussey and hodge from scoring a tonne of runs.

What do you reckon happens if Khawaja has a real quiet last 4 rounds of the shield
And will ODI duty's prevent some players playing shield and making a case for themselves ?
We've seen from the selectors before that they will somehow make a case that T20 form is good enough to be selected in the test team.

I don't have an answer, but what I do know is that it's not about blooding someone for the future. The future is now and it doesn't matter whether the bloke is 20 or 40, we need the best possible replacement to perform in 2013.

Khawaja doesn't deserve a recall. He has not changed his game and is still the same Khawaja who failed before at test level. Khawaja would be a nightmare to bat with, he gets tied down by good bowlers and then he can't/won't rotate the strike. Plus he is one of the worst fielders I have ever seen.

We need someone to come in and bat a 6 with a similar game to Hussey. We can't keep on changing the batting lineup around and I don't like the idea of Watson at no.6, Wade at 7 and then the tail end. We need stability at no.6. Someone to bat with Clarke and then take over when batting with the lower order.

What made Hussey such a valuable player was that he could form good partnerships with the specialist batsmen in the team and also was fantastic when batting with the tail enders. Du Plessis did a similar job for South Africa when he came in and supported the tail enders perfectly. That is exactly what we need an experienced, mentally strong cricketer to shore up the middle order. I think the options are Doolan or Bailey.

Has anyone on here seen Doolan bat? I haven't seen him so just wondering what his technique is like and how he bats? His numbers are certainly impressive. This would be my top 6 for India if Watson isn't fit.

1. Warner
2. Cowan
3. Hughes
4. Khawaja
5. Clarke
6. Doolan

It really is hard to pick, no one is putting their hand up. If you look at the stats you could even justify having Burns in there. I didn't realise Khawaja was averaging so little this year, if we bring him back and he is in bad touch it could just be like when Hughes was brought back his second time.

Really need to see the last couple of games of shield though, it's so frustrating that big bash is on instead of shield.

The big problem is there is no obvious replacement, and not because there are three or four firing but because all the candidates have quesion marks hanging over them - and most teams only have one Shield game before the squad for India has to be announced.

The other issue is; if Watson is not going to bowl, does he deserve a spot on batting alone on current form? We could be looking at 2 replacements for India and anywhere up to 5 for England (Clarke and Hussey were the only ones in the top six I already had down as going to England if fit and available) depending on how players go in India.

Definitely want to see Khawaja given another go, he has a fluent technique that looks right at home on the international stage. He'll start converting his scores eventually, just needs a bit of coaching and mental application, but he's the future for Australian cricket so get him in now.

Andrew McDonald when he returns from injury? Batting seems to have improved considerably over the past 2 years, and his bowling always looked good at a higher level, I'm surprised he hasn't played more ODI.
