I heard today that Ashley Hansen has been offered a one year deal at the Eagles - but has said "no thanks" and is returning to Melbourne in a couple of weeks.. No great loss in my opinion. Would be in the queue behind McDougall, Gaspar and Johnson.

Saw this coming. Why would he bother signing on when he can't even get a game in a side without a FF.
He'll play senior footy next season for a Victorian team. Hope he does well.

Pitty if this rumour is true. He seems to have potential. Hope we can at least get a 2nd round pick for him. At least he can stay clear of injuries which is more then one can say about Gasper.

Whilst on the Gasper subject is everyone else sold on him? I know he has had injuries but he has been at a club for over 3 years now and not fully estabished himself. I still think he is suspect when going for contested marks and if he is to be sucessfull his best position would be CHB.

Any thoughts?

Unless he can string together at least half a season without injury next year, I reckon we are better off without him. Not worth the effort.

Damn, just when the Black Ducks get a player in form and producing, they go off to another team.

He has played quite well this year, but has obviously realised he is not at the forefront of Woosha's planning for the future.

His old man, Clark Hansen (ex ABC Radio), had a connection with the Colliewobbles, so it will be interesting to see where Ashley pops up in 2004.

If he's smart, he'll refuse any trade and go into the pre-season draft. Pretty much assured of senior footy at either the Bulldogs or Carlton. Geelong would probably be very interested as well.

We'd be extremely lucky to get a 2nd rounder for someone who has yet to play an AFL game. I do hope we get something useful though as he did look to have talent and does walk away with two years of WCE time invested into him.

On Gaspar, I also think 2004 is a crucial year. Basically stay fit or sayonara. I certainly think if he stays fit he will be in our best 22. I guess the question would be how much might his injuries have impacted upon his ability to play. Time will tell. I would say though that the club appears to have a high opinion of him as he has been in the team ahead of some others early in 2002 and 2003 (before getting injured). I don't know about being suspect overhead - never really noticed that.

Gaspers stats for the 5 games played only averaged 3.6 marks per contest. From memory spent most of the time on the field, but I could be wrong about that. 8.0 posessions per game not an encouraging stat for a CHF.

Even Jack's worst games were better then all but one of Gasper's games.

Also Jack too is not noted as a big marking target yet managed to average 4.5 marks per game.

Shame to see Hansen go without really seeing what he's capable of if thats true, but you can't expect every player to be a big success.

On Gaspar, he really needs an injury free season to show what he's capable of. On his current record you'd wonder if he'll ever get it. We need to stick with him for a bit more though.

Its a shame he never played a single game for the club. Injuries robbed us of seeing what he can do. I guess some other club must have expressed interest for him to knock back the contract or he must really want to return home.

Yeh its a bugger, ill talk to his brother tomorrow and see if its true because i do know that he wants to come back home. It was a pity he wasn't able to get a game with the eagles. I guess his footy debut might have to be with another team

Real shame he didn't get to show his talent at AFL level with us.

Oh well, lets just hope he doesn't make us pay for letting him go too much.

That said, best of luck to him I guess...

damn shame that one - I've always said that a club should never delist anyone without giving them at least 3 games to show what they can do unless in extreme circumstance where the game is no inept at lower levels.

I just hope it doesn't bite us in the ass by going to a Vic club and becoming a very good (or even decent) senior player....

Pretty strange for a bloke in his position to knock back a contract. I wonder if a Victorian club has guaranteed him a spot on their list?

Oh well, good luck to him.

If his heart wasn't in it (because he wanted to go home) it may have reflected in his attitude around the club - hence no games.

Pure speculation with absolutely no facts to base it on, but sometimes that seems to be what a lot of BF is about:D

Ron Skender and Christian Kelly come to mind too.

Pity about Hansen, I thought some performances with the Ducks would have given him an opportunity with the Eagles this year, but that was not the case.

Still wish him all the best for whatever club he does play for.

1 yr contract = we don't think you are good enough for senior footy but will hedge our bets and hang on to you for another season just in case.

Not surprising he turned it down if you ask me. Much better chance of getting a game in Melbourne.

When I met him at a function earlier in the year, he seemed happy and enjoying himself. I certainly didn't get the impression he wanted to "go home".

Perhaps the failure to get a game by the end of the year made him feel he was too far back in the queue.

What seems even more suprising is that Troy Wilson said in his interview that Woosha was looking at playing the younger guys next year.

If Hansen has knocked back a contract it may be a big mistake on his behalf, especially if he doesn't get picked up by another club.

Yep, a likely scenario. You would've thought another contract but help that feeling, but if there's a chance for a regular game in Melbourne next year possibly that lure is stronger.

Maybe it is only a negotiation ploy and Hansen wants a longer term deal. From a players perspective what is the club saying about you if they are only offering you a one year deal. If WCE are serious about Henson for long term maybe a two year deal is what is needed.
Cheers
