That was my point though. His upside is far greater than any pick we would get in exchange for him, while he hasn't been delisted because we've had plenty of fat cut from the list that has been out of contract while he hasn't.

And will that change while we've got players like Brennan, McGinnity and Wilson?

Oh wow.. he averaged 0.2 goals a game in 2011 compared to Yeo's 0. Considering Yeo's team was pathetic last year and Smiths made a preliminary final in 2011, that isn't the most surprising thing in the world.

It's incredible watching somebody just blatantly defend and try and justify the actions of Smith.

He's not lazy, he just doesn't overextend. He's conserving his energy. He was tired because he's just covered somebody else's player. His kicking isn't bad, he's just taking risky options.

This will be his last year on our list IMO EH

I've never been a big Smith fan, even in 2011 it took him a while before he could put a solid game together and even then he was off-and-on. That said, I hope he gets a chance in the NAB cup since it would be good to get another look at him. I think that regardless of his ceiling, his last two years make this year a make-or-break year for him.

As of today I don't feel like he's shown himself to be either a run-with, accountable defender, nor a great rebounder/exit from the defensive 50. Even if he was playing as well as Yeo today (which I don't believe he is, though they have different games), he's still two years older which makes Yeo much more valuable IMO.

You've gotta love diversionary tactics. The heat is off Matt Priddis for the minute. Taking a line from the NFL, maybe Adam could get them both to run interference. Imagine those two hairstyles going crazy.

Something I've gleaned though. If the Ash Smith's of the footballing world ever get their tyres up to 32 kpa, by jeez we're going to be a good side.

Comparing Matt Priddis to Smith is a terrible comparison. Priddis gets the most out of what God gave him. No one disputes that. People argue that because of what God gave him he isn't worth having in the team. Smith is exactly opposite. God gave him great things. He doesn't want to use them. Put Matt's brain in Smith's body and you would have an elite football player.

With the greatest of respect Fidstar, could I just make one small request?

Please don't take me seriously? Seriously.

And as a by the by, I'm an atheist. Matt and Ash have what evolution handed out. I quite like the idea of brain transplants though. Imagine George Bush Jnr's brain in Chuck Norris's body. Hah - had you there for a sec!

NOW it's end thread
Oh yeah, let's hate on a guy who's smart enough to be setting himself up post-football. You know all those players who are at uni part-time whilst playing AFL? Yeah, let's hate on them too. Silly, silly people.

Uni is ok, doing something to set yourself post football by going to uni and studying is good. Being worried about what you look like rather than what you play like puts people off. Buddy cops it for being the same with his fashion label. Its like that segment we saw ages ago of Clark & Watson from the Aus cricket team going clothes shopping & getting manicures in thier spare time like a pair of girls. It makes people think they're soft and soft people usually dont stand up in the heat of battle. Luckily Clarke has sorted himself out and stood up well at times for Australia, Watson is still soft as butter.. hence people not liking him much.

I'd say a great strength is not to care what other people think.

If you knew your current career would end at 30 and you'd have to find a completely new job with a new set of skills you'd do what you can to help that along.

Absolutely, but i was endeavouring to explain why people see a fashion label as an undesirable profession for a footballer.
As for worrying about what others think, I love the quote "Dont worry about what others think of you, they're too busy worrying about what you think of them". ;)

Still not named in this weeks side, which includes Main and McGuiness...not sure where he is at, haven't heard anything about him all year.

How is setting up your own business an undesirable thing for a footballer?

I'm sorry, but I can't buy into this judgement and hate for somebody who has a life and career prospects outside of football.

Its not the setting up of a business that causes the negative remarks, its the fact that a lot of people see him as someone who doesnt go hard enough on the football field, and the image he presents on and off the field compounds that. For me, i couldnt care what he looked like, as long as he plays great footy, unfortunately, he hasnt done so yet, so the fact that he spends his off field time on fashion, gives the impression that its more about how he looks than what he does.
I have no real care what he does as i dont see him making it in the afl anyway at his current level of output, but i can see why others are critical.

I'm pretty sure this thread was about Ash Smith and whether he can play, but if you're going to get all Aristotle, I'll join the party.

To not care what other people think takes a staggering amount of self belief and can be just a little bit dangerous. I'd counsel that it's more a question of whom is listening.
BF offers an example. There's a few 'round here with opinions and insight worth listening to. Equally, there's a few who (exercising diplomacy here), you wouldn't cross the road to piss in their collective ears if their brains were on fire. I find myself somewhere in the middle. I like football and have points of view. But I don't do it for a living and don't pretend that I do.

I'd love to see the fashion sense and hairstyles of people on here.
I think it's cute that you think any of the posters on here have fashion sense.

I thought Bintang singlets were fashionable..

Is he injured? If not, a bit worrying that he's not even named in a NAB cup squad?

From memory he was doing isolated work during the preseason at one point away from the main group - perhaps he's still not match fit?
