Basically, I'm asking a noob question because I have nfi what I'm doing. But, I guess it could later be a reasonable thread for others to do the same thing. Anyway...

I'm 17, was born in Australia, lived here all my life, but don't have my own passport. My parents were going to get me an Australian one, but I can see benefits of having an Irish Passport (my brother has one).

If I get an Australian Passport, does that mean I can't get an Irish one? Family is going to Thailand in 4 weeks time, and I THINK my options are to get the Australian passport or try and get an Irish passport and some kind of Visa between now and then. Anybody know anything on this subject?

You can have more than one passport. I'd like to get a foreign passport but unfortunately my parents and grandparents were all born in Australia.

you are allowed to hold more than one passport. given you're leaving in 4 weeks it's probably easier to get an australian one for now.

You can be a Dual Citizen, my Australian passport was quicker to get than my Irish one so if you're leaving in 4 weeks i'd just get your Australian passport and then worry about the irish one later. Plus travelling in and out of Australia will be easier with a native passport

Get the Aussie one.

$104 for childs passport (5 years)
Have a copy of your birth certificate
Also have one of your parents birth certificate or citzenship certificate to prove they were Australian Citizen at the time of your birth.
Make sure your referee is not related to you in anyway.
And for the love of god FILL IT OUT WITH BLACK PEN!!!

Neither Australia or Ireland have any barriers against duel citizenship. Some countries do though - e.g. Germany requires you to renounce all other nationalities prior to becoming a citizen. Would definitely recommend you get your duel nationality of Ireland at some point if you have any intention of travelling and working in the EU - those things are worth more than gold.

Getting a passport doesn't mean anything in and of itself though... you can be a duel citizen without ever holding a passport, and obtaining one doesn't change your status in any way.

I hate you.

Last time I got a passport I was told that the photo wasn't right. They changed their tune when I told them that the photo was taken at the same Australia Post outlet the previous week for the express purpose of being used in a passport.

Mate, I had the exact same thing happen. Got a photo done at the post office (they knew it was for a passport), only to return the next day and be told that it wasn't appropriate. They tried to charge me for the next lot of photos, but I wasn't having a bar of it.

Then they said that the form I had filled out was incomplete (they said I must have forgotten to print the last page), even though it wasn't. Then when I came back the next day apparently I hadn't printed it out dark enough (yet it was the exact same form as the day previously), so that required another trip back to the post office.

Despite these problems with idiot postal workers, the actual passport arrived about three days later.

Yes, you can.

if i fly out on sunday morning at 4am

would it be better to go out with my mates and not drink too much then go to the airport?

or should I stay home and try stay up all night?

or should I stay home and try sleep to 1 or 2am before i go to the airport?

How long is the flight? 1) sounds like the best option, but you'll know yourself if its realistic. 2) is a disaster waiting to happen.

Option A, i can't remember how long you said you're going away for but you may as well do something fun and with your mates before you leave - its definitely better than staying home.

its just to bali so its like 4 hours.

tough decisions ahead, need to be awake and alert when I get to bali, hoping I wont have to pay for accomodation if things go in my favour

oh i thought you were going on a massive trip to Asia haha
if your just going to Bali for a week or two or whatever you may as well get some sleep at home early and then head to the airport

Go with c), if you need to be awake. Alcohol + 4 hours reduced mobility wont leave you awake or alert.

yeah i am only in bali the one night

by flying perth-bali-kl-cambodia i saved about $400

perth-kl-cambodia was a nightmare like 20 hours travel with layovers as well so my best option was through bali

Don't be hating! I would have just taken the photo again for free (seems it was our mistake) but then I am awesome and the boss.

On the other hand I don't care cause I'm taking a package and finish up on the 24th....:thumbsu:

Where/how did you do all of this?

My old man was born in England so I'm eligible, but the last time I looked into it I couldn't find out exactly how to go about it so I didn't bother.

Go to the ukinaustralia website and print off the C1 form and then organize an appointment at the post office and they will check you have filled it out properly and have all the right documents and then send it off for you. Will cost you about $275.00
