Having a more cont
Is it time to forgo the 7 def, 7 fwd, 2 ruck and 6 mids system that worked so well in 2018?

I believe that Kelly, Yeo and Shuey could all be brilliant rotating through the forward line. Sheed has done very well floating forward to slot some goals but I don't view him as a natural fwd, more a mid with a deadly left boot.

With this in mind, I think the system should be 7 def, 6 fwd, 7 mid, 2 ruck.

7 mids:
--- Shuey. 2/3 mid 1/3 fwd
--- Kelly. 2/3 mid 1/3 fwd
--- Yeo. complete mid
--- Gaff outside mid
--- Redden mid
--- Sheed mid
--- Venables 2/3 mid 1/3 fwd

Venners is an interesting one. I think he should be given first crack at a mid spot after a full pre season. Maybe Ainsworth or Brayshaw or even ONeil, this should be a WAFL form earnt spot

I think the plan was the have venables and Rioli rotate more into the midfield.

I think Cripps should be part of that midfield rotation discussion

We inevitably lose games where he has a stinker, so getting him more involved earlier is important IMO
Cripps had a terrible year and it hurt our midfield and F50 pressure. We also missed Lecca who really was a good link man from HB into the F50. He also did plenty of good work in the midfield. I really hope we get Kelly because that will free up the likes of Yeo et al to really dominate around the ground.

We keep bunging on that after Yo,Shuey,Reddan theres not much below them. The problem wasnt below them it was above them!!
Looking at this year we lined up in the physicality stakes [1] Underdone NN 2018.. [1]Lycett
[2]Yo [2]Vardy
[3]Hickey [3]Yo
[4]Shuey [4]Shuey
[5] Reddan [5]Reddan
Having big tough blokes in the ruck who [ unlike Mumme ] actually had a bit of talent took a lot of pressure off Yo.With two of them there was always a big body throwing his weight around.Dont underestimate the value of a decent thug!!!

Is he that quick? I mean he's not slow but I wouldn't call him a speedster or anything
His draft profiles in the day rated his speed. Think due to his role it's not on display as much. That said he's no Hill but probably has the speed to break the lines and cause a few head aches IMO.

I dunno, maybe he just hasn't has the chance to show it much but I don't remember thinking he was that quick.
I'd definitely like to get him in the side though, he's a quality player.

Think his speed is comparable to peak Brodie Smith. Pre ACL Smith was a genuine head ache when he got the ball and was able to run with it.

Just went back and re read a couple articles from 2016 and they all rate his speed. Don't think he lost that pace as his still young and hasn't packed the kg's since.

We all love the Idea of Brander as a wingmen but I think Josh is more likely to succeed on a wing IMO.

Will be interesting to see how we handle the wing next year without the default option there anymore

We've invested pretty heavily in Rothams development as a Backman so I reckon he'll stay there. But I'm sure we can agree he's far too handsome to be hidden away in the 2s.

Yep. I don't really want Gaff to be targeted due to him being our main wingman.

Redden's come out and said that he's best role is as balanced mid but I reckon we should use him as an outside option. After all his 2018 finals role as Gaff's cover was huge.

I'd actually be keen on pushing Duggan up onto a wing next year, he's got the tank and a fair bit more toughness about him that the previous wingman.

My biggest gripe with Rotham is that he keeps going to ground ala WAFL footy.Shouldnt be too hard to train him out of it.

I'm thinking that Venables will have a breakout year next year between the two flanks. Providing he has an uninterrupted pre-season.
From the photo of him back at training, he looks ripped as farrrk.
He is skillful player with a bit of x factor and should quell the loss of Rioli somewhat.
Was thinking he might come good with all that time off building himself up and working on skills etc, was a little underdone body-wise...and was starting to show some jets. As you say, be a bonus with him back in form.

If we can land Kelly and get Venables on the park i really think we could have a top shelf midfield with some tinkers to our game plan.

Our midfield was one of the few teams that used a player as a defensive wing ( Us and Hawks did it perfectly with Scully and Masten) But i think we might move away from that and play a more contested style of football with the players we have in our team.

Players roles:

Sheed: (185cms 87Kgs)
I always thought he would be our inside mid beast but he has shown ( as seen in the 2018 finals) that he is a great option for a wing. Now for me he replaces Masten on the wing , now Sheed wont be playing a defensive wing but as a wingman who can spend minutes in the guts like Gaff does. He is a great kick and he is on the few mids who kicks goals.

Gaff: (182cms 83kgs) Just needs to keep doing what he i doing but spend less minutes in the guts and aim to be kicking more goals like he did in 2018.

Shuey: (183cms 90kgs) Continue his great form of the last 2 years but i think he could benefit some time on the HFF and rotate with some of he HFF's

Yeo: (190cms 90 gs) Same as last year. I really think he struggled with lower foot problems ( Toe & calf) in the later half of the year so i think at full fitness he will go up another level. Can go head to head in the beasts of Bont, Fyfe, Danger and Martin.

Kelly: ( 183cms 82kgs)
Replaces Sheeds 2019 role in the centre. Can also rotate onto the wing and HFF. Adds some class around the ball.

Redden: (190cms 85kgs )
Replaces Hutchings as our tagger. Should play a tagging role in the mould of Stenglien who was a big bodied mid with a great defensive mindset that Redden clearly has. Redden has more versatile than Hutchings who in that he can be a ball winner inside & outside. Another big bodied player who can mark.

Venables: ( 187cms 83kgs) Hope he can return after a year out. Quick player with a big frame who i think will replaces willies projected role as a HFF/Mid. Adds some versatility in the midfield.

Role players:

Cripps, Ryan, Pet & Cameron to spend time rotate for small portions to give players a chop out.

So overall with a fit Nic Nat and the players listed we have a VERY good midfield with a good blend of pace, grunt & class. Personally i think our lack of contested play was a design of our game plan with Simmo even mentioning it a few times throughout the year he didn't think it was an important stat. Rightly or wrongly he was backing in his gameplan which worked for him in 2018 but i expect he will change it up like he has done in the past because this year it didn't click.
