Ok im going to go as far as saying this will be the best midfield in the history of the clubs existing, beating out the tom swift led midfield in the early 2010's and the 06 era

Im ok with saying it ****ing well aint a touch on the 06 midfield. Cousins, Judd and Kerr were 3 of the top 5 mids in the league and were being fed by the best ruck in the league.

2006: Cox Judd Kerr Cousins Embley Braun Fletcher

2020: Natanui Yeo Shuey Kelly Gaff Sheed Redden

I'm not saying it's better. Judd Kerr Cox and cousins were top 5 in the afl with Judd one of the best ever.
I will say it's ****ing great and the best in the AFL right now.

Yeah I forgot about stenglein lol

For my mind Embley, Stenglein and Braun are every bit as good as Sheed, Gaff, Redden. Judd, Cousins and Kerr vs Shuey, Yeo and Kelly. And you're talking Cox in his prime vs Nicnat a few games post his second ACL. Im sorry but i don't think it's even a close call. If you gave that midfield the current forward line, defence and coaching setups you are talking greatest team of all time stuff. AKA bombers 2000, geelong 2008 etc on paper.

I did t say it was better than 06.

That was dkalphy

has Gaff gone past Embley as a wingmen?

Yes Embers is a normie but his other accolades aren't that flashy.

Gaff is a club champ and 2 time AA.

The best part about strengthening our midfield with Tim Kelly is that we didn't weaken our already excellent backline and forwardline to make it happen.

Compare that to the mob down the road who lost their second best midfielder and gained Jesse Hogan lol
Personally I think our backline has dropped off. Almost every player was worse than 2018 apart from Jetta and Shep. Hurn and Schofield are getting on now. Our smaller guys haven't rediscovered their mojo.

Our run and kicking out of defence is a real worry and our only real area of deficiency i see, particularly if injuries arise. Hurn kicking it down the line is just too ****ing predictable and both he and Jetta are at ages where soft tissue injuries start to become a major worry. We've already had a few with jetta and hurn has definitely lost 10m in his kicking penetration.

Agree with this, overall our defence went backwards
- Cole regressed, badly
- Duggan didn't kick on and was hampered by injury late
- Rotham was criminally underplayed
- Schoey was solid but showed flashes of being completely cooked (i.e. when Rata tore him to shreds)
- Barrass lost confidence and was exposed
- Gov OK but teams are proactively developing strategies to mitigate his influence
- Hurn became more injury-prone for the first time in his career

But on the flipside Watson & Nelson both improved and Shep went to nek level

Im wrapt to have Kelly here but agree with a lot of the above writers.Contested footy!!.Im worried by two things. [1] The ruck could be a problem.NN fully fit feeding that midfield would be a sight to behold;but what happens if he goes down again? We need muscle at the top and without NN we look bare.Hickey is not a physical beast. He tries his heart out but lacks oomph.Vardy is now a very valuable commodity. We need him fit and firing.Hes tough!!.No other big on our list looks up to it.Williams shows great promise but i see him as more a key forward. He doesnt have the physique to throw his weight around.Would love to get Lycett back!
[2] Players this year looked happy and content.Premiership under the belt, lots of babies around the "family club". Can we rediscover the hunger? We definitely need to rejuvenate the team.OAllen must become a permanent fixture. He gives us a lot of those little flicks/knockons etc that Rioli did.Brander has the size, speed, marking ability and kick to become a permanent backman. He and OAllen can switch comfortably. We need to slightly change our way of doing business in defence. We need to use Gov better.I know it sounds stupid but couldnt he play as our second ruck? Hes done it before.OAllen did it quite successfully and Gov is bigger and stronger.Plus it frees him up.I think if teams are strategising to bypass him; rucking would be ideal.NN aside the ruck is a potential achilles heel.I love the thought of Gov freewheeling through the middle. With his size, aggression, marking and elite field kicking he could do in the midfield what he does in defence.Just go where the ball is/or is gunna be.Brander needs to fill his shoes in defence.

Edited and still no paragraphs :drunk:

Even NicNat couldn't save us.

He played what? 5 games? the finals games he was underdone and the Collingwood game he was injured.

He has massive upside from what he delivered this year, if he stays fit playing 60% match time that's a big help.

Sure there's still work to be done, losing Mitchell as coach I think has hurt us, but when you have guys like Sheed and Redden as your 6th/7th string midfielders you're in a good spot.

Embers is sadly under-rated for some reason. One of our very best utilities over the journey.

I thnk Barrass looked at his best this year when he was spoiling the footy 10 rows back, than when he was trying to intercept.
