Squiggle tips Demons at 77% chance -- What's your tip? -- Team line-ups »
Thinking it's more about Hocking having more coaching experience in state leagues; having won a premiership while coaching Port Adelaide. So Hocking is basically demoted? He was the stoppages assistant, Harvey was the midfield coach. Seemed to be some overlap there, our stoppages set up at times has been terrible.
A good footy brain is all I care about, not what position they played.ah ok it was boyd as backline coach
dont mind that but im not sure why we constantly get players to coach in positions they never played
longmuir was a forward/ruck - defensive coach (admittedly he did brilliantly)
boyd was a midfielder - defensive coach (he occasionally ran off half back i suppose)
anthony rocca was a full forward - ruck coach
ill back these blokes in. but any chance of doing something that makes sense?
And occasionally a metre or so over the sideline.Interesting. Don’t mind having 1 less coach to be honest. Hard to judge from the outside. Without knowing Sando and Harvey’s roles for next year I’m hoping this means we are giving a bit more responsibility to our on field leaders and the players themselves to organise things and change things up when needed.
My only concern is will the core group of Bucks, Sanderson, Harvey be a bit more daring.
What’s Maxy’s Job description? Don’t think he’s listed as an assistant coach but seems pretty involved from the sidelines.
but my point being where have these blokes learned this stuff. im sure darren glass would be a good defensive coach because thats where he always played, but im not sure about someone whos been taught backline tactics within like 1 year. would you recruit mick martyn as a forward coach? no.A good footy brain is all I care about, not what position they played.
Just because they didn’t play there doesn’t mean they don’t understand the position and how it’s played. Like I said it comes down to your footy brain and how you can coach and implement a game style that will work for the players.but my point being where have these blokes learned this stuff. im sure darren glass would be a good defensive coach because thats where he always played, but im not sure about someone whos been taught backline tactics within like 1 year. would you recruit mick martyn as a forward coach? no.
yeah i agree and am well aware of thisJust because they didn’t play there doesn’t mean they don’t understand the position and how it’s played. Like I said it comes down to your footy brain and how you can coach and implement a game style that will work for the players.

He did earn one of his 3 All Australian places as a defender. It all seems rather underwhelming............I'm sure Boyd will be a capable backs coach and would've learned a lot off Longmuir. But the ruck/stoppage area is screaming out for some specialist help.

If we're going in with one less coach then I hope we redirect that money into our sports science / medical department.
Thanks for the info re Maxwell. Much appreciated JabsoI'm not sure it's a demotion these days. The path to senior coaching is a lot more
He's the Leadership and Culture Manager. He works across all teams (AFLW, VFL, VFLW, Netball). I'm not sure if he answers to Geoff Walsh or perhaps even directly to Anderson, but he's certainly separate to the coaching panel. I think he's only involved on game day to monitor communication between players/coaches etc. I believe he still works for Melbourne Storm in a similar role too.
He did earn one of his 3 All Australian places as a defender.
and played the last 3 to 4 seasons of his career as a defender.......He did earn one of his 3 All Australian places as a defender.
Yeah maybe in a perfect world. Not all the past time greats make good coaches.yea
yeah i agree and am well aware of this
let me give you a situation. You are tasked with recruiting a whole coaching staff. You have two options at each position:
Backline coach: Stephen Silvagni or Tony Lockett
Midfield Coach: Chris Judd or Matthew Scarlett
Forward coach: Jason Dunstall or Mick Martyn
Ruck Coach: Dean Cox or Brent harvey
Now youre taking SOS, Judd, Dunstall and Cox every time
i know this is a very exaggerated situation, but it illustrates my point. Collingwood always seems to recruit left-field options on their coaching staff and barring Longmuir i think it has cost us. Its the reason our ruck has worse connection with the midfield than a telstra line. Anthony Rocca rucked a total of about 5 minutes in his career. He may understand the position well, but nowhere near as much as Dean Cox or Brad Ottens etc.
Yep that was beside the fact though. I was talking theoretically from a knowledge point of viewYeah maybe in a perfect world. Not all the past time greats make good coaches.
Harvey has been interviewed for Crows job.
