Assistant Coaches 2017 - Lade returns!

I don't see why an assistant coach would be some massive announcement. If we had someone, we would know by now.
Given how people are complaining that it hasn't been announced would suggest that to many it is of massive importance. In the off season any announcement that gets the club media exposure is going to be treated as a big announcement.

As RussellEbertHandball posted above, the club would be managing the timing of announcements. With the trade period and the lead up to the 2017 fixture being announced, which included yesterday's China game announcement there is no reason for the club to announce another assistant coach appointment yet.

Just to play devil's advocate - what are the chances that such an appointment wouldn't leak? Plenty of people (not at Port) would have to know. It seems just as likely that there is no announcement to make.

China then 31st October list lodgement then a new coach, that seems to make sense to stagger your announcements especially if the bloke we appoint is on holidays and out of the country. Our 1-4 year players don't comeback until 21st November, so 2 weeks before that is probably when the new bloke will start.
I thought the young fellas were due back on the 7th and the rest join them on the 21st.

I've been anticipating it more than trade week, the fixture release, the draft. I think our success hinges on a quality senior assistant with a sound tactical mind. I think Hinkley needs it, for his own survival.

The more people say we need a tactical assistant coach, the more I think "Why?" Either Hinkley is good enough to coach in his own right or he isn't. I don't want his held held - any success or failure this year should be wholly and solely resting on his shoulders.

I think it should be a minimum requirement that they are "tactical"... whatever that means. If they aren't then they're not a coach.

I think Hinkley should sink or swim with what he has. We're better off not getting any more coaches because there is a high likelihood we'll be in the market for a new senior coach by the end of the year.

I agree. Especially a game-day tactician. Someone that bounces ideas, foresee opposition tactics, react to game day deficiencies, takes players under his wing to mentor/inspire, has a new voice to instill aggression, and can see things that potentially Hinkley and co are missing. But Ken still the lead man. Someone Ken respects very highly. Walsh and Richardson ilk. If no announcement and status quo...

I tend to agree.

People seem concerned that we are not employing a senior assistant to carry Hinkley. If Hinkley needs carrying so badly he is not the man for the senior coach's role and propping him up so he is not sacked, or worse, is given another contract extension, will harm us in the long run.

He can take all the credit he wants if we go top 4 and win the flag. His last two tactical assistants got poached as we rose, if we can just have that problem again in exchange for a flag we should be happy.

But if he fails, I'd like to know there's someone already here who hasn't been so much part of the fail but can hold the pieces together for up to half a season that leads up to one of the biggest out-of-contract trade periods for us for a very long time. Nicks and Voss have been here for a while now. Nicks has held the reins in a pre-season, fairly or not Voss is forever under suspicion of being ready to drop into Crazy Vossy at the drop of a hat, so, at the moment, Lade is the guy I'd be looking at to "have the club's back".

Because two heads are better than one? I'm more interested in an older assistant coach who has had experience at 2 different clubs in the past 6-7 with one or ideally both having finals experience. This sort of perspective could be invaluable to us given our current coaching panel.

If you look at the AFL experience on our coaching panel, it's pretty damn thin. Hinkley's resume is significantly better and more diverse than any other coach. This kinda should be the case, but you'd still think any good club should have some very solid support in there.

Hinkley - 1 year St Kilda (2001), 6 years Geelong (2004 - 2009), 3 years Gold Coast (2010 - 2012), Port since late 2012; 2 premierships
Bassett - 2 years at Essendon; no finals
Greaves - 2 years at Melbourne; no finals
Hentschel - none
Lade - 7 years at Richmond; 3 finals for no wins
Nicks - none, been at Port since 2011
Surjan - none, been at Port since 2004
Voss - 5 years at Brisbane, Port since late 2014; 2 finals for 1 win in 2009 and rubbish ever since

So remove Hinkley and our entire coaching panel has a combined 1 win in finals outside of Port. That's pretty sad.

There must be something happening as when Thomas sent out his letter to us he mentioned some changes happening and we would know soon.
People are just getting their knickers in a knot because these announcements are being made to fit in with the greater picture of Port's offseason rather than at a time that fits best to satiate us plebs' boredom during the offseason.

"We will invest in the development of our leadership, skills and approach to the game. We welcome Brendon Lade back, and will announce more structural change soon."

From KT's message last week

With the China announcement now out in the open, I would suggest we'll be hearing more soon. I also know someone highly rated did interview at Port, and that is a legit:

Encouraging and do you highly rate the said person? If so good enough for me and agree with some others...relax and let things unfold!
