Assistant Coaches 2017 - Lade returns!

Then just get rid of all the assistants. Really this thinking is so John Cahill circa 1990.

Coaches need assistants and Hinkley worked so well in 2013 with Richardson and 2014 with Walsh. Why wouldn't we want someone like those two to work with Ken in 2017?
I'm not saying that Ken doesn't need assistants and I don't believe others are either. Simply saying that if we need a senior coach masquerading as an assistant to carry Ken then we may as well cut out the middle man and cull Ken now.

We should get an assistant who's skills and experience complement Ken and the other assistants not one that is a defacto head coach while we keep Ken on.

Hard to argue with you in reality.

However, I can't help but think the critics will rightly question the Club's focus if we underperform for a third consecutive year while making a big success of the China strategy.

It's KT's job to get the club to operate at a profit and increased share market and revenue. I think he's been doing a very good given where we were at 5 years ago. We've turned it around in terms of operational performance.

It's KH's job to get the team to perform on the field. If we fail for another year then all fingers should be pointed to Ken and not KT.

In 2004 when we won the premiership in our coaches box we had Mark Williams Dean Baily Phil Walsh and before the finals Alistair Clarkson, that is a pretty strong group of football brains, all went on to coach in their own right and one is arguable the best coach in the AFL now. Which make it difficult for me to understand why some posters believe Ken should be able to run the team on his own or with inexperience assistants. So I for one hope we are getting someone in the ilk of those four and I hope Ken can deliver, in 2017

Ken Hinkley is an excellent man manager, and has some great oratory skills. His ability to simplify aspects of the game plan and communicate that to players is quite good (Whether the plan is actually a good one is another matter completely). This is the exact type of person you want to be your head coach. We need assistants who have really strong tactical skills and knowledge, to produce a game plan that is executable and communicable to players. If Hinkley was a master tactician, we'd still need a communicator. If he was both of those things he'd be one of the greatest coaches of all time.

Perhaps I've lost a bit of faith in Ken to get the job done in his own right, I definitely think he needs high quality support underneath him. But this really goes for all coaches, Alistair Clarkson has always had great assistants underneath him. Unfortunately we lost 2 really good ones in 2014 and have gone backwards ever since.

Sink or swim Kenny some say, can we really afford to go down that path? A 3rd year of failure after investing so heavily on the list and football department in recent years? I want Kenny to prove he is the right man to lead us forward but he can still do that with a quality senior assistant beneath him.

2013 - quality assistant, play finals
2014 - quality assistant, make the prelim
2015 - no quality assistant, finish 9th
2016 - no quality assistant, finish 10th
2017 - quality assistant, make finals, extend Ken's contract?

I wonder if this is what our resident millennial board member is bringing to the table?

It does make it stand out amongst all my other emails.

lol.

"Emoji's. We definitely need more emojis."

inb4 old man on internet explorer 1.0 complains that the clubs emails and facebook posts are unreadable and full of random characters that should be emojis.

I might be old fashioned and a bit simple, but would prefer we get footy right and put the right coaching structure in place before so focussing so heavily on China.

Look after core business.
I think like many businesses you have to work on a number of fronts at any one time. What with a Board, Executive/Management team etc simply allocate/delegate tasks to the appropriate group. Job Done!

I love the romance of it all but the jury is out on Lade for me. Being ex PAFC premiership player I'm willing to give him a decent crack however.

Lade with Tredders on last night's Ch 9 segment. If he can get Lobbe playing like he did in the 2nd half of 2013 and most of 2014 and Ryder back to his 2015 form or better, - then watch out sports fans!!

No. That's exactly what I don't want to hear. Unless Ryder does his knee or something, the only person who should be worried about Matthew Lobbe's performance is Chad Cornes.

Absolute best case scenario for Lobbe is that he gets back to his 2014 form. I don't even think that he's capable of that, but even if we were to assume that he does get back to his 2014 form, his 2014 form is still nowhere near as good as peak Paddy Ryder. And he can't play anywhere other than the ruck, which means that even 2014 form Lobbe would push Ryder into having to play somewhere else where he'll be much less effective.

The club is bigger than the individual. Lobbe has a role to play for our club, and that role is 'back-up ruck if Paddy Ryder is unavailable'. That is it. I don't care if he's getting 100 hitouts a week in the SANFL.

Playing Lobbe (even an in form Lobbe) and Ryder in the same team because Ryder can play a bit up forward would be the Aussie Rules equivalent of replacing your elite goalkeeper with an average goalkeeper because your elite goalkeeper is also a halfway competent left back.
