Now this topic has probably been down to death on other threads but maybe not from this angle.
Rock is the mids coach and Hale forwards coach. The continual long bomb in to the forwardline was again exposed embarrassingly for all to see V Egirls. It was happening all of last year and so far the 6 games this year. Mcgoven had leather poisoning in First Half and Yeo/Barrass in Second Half

Is it a case that our players either getting the wrong instructions from the midfield & forward coaches or getting the correct instructions and not having the skills to execute it?

At our review tomorrow they should show how a side kicks to their forwards' advantage ie to kennedy on a lead. How good did it look when Weller hit Kersten on a lead - ie mark and goal.

Are our mids instructed to lower eyes to look for a leading player in F50? are our Forwards instructed to lead? when leads are covered then kick to hot spot.

We haven't a Power forward we have two key mobile forwards who are far far better suited on the lead. if this is trained on during the week then something definitely goes missing once the white line is crossed.

as an aside - Walters & crozier should watch highlights on see how to crumb goals.

I don't think the problem is the coach but fatigue, after three comeback win .

Fyfe
Neale
Mundy
Sandi
Johnson
Walters
All look a bit off as compare to eagles players who is fresh due to lack of effort vs hawthorn.

Yes because you know exactly what's going on at a training level of the club

I think it's a fair question to ask. Someone is getting this terribly wrong. Either it's the overall game plan (RTB); just get it in their any old how (mids coach - Rock); or the positioning / leading patterns of the forwards (Fwds coach - Hale).

Something / somewhere needs to give. If they're being coached that way - FIND A DIFFERENT FREAKING WAY OF GETTING THE BALL INSIDE 50! This one ain't working and it's driving people to despair!

OR - if it's not at a coaching level, then the players are taking it upon themselves to just bomb it in, which means they are not playing to the plan/system and are ignoring instructions... and need a bloody good arse-kicking to get them to lower their eyes, and try something different. Hit up a target who's on a lead, let them go back and have a shot.

Someone in the chain needs to stop doing what doesn't work, hoping that with some miracle, it suddenly will.

Maybe it's the game plan or Ross not placing enough focus on skills during player development or the incompetence of some line coaches. Or a combination of all of them. To single out two coaches is a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction

If you want youth you have to expect inconsistent games. The first quarter forward half had Logue ,Grey and Balic playing against experienced defenders. They are still learning blocking etc. Made it tough on McCarthy who is also young and inexperienced. You can't blame the forward coach for youngsters inexperience.

To those at the game. To me it didn't look like we held our structures forward of the ball anywhere near what we had done during the Dogs and Melbourne game.

That and we looked flat. So little run from out the backline and through the midfield. Surely the coach tells them to run against a team that sets a very good zone up.

I agree we look flat , if spurr, ibbo and sherriden continue to allow easy goal or turn over ,the mid and forward need to work triple hard to score and win from behind. They are all human.

How about the mids get back to help out or at least pressurise the the entries into WC'S forward line.

They are half done , fyfe one season out of the game , Neale interrupted pre season, mundy ( I don't know maybe niggle) like I said is not that they don't want to but the last three come back take a lot of energy out of them .

spurr ,ibbo and sherriden just enjoy the ride of other effort players effort in the last three win.

I would like to get Darth Vader in to find new ways to motivate them...

Perhaps the thread title should be 'Do Rock and Hale need to be help accountable?" to encourage debate. Minor change but different connotations.

Somehow I don't think they're being instructed to continuously bomb it long.

It's a mixture of inexperience from guys like Weller and Langdon who are often delivering it and a forwardline who've only played 6 proper games together. They get in each others way/cut off space to lead into way too much but that's to be expected. The chemistry isn't really there especially with midfielders rotating through.

Of course not , the more you leak goal the more you want to score to even up thus cause a quick decision of bombing instead lower the eye from the inexperienced group

Of course it's not solely the coaches fault. There isn't a team in the AFL that wouldn't practice 'lowering the eyes'. The reason we sometimes don't see it on match day is the inexperience of some members of the team/the pressure of another experienced AFL outfit coming at you.

You introduce more highly skilled players, dump the unskilled and you persevere. Not much else too it. You guys have to remember we probably have another season or 2 of rebuilding before we can even think of finals.

Long bombs to the forward line are bread and butter kicks, particularly off a center clearance. Of themselves, nothing wrong with doing it.

But we don't have monster sized forwards playing and Kersten at 191cm is barely a "tall" forward in a modern footy sense. The teams that we play will have modern kpd's - defenders were rarely much good against kpf's in the old days of weekly bags by the champion forward, but they are now - and most teams will have someone that can lock down a monster. That means that they have someone in place with better reach/leap than our miniature tall forwards. In essence, we are not structured to make use of a long bomb in our forward line with McCarthy/Kersten only as talls.

It wouldn't have been so bad if we could bring the ball to ground, but being consistently outmarked - OUCH! This is with both teams having moved to our forward line with the ball in flight - and now for the ball to go straight back to defence with few people for pressure and a quick and easy goal.

Because we aren't structured for long bombs, we really need to move the ball via short passes or we will keep risking 7 goal blowouts in a quarter.

Will adding tab in the line up help ?

I suppose it could have been a bit of a thought of a method amongst the inexperienced players because the final two goals we scored against North last week, and the winning goal against Melbourne were all from long kicks to contests inside 50m (albeit a little deeper into the 50m than some of last nights kicks).

Sometimes its from taking too long and letting the opposition defenders get back, and sometimes its from playing on and rushing it in too quick. I think a lot of our players still have to work out how far they can kick and how much ground an opposition player can cover whilst the ball is still in the air.

Trying to do this in a way to satisfy Allikats request.

Do we add a monster sized forward to the line up, because at the moment we are bombing from the midfield to the forward line and get repeatedly outmarked when doing so? Absolutely. Even if whoever that is, can't/doesn't/won't mark they will stand a chance of bringing the ball to ground.

I'd have thought it would have been pretty obvious to the coaches by now, but if you can't raise the bridge, lower the water - without a monster in the forward line, we need to stop bombing the ball there as it is not working with the players we have.
