Assistant Coaches

For Harvey to possibly progress further he needs to leave Collingwood (after 9 seasons). Wherever Noble has been there has been an improvement and on SEN today what pushed him ahead was what the BL's have achieved in the past 2 seasons after being considered a basket case before then. What have the Pies achieved under Harvey. As a line coach - it has been his line that has regularly fallen down. He needs to go to learn new ideas.

I think when you look at our overall system, the defensive assistant coach is always going to get praise for his portfolio, whereas others are unlikely to.
If you have a look at the line coach roles he has had going back to Carlton they improved after he was moved to another role. We were defensively sh*t in 16/17. He was the defensive coach in 16/17 before he was replaced by Longmuir in 2018. He is currently our midfield and Transition coach

Would there be any assistant coaches who have been at a club as long as Harvey without a flag?

Never been one to bag assistants because it's too hard to judge them on the basis that we're not "inside the four walls" but it's obvious the impact coaches like Longmuir had on the boys. You hear the occasional praise for Harvey. But gee you just never hear about Sando. He'd have to be the weaker link.

Of the 60 or more assistant coaches in the league, he regularly gets short-listed for Head coach positions. I really am curious why so many on this board are convinced that he's terrible. It certainly doesn't seem to be his AFL wide reputation.

For mine, if you look at our mid and ball movement Harves is the line coach in that area. Yes I know that is completely face value and simplistic BUT it would totally coincidental if there was no actual fault on his part. Sando the same as he's the forward coach.

IMHO it's a big reason we're failing and other not so superstar lists like y'know the premiers are doing so well.

I just think its too simplistic to just look at lines rather than the whole. Eg the slow and safe from defence we adopted in 2019 and kept for the majority of 2019 makes the defence more effective, but had a negative impact on the other lines. Defnesive/offensive running and positioning of the forwards has a major impact on the defence's effectiveness. Defensive structures in the midfield make the assistant defensive line coach look better but the midfield coach look worse. If we go with a proper wingman rather than having Mayne playing as an extra defender, it'll ..Etc...

I think Longmuir deserved a heap of praise for managing to keep the defence so organised in 2018 despite the raft of injuries and thus changes, but generally I don't understand how people can judge the effectiveness of an assistant coach.

I did mention that it is simplistic to correlate the line coaches with the areas we're failing in. However it is a fair assumption to make those observations because we aren't inside the mc meetings with the panel or in the coaches box on game day.

Your reference to a defensive / offensive running yes has a lot to do with it but again we don't know the 'instructions' and how well the group are in sync with each other / executing it. Either either it's failing.

So again one can only come back around and look at the line coaches (the panel as a whole) and ask the questions.

Alternatively, we can accept that we just don't know and do what has always been done and I think should be done. Point the finger at the head coach and expect him to fix issues. Ultimately, managing the line coaches, evaluating their performance and making cuts if necessary has to be a major part of his job. Like every manager his success depends upon his team of assistants doing their jobs effectively. If they're not and haven't been for the best part of a decade, the head coach is just as responsible for that as the assistant coach.

Spot on SR, we just don't know and we can only speculate but you're right it ultimately falls on the responsibility of the head coach and to Walshy further up the line.

Any head coaches as well ?
Not currently. Of course Mick went longer without one than Bucks.

The point of my Harvey post is that assistants are easier to replace. Nothing against him, just think we need fresh eyes.

Mathew Knights at Geel ?
Barker - Carlton
Blakey - Swans
The response was in answer to a question has any body been assistant at Collingwood for as long as Harvey without a flag.
Blakely had been assistant coach for 4 years when the swans on the GF in 2012.
Knights became an assistant coach at Geelong in 2015.
Barker - yes

Or maybe the reason we wanted Treloar and Phillips gone is that they were significant contributors to our midfield woes.

Collingwood will have a new midfield coach for the first time since 2011 as Robert Harvey rounds out his senior coaching resume with a switch to the backline in 2021.

Harvey missed out on the North Melbourne role last month despite another strong showing and will continue to add layers to his coaching with the backline switch.

Collingwood will have long-time Pies assistant Brenton Sanderson moving from attack to coach a midfield

Harvey will be the defensive coach, Brenton Sanderson will take over the midfield and former Former Essendon assistant Hayden Skipworth will coach the forwards after 12 months as the head of Collingwood’s development academy.

Damien Carroll will replace Skipworth as the academy coach after a decade at Hawthorn as an assistant, VFL coach and head of development and learning.
