Assistant coaches

It would cost too much to lure anyone from interstate, especially if they are only a part-time coach at present, meaning he's got another day job somewhere else which he'd have to give up.

we could always skype......

just on that Laidley as an assistant would be pretty decent. It'd never happen though.

Then offer him a full time job..

I heard on the news the other day he has started a development academy that looks like it's gathering momentum anyhow.

The word was if the big time sponsors jump on board he will be taking it nationally.

But would still love him teaching our boys at some stage - even some specialist coaching a couple of times per year

Number of coaches per club, football and development:

North – 7
Bulldogs - 7
Richmond - 8
Essendon - 8
Melbourne - 8
Geelong – 8
Hawks – 8
Saints – 11
Carlton – 11
Collingwood - 11

Number of football related staff (recruitment - development - medical - coaching) not including property staff etc:

North – 23
Richmond - 24
Essendon - 28
Melbourne – 31
Hawthorn - 33
Collingwood – 35

Other clubs have more specialist roles in both coaching and non-coaching football roles obviously due to FD spend.

Interesting stats B Tron.

Essendon have always spent less than you would expect on their footy department. Their view is that it is to some degree a law of diminishing returns once you get past a certain point.

A club like Collingwood however needs to find something to spend their annual $10M profits so we'll surely see the day soon when each player has their own individual coach, physio and doctor attending to their needs 24/7 and they'll have a full time recruiter at every under 8 game nationally.

Each Collingwood player has his own weights room and an assistant who pumps the weights for him.

On the subject of assistants, I'd be inclined to ask Brad before changing anything.

Some of Scotts former team mates.
I would start courting Simon Black,Nigel lappin and even Graig Mcrea possibly a Shane Obree,
New Blood will inject new ideas and revitilise the playing group as well.

with some of the numbers makes you wonder how clubs survived 20 years ago with only 1 coach?

Im of the opinion you go for the best of all 3 worlds...
recent retired player, tactical and motivational.

the recent player should be able to associate with the players.

The tactical needs to be across all the tech stuff - sports science etc

The motivational is the hard one. Suggest you can set the structures, sports science programs etc etc but to make it all come together whilst instilling fear / pride in the jumper and the desire to run through brick walls is not something they cant teach in uni.

We probably have 2 of the 3, the one missing is probably the motivational...someone like a Malthouse maybe?

It would never happen.....

But we need a L Matthews or M Malthouse.

Thats what the club needs.

Let Scott continue to be the "head coach" and the one who fronts the media for interviews.

But on gameday, we need the words of experience of a Matthews or Malthouse to "steer the ship".

The current coaching team - Crocker, Allison and co. have NFI !

Interesting - thanks for the insight. Where did you learn that?

I suggested Lenny Hayes when he retires in another post but one that popped up out of that thread was Simon Black.......He´s definately retiring come seasons end and would be a huge help to our midfield training.

Levi that policy was established in the days when Peter Jackson was their CEO. He was a bloke I had a lot of time for. Very understated and a straight shooter.

I think his quote used to be "If some clubs had $100 million to spend on their football departments they would spend $100 million" adding that this was not a policy they followed.

The figures supplied by B Tron further confirm the fact.

Black seems to be a quality person. He'd be a fantastic mentor to our young midfielders.

Would love a bloke like Simon black around the club, I know we give him alot of Schtick when we play Brisbane due to the games over the last year but he is truly a class above and someone I'd love to see mentor our kids on and off field

Wonder if we'll ever see the days of the playing coach again?, i'd be all for Scotty Thompson to step up if the club was willing to go down that path.

Why not try for Malthouse?
Unless Carlton falls in a giant heap this year, there isn't a club for Mick to take.
He said on the footy show last year that the game changes so fast these days, that unless he had a new head coach role by the end of 2012, he would never be a senior coach again. More than 12 months out of the game is just too long.
Assistant coaching is maybe his chance to perform a fulfilling coaching role without bearing the entire load 24/7
I'm pretty sure his wife would rather him take over match day and selection duties at North than see him wear the stress of being a senior coach again.
Hird has Thompson. Buckley has Eade.
You can't tell me Scott wouldnt be more effective with Mick as his righthand man in the box.
I know Crocker has done a good job helping Scott for 2 years but I have also seen opposition game breaking mids take us apart unhindered by a tag in many games since Laidley left.
Crock was in the box in everyone of those occasions.
Mick would be better. His primary jobs besides match day tactician would be to develop Scott as a match day tactician and monitor the performance of the other assistants. In other words, make sure the correct coaching dynamic was
in place.
Hey, I can dream
BTW, Blakey(defense) and Nigel Lappin(midfield) would be a good start

I think we have got our assistant coaching wrong.

All the good sides have a relatively inexperienced coach (Pies, Crows, Saints) etc but have an experienced ex coach as assistants or on the coaching team ie Eade, Bailey, Laidley etc.

I think Scott is missing that experience.

think our assistant coaches need to be looked at

my belief is that the reason we are struggeling is our assistant coaches, compared to every other afl club we have no assistant coaches who are not long out of the game, all our assistants have been out of the game for 5 years or more or never played at the highest level, time for some new blood to assist brad who i have faith in, sure crocker won the best assistant coach award in 2010 but seriously the questions have to be asked about our assistants thoughts

Re: think our assistant coaches need to be looked at

i would like to see the following maybe lance whitnall as a fowards coach, paul wheatley as a backline coach, simon black as a midfield coach

As long as he isn't involved in our fitness program.

Lance Witnall 5 years out of the game, will be 6 in 2013.

Paul Wheatley currently 3 years out of the game will be 4 in 2013.

If we are looking for new assistants (IF) I would be targeting players that are playing right now but are/were leaders and have seen success.

Simon Black
Lenny Hayes
Jonathan Brown
Dustin Fletcher
Cam Mooney
Matthew Scarlett
