This is a bewildering selection, dont get me wrong, have no problem getting games into Astbury, but why would you sent a kid averaging 8 possesions a game who trains with the forwards and has struggled to have any real input into any game he has played, to the last line of defence when we have another kid we need to get games into playing so well in that position, worst selection so far this year.

whats the rush, tis an important part of astburys apprenticeship..he'll eventually go forward but he'll learn a heap in the early days playing in defence. Plenty of time for Gourdis, we need to see him play 6 or more games to determine his future at the RFC beyond 2010

Right now the focus is on the next test. Notching 3 in a row and that against a contender. No time to be testing the waters with newbies.;)

Astbury is a newbie and a low contributing one at that, but thats not an issue, we all agree its about developing and confidence and game time at that level, but surely there must be reward for good form when there is an oppitunity.

If bradshaw was playing, Gourdis would make more sense.

I'm not too concerned. Their two key forwards are Playfair and Goodes. Jacko must go to Goodes, regardless of the fact that goodes is playing as a key forward. Playfair shouldnt be too much to handle for Thursfield. That means that Astbury or Moore will probably be on O'Keefe...both are have the athleticism to do so.

At this point, I think that the selectors don't like dropping players, especially youngsters. At the moment, while we're winning, they only changes will be the absoutely necessary ones.

Are you kidding me astbury is gonna be a gun CHB just needs to be given time to develope. Needs to be played at CHB think he could be a really good player for us there. If astbury plays CHB it also frees up mcguane to play third tall and rebound.

I really want to see Gourdis have a bit of a run in the ones and thought he should have come in infront of Moore who is coming off injury and could have had another week just to be cherry ripe.

In regards to Astbury he might not be getting loads of the pill but he is clean, a smart footballer and his kicking is very good. Something we have been crying out for in our big men for years. Looks to have been an inspired pick and deserves his spot so far. Credit to him for overtaking Post and Gourdis in such a short time.

Looking forward to seeing him after another preseason or two. BTW does anybody know how he faired at draft camp/state screening last year. Would be intersted to know just how much pace and agility he has. I was under the impression he was more of an endurance athlete who wanted to play like Nick Riewoldt rather than the quick and agile burst type.

mate, it's about taking a balanced view of what you reasonably expect a rookie tall would be at after 4 or 5 games. ...8 or so possies...going ok..what do you think 15-20, 10 marks , 3 or 4 goals/ per match ...get real

if gourdis is a better player than astbury how come it has taken him 3 season to come close to a game and astbury has done it in his first season. Astbury is a better player and always will be due to his ability to play both ends. Team changes shouldnt be made "just to get games into a particular player" they should be made when obvious ie form, injury. Keeping the team stable will provide better future results than playing every single player on the list

Gourdis can play both ends too. Both will be excellent players in the end, it matters very little who happens to play this week.

Stupid because you don't agree with it! Where do u think asbury should be played??

What's you point btw?
Not an ante Astbury post at all, like him alot and certainly dont want to see him out fo the 22, totally a positional and selection comment if Rance had Goo's form playing deep defence he should have been given the spot, simply finding Astbury (and hes been OK this year) a spot to keep him in the 22 when another players form IN THAT POSITION has been outstanding is bewildering

Not a pro Gourdis post but on that note, a huge worry on our development, it has taken 2 1/2 years for him to get a crack. although prob would have player last year baring injury, and the brilliant upgrading of Polak and Roberts this year which has resulted in a total of 1 three possession game by Roberts

SPOCK do you watch the games we have been playing or just read all this Goo hype and bar up over it? Astbury played back at stages Vs Brisbane infact mostly back IIRC. Week before Vs WCE fair bit down back. Against Saints he was on Rhys Stanley and moved forward for short period unfortunately missed some set shots. He played back against Port in the Wet and did sensationally well.

Bad Call SPOCK unjustified Call uneducated Call bewildering Call be patient with the Goo Call

Seems to me that Astbury is seen as a swingman, even at this early point. I wonder if maybe Post is in the same basket. When Post comes in to the team, we may even see Astbury take a back seat at Coburg for a few weeks.

I wouldn't think Astbury and Goo are a like for like comparison. Seems to me that Goo will be played as what the post topic mentions, a deep back. Not sure exactly where Astbury was named in the team this week, but regardless, doubt very much he will be lining up at FB. How the opposition lines up forward and back is more likely to determine where Astbury will play.

Swans are without White, so they basically have Goodes and Playfair as tall forwards, with maybe a resting ruckman at times. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Astbury push forward often to stretch their backline.

Jacko must go to Goodes, regardless of the fact that goodes is playing as a key forward.
Presti pantsed Goodes last week so I'd suggest Thursty, our best pure spoiler in the Presti mould, should get the job on Goodes. Astbury on Playfair and Moore on O'Keefe. Wouldn't mind seeing Lids play on Goodes though.

I would have preffered to bring in Gourdis instead of Moore.
In light of your irrational love for some of our hacks your hate for Moore no matter how well he plays is bewildering.

On the OP, Astbury has played defence for the past several weeks. Like others, I see a great future for him at CHB. I thought the Goo might have got a run but as Dimma has stated his intention to build a solid back six (as most clubs try to do), it might be a bit unsettling to have two newbies back there. I'd suggest Astbury will get a rest for Goo at some stage, ditto Biggie Griffiths for Post up the other end.

I think a few of you need to read/listen and remember a bit more of what comes out of the club.

When Jack started showing his true wares one of the first things DH said was (paraphrasing a bit here but between ".." is club utterances) "great we can now train up Astbury for a back role as we are not as short on forward power as we thought."

Another thing - "first half of the season is for trying things out, finding players roles, second half to fully settle the team and fully bed down the structures".

About a week ago, "the backline has really come along and we are seeing the fruits of our labour, we just need to keep them settled and really bed in the structures and understanding between the guys down there. The second tier are coming along but need to continue developing the same structures and understanding at the next level."

So that is exactly what is happening - we are keeping things as settled as possible, changes only occuring becasue of injury. The goo is being rewarded for his efforts - he is being shown that he is either one more backline injury or form better than one of the incumbent backline away from a berth by being named as emergency - and who knows maybe one of those injuries might niggle up before the game tomorrow.
