I'm not here to bag him, i honestly don't know if he is any good!!!

Can he fix apart of our forward line ?

I know there's alot of nahas lovers here but i do't think we are going to get much more out of him than we are now.

grifiths looks set to be an awsome player, with him and jack we're starting to look decent, can Astbury fill the other spot ?

Averaging 9 disposals,3 marks and kicked 3 in his first game, he's going alright. Probably wouldn't be rushed into a top side but will be better for the experience.

He's got some great qualities, his marking is solid and he reads the ball well in flight, his most impressive quality is his composure for such an inexperienced kid.

I see him developing nicely over the next few years.

Griffiths has a big body, which means he can get better quicker without having to bulk up (although he will get to around 103-104kgs).

Astbury needs another 5kgs++ if he is to be a solid KPP.

He should have kicked 3 last friday night.

This guy could be a Mark Le Cras or he could be a Chris Pym.

Time will tell - just checked his size - Is he really 195 cm ? wow

Thats the thing about him, he moves like a bloke who's sub 190cm. Once he fills out he'll be a really dangerous player, good on the ground and in traffic, and big enough to take a contested mark and play a key position.

Hardwick singled him out as the one they were happiest to get at the pick they were selected. Has shown glimpses, but I reckon we'll really start to see why next year.

I don't remember reiwoldt doing any more in his first year. He's a very similar player to Jack. Both are 195cm, both smart players, both good on either foot, both good leap and marks. Jack would have been no better playing half a dozen games by midseason as an 18 year old. We'll have 2 Reiwoldts and a Plugger with a couple of dangerous chocolate frogs crumbing for goals :thumbsu:

As with any of our young KPP, Post, Astbury, Griffiths, Gourdis, Westhoff, it will be 2-3 years before we see them physically develop fully let alone reach their playing potential could be from 3-5 years. Remember, before this year Riewoldt was only a prospect, and continued to show more signs each year.

That's all we need from the other guys, as long as they keep improving and showing signs then by about 22-23, and 50 games under their belts we will know who can play and who can't.

Ask this question again in 2012.

After seeing that video i am wondering why we are not kicking the ball to him a bit more. We did a few time last week but he did not kick the goals, but they will come. and yes he will be a good player.

Love it when this spacko theory pops up on bigfooty. Where people can put a player who has been relatively unseen (Griffiths has played about 25 minutes of AFL footy) a mile ahead of a player who has shown more at AFL level.
On the above theory Pat Contin and Dylan Grimes should bypass Lids and Cotchin in no time!

Have a look at his draft footage. While its obviously only TAC footy it will give you a good idea about why we picked him up.

http://www.afl.com.au/video/tabid/76/videoid/50822/david+astbury+highlights/default.aspx

Has great awareness, and decison making, and once his body develops enough for him to play with complete confidence at AFL level he'll be a gun.

Bit of Jimmy Hird about him I reckon.... :thumbsu:

Great video. He has what looks to be a very strong mark and your right a couple more kilos and he will be set. All the skills and awareness is there and with Martin and Foley around his feet times are looking good in the tiger camp of the future. But before we reach that illustrious time we need to make some more hard decisions. Things like cutting out the dead weights, the players who have been at the club for a while and are yet to strike. Now I'm not going to name any of them but it is fairly obvious that are few players that we have recruited who really have no future at our club if we want to make the finals. Lastly i think more time, money and effort needs to be put into our key position players, especially in the ruck and backline. Chris Newman is a great player and he does his job well and with guts but he lacks the support of a big defender who can take on the oppositions key forward allowing him to run up the ground and unload with a big left foot pearler. Also although Angus Graham has improved greatly over the last few weeks he still doesn't have the presence, kick or football intelligence to be a key position ruckman and now that Simmonds has left he doesn't have another support ruckman.

Astbury has been super impressive I thought.

Very very happy with him.

Post is my concern but KPP in there 1st and 2nd year probably shouldn't even be getting a gig.

Have a look at Watts or Jarrod Grant for examples.

Has missed a number of relatively easy shots at goal recently.

Looks likely though. Needs time.

Really like this Kid! Just doesn't look like A 195cm player. As someone else said, he moves like and sub 190cm player.

Given that Jack is a lock as a KPF and Griffiths will likely be the other KPF, I'm starting to think I want him to play as a backman and possible swing him forward on the odd occasion. He obviously needs to fill out, but with the way he reads the play, his composure and good skills he would be a really good CHB. What I'm really hoping for is a Brian Lake type player.

^^^^^^^

Look we know you are a troll masquerading as a richmond fan so please stop it or you will be banned.
wow dude u need to chill out and stop worrying about jumping at someone who is just pointing out the facts. We do have players that need to be dropped and we also have players who need to improve. Its a known fact. If we had an abundance of good players then we wouldn't be so far down the ladder, but we don't have those players and so that is why i am pointing out the need to drop some of our less successful players to make room for the future

:thumbsu:EXACTLY. Heaven help any Richmond payer who shows any sort of ability first-up ... boy do the expectations quickly grow.

Would be interested to revisit any thread soon after Dean Polo's debut v the Bombers in Dreamtime at the G.

Bet there were plenty hailing the next midfield genius.

Fast forward five years, Polo has just laboured to the 50 game mark and is battling for his football survival, having equal the number of off-field discretions than influential games!!

Way too early to tell on Astbury ... just be staisfied he's showing a bit and has time on his side to develop.

making a long term call on a player after 5 or 6 games is nothing more than a pluck from the clacker and for all it';s worth, that's where it should remain
