Damn, Rafa not on until midnight at least. Wanted to watch him and see how he goes.
Yeah rough time. I’ll watch the replay tomorrow.

Fonseca on now, looking good against Sonego. Took the first set, up 4-3 on serve in the second. Anyone’s match.

Just finished watching. The W/UE count ended up being nasty, but I didn’t hate what I saw. He flashed some of the Rafa magic. He just ran out of steam big time, but that’s to be expected and that could and should be improved if he stays fit and builds up match fitness.

ADM was excellent and wore him down. Great defence, great drop shots, good serving. That FH on the full stretch early in the first was unreal. Wonder if theres a video of it. It was incredible.

Out of all the matches I wanted to check out, I made an effort to watch Fonseca. The guy is an excitement machine, I already love watching him play. 17 years of age and improving with every match. The kid has huge groundstrokes, a real touch at the net, and good tennis IQ. Physically needs to get stronger and fitter (at 17 who doesn’t), and his serve could have more weight behind it. But boy, I think this kid is the real deal. He’s so much fun to watch.

Also checked out the highlights of Mensik, great to get a win in a masters. Tough match against Norrie next, but I give him a chance. This kid isn’t as exciting, but he’s just super solid already. I’m confident in saying he’s going to be a mainstay of the top 10.

Disappointing performance by ADM against Nadal.

Watched Fonseca against Norrie. The Brit just too tough. Norrie won the first set 6-1 in 20 minutes as the youngster was so erratic. He really applied himself in the second and fed off the crazy crowd, but you felt like a break was inevitable. It came at 4-4 and then won it on his third MP. Fonseca will learn a lot. He needs to get more consistent, and more patient, although he’s always going to have an attacking mindset. He also needs to get stronger. Both should come.

Meanwhile Mensik beat Dimitrov in a really tight 3 setter. This kid is going to be a gem. He’s got everything. I love his BH, and the way he defends off it is pretty awesome. Handles big moments well, generates good pace off his heavy groundstrokes. He’s having an awesome year.

That was a good week on the Nadal farewell tour.

Looks like he will play Rome next. Then you would think RG for the final time.

Although I can't watch I am checking scores daily. Happy that Rublev has finally found his mojo back after a torrid couple of months with four first round loses. The one which really hurt was MC. Hoping he can go all the way in Madrid.

And Rublev goes all the way in claiming his second Masters title. This will give him a lot of confidence going forward. He might be a bit beat up but he will be ok. Also a good tournament for FAA having a few withdrawals helping his cause.

I know the Canada Masters gets lost in an Olympic year but Popryin beat Korda today to make the final against Rublev. Will be played at 9.30am our time tomorrow (a shame I'm not working from home tomorrow). Gets him at 30 in the live rankings, awesome result, if Alex plays in new York (a big if), we could potentially have 3 seeds going.

Popyrin up 1 set to 0 and now up a break in the 2nd set.

We may have an Aussie Masters winner!

Great job Poppy - a week to remember with that list of top players he beat.

Up to World #23 and looks like we will have 3 seeded men at the US Open (plus another 8 in the main draw).

I'm sure many didn't expect this at the start of the year.

First Aussie Masters title winner in 21 years
Nuts.
His form has been great last few months.
World ranking of 23 is insane.
Did not see that at the middle of 2022. Was struggling for form.

Pretty amazing it's never something Nick did. Good day for Australian tennis.

What a week for Alexei. He's always had game but it's tough for him to put it all together. He's always going to be a bit of a streaky player with the way he plays, this won't necessarily mean success in New York but great to see that talent be used.

An insane achievement I doubt even he saw coming this week.

Respectable title run too, odds underdog in every match.

Biggest Aussie men’s title in 21 years, what a feat.

His serving is fire if he gets it going consistently.
His forehand can be lethal, which he showed v Rublev. Went for a few down the line, inside out across court too
